China and Britain should make concerted efforts to ensure Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to Britain is successful, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the United Nations Tuesday.
Xi will pay a state visit to Britain next month at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II, Wang said during a meeting with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.
During the visit, China and Britain will chart the course for the future development of bilateral ties and work out a long-term plan for the two sides' cooperