Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged "decisive actions" against violent terrorist attacks, after the blast at a railway station in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
"The battle to combat violence and terrorism will not allow even a moment of slackness, and decisive actions must be taken to resolutely suppress the terrorists' rampant momentum," Xi said.
Three people were confirmed dead and 79 others were injured, including four seriously injured, in the terrorist attack at a railway station in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang on Wednesday evening.

President Xi Jinping said that long-term stability in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is vital to the whole country's stability and national security.
Xi made the remarks during an inspection tour to Xinjiang which ended on Wednesday.
"The long-term stability of Xinjiang is vital to the whole country's reform, development and stability; to the country's unity, ethnic harmony and national security as well as to the great revival of Chinese nation," Xi said when meeting with local Party and government officials.
Safeguarding the country's unity and fighting separatism are of the upmost importance and in the basic interests of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang, he said.
While fighting terrorism, China will deploy a "strike-first" strategy against terrorists in this region to deter enemies and inspire people, Xi said.
The government will implement appropriate policies to improve ethnic harmony and common prosperity of all ethnic groups, he said.

Chinese environmental experts have hailed the recently revised Environmental Protection Law, which features harsher punishments for polluters.
The Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature, voted last week to adopt the revised law.
Chai Fahe, deputy head of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, said he was "impressed indeed" by the new law.
"With a long-term and legally-binding solution, the revised law has prepared a sound legal basis for the country's pollution prevention and control efforts and will effectively guarantee their implementation," said Chai.
Chai said the new law is expected to advance amendments to other laws, such as the law on air pollution control, which experts believe needs more detailed, specific and practical terms.
Chai praised the new law's clear stipulations on local governments' responsibility to ensure environmental quality and the accountability system for failure to do so. He also noted that such provisions should be enforced with practical policies.
Bie Tao, deputy director of the law and regulation department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, said the revised law has impressed him with its support for research, application of environment-related sciences and technologies, and financial aid to develop the environmental protection industry.
The new law will be a strong measure for dealing with pollution, said Yuan Jie, head of the administrative law office of the Commission for Legislative Affairs of the NPC Standing Committee.
The law says that the country should establish and improve an environment and health monitoring, survey and risk assessment mechanism.
"That would help to curb the pollution at the source," Yuan said.
Hu Jianmin, vice president of state-owned power company China Huaneng Group, said enterprises may "feel the pressure" of harsher punishments under the new law.
"However, companies that are diligently practising pollution control regulations will be least affected," he said.
Hu said the new law will also bring about new opportunities to transform and upgrade enterprises as well as for the development of the clean energy market.
Zhang Guozhi, deputy environmental protection director of Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group, agreed.
"Enterprises that observe environmental regulations are usually investing more, and stiff punishments will trim the unfair advantages of polluters, acting as a protection for quality businesses," Zhang said.
However, the experts stressed that the strict law requires strict enforcement and all of society should be encouraged to combat pollution.

Several surveys indicate that the majority of the Taiwanese people want to stop construction of the island's fourth nuclear power plant.
According to a poll by Common Wealth magazine, 58.7 percent of the respondents support the decision to halt the plant, but when asked about the possible electricity price rises if nuclear power was abolished, only 46.2 of those favoring suspension say they will accept such a situation, measured against 50.3 percent who say no.
The Taiwan authority has agreed to halt construction of the plant and hold a referendum to decide its fate with warnings of a 40-percent rise in electricity prices.
Another poll by multimedia group Want Want China Times shows over half of the surveyed residents agree that Taiwan should do away with nuclear power, while 29.6 percent supports its use.
Another survey by Taiwan Thinktank shows 63.3 percent of those polled say Taiwan should abandon the fourth plant as its safety can not be guaranteed. Meanwhile, 65.6 percent say they will vote for scrapping the project in a vote.
Antinuclear protests continued on Monday as some activists blocked the exit of the legislative building in Taipei to prevent the lawmakers from leaving.

A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday called on people from both sides of the Taiwan Straits to guard against attempts to disrupt cross-Straits negotiations and the peaceful development of ties.
Compatriots from both sides should be "on high alert against any 'Taiwan independence' advocacy, including the 'special state-to-state' and 'one country on each side' theories, under the pretext of supervision," said Fan Liqing of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office at a press conference.
Fan made the remarks when asked to comment on different draft versions of supervision rules for the signing of cross-Straits agreements being deliberated by Taiwan's legislative body.
The mainland has noticed that some versions described the nature of the cross-Straits relationship as a "state-to-state" one or "one country on each side," she said.
"The mainland and Taiwan belong to one China and the cross-Straits relationship is not a state-to-state relationship," Fan said.
The mainland firmly opposes "Taiwan independence" and the "special state-to-state" theory in any form, Fan said.
She called on compatriots from both sides to cherish the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and not to let "Taiwan independence" forces disturb or destroy it.

Chinese UN envoy urges political solution to Ukraine crisis

China urges all parties to effectively implement the Geneva agreement and continue to push for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis, the Chinese envoy to the United Nations said Tuesday.
"Regrettably, tension in eastern and southeastern Ukraine has worsened, with both sides more vehemently accusing each other. Threats and sanctions have again replaced dialogue and negotiations," Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The United States, Russia, Ukraine and the European Unionconcluded Geneva talks on Ukraine after reaching an agreement on April 17, calling for an immediate halt of violence in the Eastern European country and practical steps to de-escalate the tension there.
China hopes all parties concerned would keep in mind the large picture of regional peace and stability, Liu said, adding that the parties should maintain restraint, persevere in dialogue and consultations, effectively implement the agreement already reached and continue to push for a political solution to the crisis "so as to achieve stability and development in Ukraine as soon as possible."
At the meeting, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman briefed the Security Council on the recent developments in Ukraine, noting that situation in parts of eastern and southern Ukraine continues to deteriorate.
A group of military monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and their Ukrainian staff were captured and detained in eastern Ukrainian town of Slovyansk last week, while the mayor of Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv Gennady Kernes was shot in the back on Sunday by unknown assailants, Feltman noted.
The Ukraine crisis is a result of a complex intertwinement of historical and contemporary factors, said Liu, stressing that "a political solution is the only way out of the Ukraine crisis."
To tackle the crisis at its roots, it is necessary to consider both the current situation and historical facts, the legitimate rights, interests and demands of the various regions and ethnic communities in Ukraine, as well as the legitimate concerns of all parties so as to reach a balance in the interests of all parties, said Liu.
China's position on the question of Ukraine remains objective, impartial and responsible, said he, noting that "from the very beginning, China has called on all parties to seek a political solution through dialogue rather than confrontation and we support international mediation efforts conducive to de-escalating the situation and seeking a political solution."
"China will continue to play a constructive role in making mediation efforts and pushing for talks," he added.

The revised Trademark Law, due to take effect on May 1, will streamline trademark registration procedures and improve trademark protection, a senior Chinese official has said.
The new law will bring about significant changes to the current trademark management system, Zhang Mao, director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, told Xinhua in an interview ahead of the trademark reform.
The examination period of trademark application will be shortened to 9 months, he said. This period was once as long as 30 months and was shortened to about 10 months last year.
Sounds can be registered and protected as trademarks in the new law, said Zhang. The sounds should be easily distinguished and recognizable. [The law expands the list of activities that constitute trademark infringement and increases punishments.
China's top legislature adopted an amendment to the Trademark Law last August. The amendment strengthens intellectual property protection and ensures a fair market for trademark holders.

Gold futures on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange dropped on Tuesday for a second session in a row, mostly pressured by a rise in U.S. equities.
The most active gold contract for June delivery fell 2.7 U.S. dollars, or 0.21 percent, to settle at 1,296.3 dollars per ounce. Some analysts say, investors opted for the much riskier equity assets after some soft, below expectation consumer confidence data from the United States weighed on the gold trading on the day.
The U.S. consumer confidence index fell to 82.3 in April from a revised 83.9 in March, reflecting a less favorable assessment of current business and labor market conditions, showed data released by the Conference Board on Tuesday.
The upward revision in March put the index in that month at the highest level since January 2008. But the April reading still fell short of Wall Street forecasts. In addition, traders say, investors also await the outcome of the two-day U.S. Federal Open Market Committee meeting beginning Tuesday.
The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against its six major rival currencies, traded at 79.80 on Tuesday, up from its previous close of 79.70 late Monday in North American trade. Silver for July delivery fell 8.1 cents, or 0.41 percent, to close at 19.538 dollars per ounce.

China's WH Group, the world's biggest pork company, pwostponed its planned Hong Kong IPO, underscoring weak demand for the deal even after the company slashed the offer's size and reduced the valuation, people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.
WH Group postponed the deal without setting a new timetable, effectively pulling the deal in its current shape, added the people who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Company officials were not immediately available for comment.
WH Group, whose products include Smithfield ham and Farmland bacon in the US, offered 1.3 billion new shares in a revised deal valued at up to HK$14.61 billion ($1.9 billion).
It had marketed the IPO in an indicative range of HK$8.00 to HK$11.25 per share.

A police officer squared off with a drunk man who claimed he was a mythical character on a quest to find his brother "The Monkey King" while stumbling through the streets of Yangzhou, Jiangsu province on Friday night.
The man, soaked from rain, was heard mumbling about the character from the Chinese literary classic Journey To The West before he slumped at the gate of a local police station.
When an officer tried to get him inside, the man jumped into a tai chi stance and yelled "I'm the Jiangxi White Dragon Horse!"
The officer, familiar with the story, played along and told him they must find his "master and two brothers."
The inebriated man eventually let down his guard, but not before screaming, "You stay away from me monster!"
The officer persuaded the man that he was actually helping him fight monsters and got him indoors.
The man was later picked up by a co-worker, who he left happily with while repeating, "You're finally here, bro."

South Beauty sells majority stake to private equity firm

High-end restaurant chain operator South Beauty Investment Co has sold its majority stake to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, a source from the company's public relations department confirmed with the Global Times Tuesday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But in October 2013, media reported that CVC was planning to acquire 69 percent of South Beauty for $300 million.
The company will tap the market in second- and third-tier cities in future, as its presence is mainly in first-tier cities, a staff member from the PR department surnamed Wu told the Global Times.
South Beauty founder Zhang Lan will remain the company's chairwoman and is still one of the company's shareholders.
Investment firm CDH Investments bought a 10.5 percent stake in the restaurant chain for 200 million yuan ($31.96 million) in 2008, and the investment only stands on condition that South Beauty could get listed by the end of 2012, media said.
In March 2011, the company filed an IPO application with the China Securities Regulatory Commission, but the commission ended its review process of the company's IPO in January 2012.
Media reports also said that the company tried to get listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, but failed.
The central government's anti-extravagance campaign has had an adverse impact on high-end restaurants such as South Beauty which otherwise could have gotten a higher valuation in the deal, experts noted.
South Beauty is valued at 2.7 billion yuan based on the reported purchasing price.

Thorough planning aids firms' success abroad

Successful Chinese companies usually have a thorough plan based on the realities of their own business and their industry before expanding internationally, said Eugene Qian, head of China global banking of Citibank (China) Co Ltd.
Although many Chinese business are venturing abroad, only a few are truly successful.
Those who succeed are companies with a clear vision of their medium- and long-term development strategy. They know what they really want from overseas investment.
"Company executives should ask themselves before making an overseas acquisition, 'Do we want the international market, the strategic presence at home and abroad during the process of globalization of our industries, or diversification of our investments to reduce the risk?'" he said.
He suggested that corporate leaders must analyze carefully whether a proposed investment is in line with the company's development strategy and whether they can bear the risks involved when they are looking for a target country, industry or company.
"You have to count your ammunition before developing a business overseas, "Qian said. "It needs to be clear that you will receive support from the government, trade associations or your banking partners."
Even if a company has enough capital for an acquisition, it needs to remain flexible and be prepared to increase the price if other buyers emerge.
Senior executives also have to think about how much more they'll have to spend following an overseas acquisition, many of which require ongoing funding.
"A good banking institution is a trusted adviser of its clients. The bank will think ahead and forecast clients' demand with a thorough understanding of their development strategies," he said.
"It knows whether clients should expand their business segments and geographic reach, where they should go based on country risk assessments, where their major global competitors are and in which areas they will have major capital expenditures in the next few years," Qian said.
Citibank China has found it useful to share the experience of other multinational enterprises going global with its Chinese clients to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses and determine the direction of their next steps.
After more than 10 years of overseas expansion by large State-owned enterprises, especially those specializing in natural resources and advanced manufacturing, leading private companies such as Dalian Wanda Group Corp Ltd and Shanghai-based Fosun International Ltd are also moving to expand their geographic reach.
In East China, even some lesser-known, medium-sized private companies have established branches in overseas markets where they've been doing business. Some companies are using Singapore or Hong Kong as their overseas treasury and export centers.
After serving leading Chinese companies for nearly 20 years in their overseas investment and expansions, Citibank China started seeking out and fostering more promising private enterprises several years ago.
The bank has set up China Desks in Hong Kong, Singapore, London, New York, Dubai and other cities to provide on-the-ground financial support to the overseas operations of Chinese companies.
Apart from giving companies suggestions on investment projects and strategy, the bank also helps them implement ideas, raise capital, integrate with target companies and manage financial risks after acquisitions.
"More Chinese companies will venture overseas," said Qian. "We will keep cultivating high-growth emerging market champions mainly in fields such as industrial manufacturing, natural resources and consumer products."

Three ballet productions have been staged at Beijing's Tianqiao Theater this week, with the spotlight on the younger generation of dancers and choreographers. The three pieces are the result of the Ballet Workshop launched by the National Ballet of China back in 2010.
"Yanshi," a ballet production by Wang Sizheng, is inspired by a fantasy story from the Western Zhou Dynasty centuries ago. Dancers don silky white costumes that take the packed house back to ancient China.
The second piece, entitled "Three Inch Golden Lotus" is adapted from contemporary Chinese writer Feng Jicai's eponymous novel. The ballet is choreographed by Zhang Zhenxin, which centers around the foot binding custom popular among Chinese women in the past. It was once believed that foot binding was a symbol of beauty for women. The smaller one's feet were, the more likely they were to marry into a wealthy family.
Choreographer Fei Bo's piece is based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," saluting the all time classic.
The Ballet Workshop provides abundant opportunities for young talents to exchange ideas and improve their dancing techniques.
"The Ballet Workshop helps to not only cultivate young talent, but also to promote ballet among a wider audience," said the director of National Ballet of China Feng Ying.
Participating dancers say that everyone has benefited from the project, in which they inspire and learn from each other, and are able to put their work to the test.

Weichai sees its link with Ferrari as a winner

2014-04-29 16:05 China Daily
The 2014 Formula 1 season continued recently with the latest Chinese Grand Prix from Shanghai, with hundreds of millions watching worldwide.
But what was noteworthy about this year's Chinese Grand Prix was not just the continued dominance of British driver Lewis Hamilton and his new Mercedes team and teammate Nico Rosberg; it was also the presence of a Chinese corporate brand, Shandong province's Weichai Power Co Ltd, seen proudly sponsoring the Ferrari Formula 1 team car.
Weichai, one of China's largest automobile and equipment manufacturers, is the first Chinese company to sponsor the Ferrari team, easily the most recognizable, exciting and flamboyant of the Formula 1 brands.
As a result of this deal Weichai's new logo will now be present on Ferrari's Formula 1 team cars and on the drivers' uniforms from now on.
Not that Weichai's brand building initiative represents the very first such maneuver by a Chinese company. Aigo Digital Technology Co Ltd, one of China's leading digital technology brands, signed a long-term sponsorship deal with McLaren ahead of the 2007 season and Lenovo Group Ltd, easily China's largest personal computer producer, also sponsors McLaren, having switched from a previous sponsorship agreement with Williams.
But Weichai's association with Ferrari marks a tremendous step forward for the emergence of not just Chinese companies internationally but for Chinese brands and their understanding of brand-building principles and processes.
This is because Ferrari is so much more than a Formula 1 team brand and even far more than a luxury automotive brand. Easily one of the most Italian of Italy's world-famous brands, Ferrari epitomizes the ultimate in elegance, panache and prestige.
Unlike all other current Formula 1 brands, Ferrari possesses a brand heritage rich in styled speed and wealth. Perhaps Mercedes is the only other team that can lay claim to any close rivalry.
Both brands were founded in the early 1900s and have achieved considerable success ever since but with quite different brand-building strategies.
Mercedes most definitely possesses an enviable brand image but, unlike the Ferrari brand, this is not an image associated with a unique combination of sophistication, passion and excitement. Far less emotional, the Mercedes brand has formed an association with a more rational set of values such as reliability and durability.
As a result, Weichai's brand association with Ferrari should contribute to a more emotional corporate brand.
Originating from east China's Shandong province and the city of Weifang, an area rich in historical significance, Weichai has already built an enviable reputation domestically for high-quality, high-tech production engineering.
Despite offering an increasingly diverse product portfolio, Weichai is best known for its expertise in the research, development and manufacture of diesel engines, used mainly to equip automobiles, maritime vessels and power generators. Weichai is an ingredient brand, which makes the Ferrari foray all the more audacious and pioneering.
For far too long, high-tech and engineering brands, and for that matter business-to-business brands generally, have overlooked and underestimated the importance of emotional attachment in the development of their brands.
Intel remain a remarkable, but almost solitary, example of the power of effective rational and emotional brand values from which even ingredient brands can form a significant sustainable competitive advantage.
Weichai's incisive, inspired initiative should, therefore, serve as both an example to China's army of high-tech engineering companies and as a warning to overseas competitors. Weichai's Ferrari bond also appears to be part of an extremely ambitious international growth strategy.
The Chinese Grand Prix may have gone for another year but with a long-term Ferrari sponsorship deal, just watch Weichai go global over the coming years.
Way to go, Weichai !

Online sales lead retail sector: Ministry

New data show that online retail is now a driving force of consumption, which is considered a major contributor to China's economic growth.
According to figures released on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics, online consumption totaled 81.5 billion yuan ($13 billion) in the period from January to March, which was up 51.7 percent from the same quarter in 2013.
The rate outpaced that of the total retail sales of consumer goods, which amounted to 6.2 trillion yuan and recorded a moderate 12 percent year-on-year growth.
The 5,000 key retailers examined by the Ministry of Commerce reported online sales surged 35.2 percent in March, up 15.2 percentage points from the previous two months.
Information and technology-backed consumption has enjoyed rapid growth thanks to the proliferation of smart devices and information technology infrastructure. For instance, sales of 3G and 4G mobile phones rose 27 percent in the first quarter from a year ago.
In the first five months of 2013, fixed asset investment in IT amounted to 82.7 billion yuan, with input from the Internet and telecom companies rising by 63.5 percent, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The ministry has identified household broadband access, online shopping, mobile payments and the micro media as major areas of growth in information consumption.
China overtook the United States to become the world's largest e-commerce market in 2013, according to estimates from China E-commerce Research Center.
Transaction volume via online platforms hit 1.88 trillion yuan last year, up 42.8 percent from the year before.

A 25-year-old dilapidated apartment building that housed 30 families was demolished by local authorities in Changshu, east China's Jiangsu province, on Monday, the Yangtse Evening Post reports.
The building reportedly had visible cracks in the walls, a sinking ground and pieces of the building were crumbling within the past 20 days.
The five-story building received a "D" ranking in "health condition," which classified the structure as being more hazardous than the building that collapsed in Fenghua at the beginning of April that killed one and injured six.
Local authorities are reportedly giving every resident evicted from the building 100 yuan (about $16 US) for every day they have spent without a home, with an additional 2000 yuan (about $320 US) being given to each family.
The city government said resettlement measures will be implemented after an investigation.
The building collapses in Fenghua and Changshu mark the beginning of a wave of such disasters, as the "fast food" buildings erected in China's coastal cities throughout the 1980s and 1990s enter 20s and 30s.

(ECNS) The Beijing Auto Show isn't just about cars. Some people are stealing diesel and reselling it for a profit.
Unlike other venues, E5 gets power from 21 diesel generators. Exhibitors have to pay Sinopec (state-owned oil giant) in advance for the diesel at a rate of 8,680 yuan ($1,400) per ton.
E5 hosts several brands under Volkswagen, including Volkswagen China, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Audi and Skoda.
The first 20 tons of diesel were transported to the venue in early April, during the exhibit's construction. By April 17, oil tanks had drawn over 100 tons of diesel from Sinopec.
Some oil tanks were found to be uploading diesel at Sinopec's oil stations and downloading directly at other oil stations, with only part of the oil being transported to the exhibit.
On April 18, exhibitors purchased another 150 tons, of which 40 tons were supposedly sent to E5 the same day. However, half of that was pulled to a private gas station in Baiziwan in Beijing's Chaoyang District. In the following days, huge amounts of diesel were resold.
Volkswagen China made the biggest prepayment of over 3.11 million yuan (about $500,000) for the diesel. Lamborghini paid the least, about 400,000 yuan ($64,000).
An insider said usually auto makers make estimates on how much diesel is needed. The way they calculate the amount relies on power usage figures from the previous show, which isn't necessarily a good reference, as it was longer than this year's.
Moreover, no exhibitors or power suppliers overlook the pickup and transmission of the diesel. Trucks work only at night and are extremely cautious about being followed.
It's unknown yet who's behind the scheme and how much money is involved. Jinghua Times will be following the story to get updates.

Why all babies love peekaboo
Peekaboo is a game played over the world, crossing language and cultural barriers. Why is it so universal? Perhaps because it's such a powerful learning tool.
One of us hides our eyes and then slowly reveals them. This causes peals of laughter from a baby, which causes us to laugh in turn. Then we do it again. And again.
Peekaboo never gets old. Not only does my own infant daughter seem happy to do it for hours, but when I was young I played it with my mum ("you chuckled a lot!" she confirms by text message) and so on back through the generations. We are all born with unique personalities, in unique situations and with unique genes. So why is it that babies across the world are constantly rediscovering peekaboo for themselves?
Babies don't read books, and they don't know that many people, so thesurprising durability and cultural universality of peekaboo is perhaps a clue that it taps into something fundamental in their minds. No mere habit or fashion, the game can help show us the foundations on which adult human thought is built.
An early theory of why babies enjoy peekaboo is that they are surprised when things come back after being out of sight. This may not sound like a good basis for laughs to you or I, with our adult brains, but to appreciate the joke you have to realise that for a baby, nothing is given. They are born into a buzzing confusion, and gradually have to learn to make sense of what is happening around them. You know that when you hear my voice, I'm usually not far behind, or that when a ball rolls behind a sofa it still exists, but think for a moment how you came by this certainty.
The Swiss developmental psychologist Jean Piaget called this principle'object permanence' and suggested that babies spent the first two years of their lives working it out. And of course those two years are prime peekaboo time. Looked at this way, the game isn't just a joke, but helps babies test and re-test a fundamental principle of existence: that things stick around even when you can't see them.
Maybe evolution fixed it so that babies enjoy peekaboo for its own sake, since it proved useful in cognitive development, but I doubt it. Something deeper than mere education is going on.
Surprise element
Peekaboo uses the fundamental structure of all good jokes - surprise, balanced with expectation. Researchers Gerrod Parrott and Henry Gleitman showed this in tests involving a group of six-, seven- and eight-month-olds which sound like more fun than a psychology experiment should be. Most of the time the peekaboo game proceeded normally, however on occasion the adult hid and reappeared as a different adult, or hid and reappeared in a different location. Videos of the infants were rated by independent observers for how much the babies smiled and laughed.
On these "trick trials" the babies smiled and laughed less, even though the outcome was more surprising. What's more, the difference between their enjoyment of normal peekaboo and trick-peekaboo increased with age (with the eight-month-olds enjoying the trick trials least). The researchers' interpretation for this is that the game relies on being able to predict the outcome. As the babies get older their prediction gets stronger, so the discrepancy with what actually happens gets larger - they find it less and less funny.
The final secret to the enduring popularity of peekaboo is that it isn't actually a single game. As the baby gets older their carer lets the game adapt to the babies' new abilities, allowing both adult and infant to enjoy a similar game but done in different ways. The earliest version of peekaboo is simple looming, where the carer announces they are coming with their voice before bringing their face into close focus for the baby. As the baby gets older they can enjoy the adult hiding and reappearing, but after a year or so they can graduate to take control by hiding and reappearing themselves.
In this way peekaboo can keep giving, allowing a perfect balance of what a developing baby knows about the world, what they are able to control and what they are still surprised by. Thankfully we adults enjoy their laughter so much that the repetition does nothing to stop us enjoying endless rounds of the game ourselves.

The families of 35 victims in two recent fatal mine accidents in southwest China's Yunnan province will be compensated nearly 1 million yuan each, local authorities said Monday.
The mine owners have reached agreements with the victims' families to pay 960,000 yuan ($153,600) to each family, according to the information office with the Qujing municipal government.
The accidents both happened in the city of Qujing. A flood has claimed 21 lives so far since April 7. Rescuers are searching for the last miner missing in the flood.
Another blast killed 14 miners on April 21.
Qujing is a major coal production base in Yunnan's eastern part. Altogether 16 mine managing staff involved in the two accidents have been detained by police.
Another 11 local officials in charge of work safety have been removed or suspended from their posts pending further investigation, according to the office.

Top tips to help choose your right partner
Know yourself
This step is very important if you really want to choose the right partner. You have to know yourself. Some people are searching in all corners of the earth for their soulmate but come back in vain. One of the reasons of that failure is that the bachelor did not ask himself. So the, before loving someone, before making your choice on the right guy or girl to marry, start by asking yourself the real questions: who are you? What do you want? What are you expecting from your partner? What do you like most? All these little questions may seem tiny but are very important. It is after answering these questions to yourself that you can start defining who you are and what you really want.
Be positive and keep smiling
After knowing yourself, you can now begin to change your mind. The next key for alluring your future wife or husband is being positive. By being positive, people will automatically call on you, run to you and would like to by your side because of the energy you are spreading all around you. Don't worry, it's metaphysical. Keep smiling, not in blissful ignorance but the acceptation of the reality: that you are what you are, good-looking and valuable. These two steps are more than essential. It is all in the attitude.
What do you want?
There is no formula in love. You may already know the type of guy/girl you would like to date and that is correct. You find your love and that is all. If you have not yet defined clearly what kind of person you want to be your husband or wife, do not worry. These are things that have to be discovered solely and patiently. The person may not be what you have been expecting, but if there is love, communication can begin.
Common interest
The proverb says that birds of the feather lock together. This may be true in some cases but generally speaking, the two individuals need a common interest. It may be playing video games or horse riding. It doesn't matter; you just have to be sure that there is, at least, two things that you like to do with the other person. This will play a big role in the couple's future life together.
Can you communicate to each other?
This is another key point. Two persons who cannot talk to each other just cannot live together. For a period of time, it can be possible but for a long-term relationship, it does not work. The two peoples have to share their feelings (happiness, likes and dislikes, anger, etc.) to each one other. And once again, we repeat it: communication is the basis of a long-term and happy marriage.
These are just few tips but the decision is yours. Be who you are, be positive, define what you want and what you do not want and finally choose someone that you can talk with and who has a common interest with you.

The three-day May Day holiday is set to have a sunny start, though cloud is forecast for the remaining two days of the spring break.
Temperatures will be decidedly spring-like, with the mercury above 25 degrees Celsius on the first two days.
The sun is set to shine on Thursday — the first day of the holiday — under the influence of high pressure, and temperatures will reach 26 degrees Celsius, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Friday is set to be overcast, though with temperatures reaching 27 degrees.
Cloud is predicted for the final day of the holiday too, with temperatures edging down to 24 degrees.
Good weather is also expected on the three working days this week following a wet weekend, as the trough of low pressure causing that has moved east and temperatures are rising day by day, meteorologists said.
Today should be overcast, with the temperature ranging between 15 and 20 degrees.
Tomorrow and Wednesday will be sunny to cloudy, with highs of up to 24 degrees.
The low is set to be around 13 degrees for both days.

A small family restaurant serving authentic Shanghai dishes is set to expand after an appearance on a hit TV show saw it inundated with customers.
The Sanlin Benbang Dish Restaurant appeared on Friday's episode of "A Bite of China II," about the country's food culture.
In 2012, "A Bite of China" was a massive hit and the second series of the China Central Television production is also proving hugely popular.
Viewers saw family patriarch Li Borong, who is in his 80s, play the pipa — a four-stringed Chinese instrument — while his twin grandsons, Li Wei and Li Yue, demonstrated their cooking skills.
Despite being off the beaten track, foodies have rushed to Sanlin Town in the Pudong New Area for a taste of benbang — which means native and original.
But this new-found fame has brought its headaches for the family too.
Although praising delicious dishes, some diners have complained of cramped space and poor service at Sanlin Benbang Dish Restaurant.
Li Mingfu, Li Borong's son, who founded the business in 2011, admitted that the restaurant, which covers just 140 square meters and has only 12 tables, can't cope with the influx of benbang fans.
"Our restaurant is small. We have only four chefs during the day, with one more in the evenings, and just four waiting staff," he said.
The eatery will now only accept reservations, in order to ensure the quality of meals, Wenhui Daily reported.
However, Li Mingfu admitted to breaking this rule sometimes, rather than disappoint customers who have traveled some distance.
But in the longer term, he plans to expand the restaurant.
"There's an abandoned warehouse behind the restaurant which is about 100 square meters. I will talk to the township officials to see whether I can rent it," he said.
He is also considering opening a branch in downtown, the paper reported.
'Shovel gangs'
Around 100 years ago, traveling cooks called "shovel gangs" went from village to village in downtown Shanghai cooking hearty, flavorful fare with plenty of fat, sugar and soy sauce.
They got their name from using flat shovels to move pans around on the coals.
The first shovel gang cooks came from Sanlin Town and in 2008, Sanlin benbang cuisine was listed as an intangible cultural heritage by the Pudong New Area District government.
Benbang culinary skills are deep-rooted in the Li family, the Oriental Morning Post reported.
In the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the father of Li Borong, Li Lin'gen, was a pioneer of benbang cuisine downtown, opening a famous restaurant called Dexingguan.
Li Borong himself is a state-level cooking master, and now the family tradition has passed to Li Wei and Li Yue.
Li Minghfu said he won't pressurize his grandchildren into continuing the tradition, but would be delighted if they did, the paper reported.
The eight episodes of "A Bite of China II" cover the stories of more than 150 people and some 300 types of food.
Although only two episodes have been shown, it has already created an online frenzy, and not only at restaurants.
After the first episode was aired, Tmall, the business to consumer unit under China's largest e-commerce company Alibaba Group, stocked 100 foods and ingredients featured.
By April 21, Tmall stores had sold 10,000 orders of cured meats from southwest China's Sichuan Province and 3,400 bottles of honey from Tibet.

Economic growth in Asia is projected to remain steady at 5.4 percent in 2014 and 5.5 percent in 2015, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report published on Monday.
External demand is set to pick up alongside the recovery in advanced economies, and domestic demand should remain solid across most of the region, said the IMF's Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and Pacific.
The report - Sustaining the Momentum: Vigilance and Reforms - said that the region has strengthened its resilience to global risks and will continue as a source of global economic dynamism.
Provided it stays the course on reforms, Asia is well positioned to meet the challenges ahead and to secure the region's position as the global growth leader, the report said.
Despite the growth momentum, the IMF report also warned that Asia will face higher interest rates and potential bouts of capital flow and asset price volatility with the expected upcoming tightening of global liquidity and Asian economies' external risks of a sudden tightening of global financial conditions.

Clock ticking for Australia on a 'truly great' China FTA
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2014/04-28/111457.shtml

2014-04-28 13:05 Web Editor: qindexing
It has been two weeks since Australian Prime Tony Abbott returned from an economically historic turn around the Asian neighborhood, deftly securing trade pacts with South Korea and Japan. Yet a free trade agreement (FTA) with China, representing an opportunity several orders of magnitude greater than both deals combined, remains - after nine fruitless years - unfulfilled.
But a resolution, according to China's Foreign Ministry, is firmly in Abbott's grasp.
Trade specialists here have been counting the days since China, on the 16th of this month, called on Australia to act fast to facilitate inbound investment for Chinese businesses enthused by the obvious synchronicity between the two major economic partners.
The gravity of Chinese trade to Australia has been apparent throughout the Australian economy for more than a decade - a fact to which the Australian prime minister and long-term rival of former mandarin speaking Australian leader Kevin Rudd - would be keenly attuned.
To soften the blow of any expectations of a free-trade trifecta, Abbott called his meetings with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang as one of deepening friendship - rather than merely cutting a trade deal.
These blurred lines of intent may go down easily enough domestically, where nine years of delay have generated an exhausted ambivalence toward free-trade progress, but certainly not in China where cooperation and long-term collaboration prove the value of partnership.
So China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying's terse description of Australia's opaque investment terms at a daily press briefing indicates more than just a bipartisan agreement to "speed things up."
"We expect Australia to create a fairer environment and more convenience for Chinese business investment and operation."
Hua said unequivocally that China-Australia collaboration in trade and investment has to be mutually beneficial.
"We welcome more Australian businesses' investment in China," Hua said, giving the initiative with Mr Abbott to deal with the well-known structural obstacles concerning foreign investment.
Regulatory filters on either side are variously lost in translation, however the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) in Australia now requires in-house stamped approval for investments of any amount from any state-owned enterprises (SOEs) clearly targeted at China's economic frontline.
The move not only provides an additional level of bureaucracy for China's largest investors in Australia, but also empowers a mercantile approach from the Treasurer's office which is more or less beholden to an electorate's mood.
Chinese negotiators have sought both clarification and a higher threshold, seeking exemption for investments under 1 billion Australian dollars.
For his part, Abbott said in Shanghai he recognized the commercial intent of China's SOEs indicating a willingness to grant China the same access to Australia under a free trade agreement as other trading partners.
This would guarantee FIRB scrutinization for deals exceeding the 1 billion mark rather than 248 million as it stands. The hurdle though, is in Mr Abbott's own backyard.
The influential Greens party, whose leader Christine Milne has repeatedly stated absolute opposition to any changes which would allow foreign government subsidiaries to invest up to 15 million dollars in Australian agriculture, without first going through FIRB is one such example.
"If a foreign government is buying into Australia, then that needs to be assessed in every instance, to see if it's in the national interest."
For their part, Australian investors agonize over access to key industries, especially those dominated by SOEs.
The breadth of China's economic importance to Australia stretches well beyond the historic trade surplus.
Almost 30 percent of Australian exports end up in China, a larger share than the next three most important trading nations ( Japan, South Korea and the U.S.) combined. In 2012, Australia exported 78.7 billion Australian dollars worth of goods to China and imported 46.3 billion dollars. China accounts for over 21 percent of total two-way trade for Australia.
These are the figures that need to stay foremost in the minds of negotiators as they move forward.
Abbott has simplified the drawn-out negotiations, as he does with his most perplexing issues, with a sporting metaphor.
He said, "It's a bit like being in the middle of a World Cup grand final those are the stakes we're playing for. We've scored two goals, but it will only be a draw if we don't score the third goal."
Abbott is right and now is the time to score the third goal. An FTA between Australia and China will be "a truly great" agreement between two ideally suited economies.
"What we need now is leadership and the desire to work harmoniously for the betterment of both people," as David Thomas, a Australian trade specialist, said.

Shanghai police have this year caught 106 suspects who jammed cellphone signals to send spam messages from illegal mobile stations, officers said yesterday.
A total of 75 stations were confiscated, they added.
Police, working with Shanghai Mobile, have developed new technology to detect signals from illegal stations, they said.
This will cover the whole city soon.
Five suspects held near the Shanghai New International Expo Center in March had bought equipment on Taobao for 20,000 yuan (US$3,198) and sent junk messages to passers-by.
They opened a company offering to send text messages for 10,000 yuan a day for clients, added officers.
While there are no specific laws against sending spam messages in China, the duo were guilty of disrupting public services as their jamming activities denied signals to mobile phone users, said police.
An illegal mobile station includes devices like a laptop and a special battery hooked up in a car with antennae.
They can be bought easily from online shopping platforms.
Mobile stations produce signals stronger than those provided by telecoms operators. Anyone in the vicinity of the stations can receive the signals on their cell phones.
By temporarily disabling official signals, the illegal mobile operators can send messages — usually spam — to nearby cellphone users.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his South African counterpart, Jacob Zuma, exchanged congratulatory messages Sunday on holding the China Year in South Africa, and the South Africa Year in China.
Such celebrations in each other's country in 2014 and 2015, respectively, will be major cultural events for China and South Africa, as well as for the friendly exchanges between both nations, Xi said in the message.
The events will certainly increase understanding and friendship between Chinese and South African peoples, and enrich the content of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, he added.
China stands ready to join hands with South Africa, by seizing upon the occasion of "the country year" celebrations, to lift their comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights, Xi said.
Meanwhile, Xi, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, congratulated South Africa on the 20th anniversary of its founding.
Zuma said the South Africa-China relations have achieved leapfrog development in recent years, urging the two countries to lift people-to-people exchanges to a higher level.
South Africa hopes to celebrate with China in 2014 both the holding of the South Africa Year in China and the 20th anniversary of the ending of apartheid, which was a victory of South Africa's democratic revolution, Zuma said.
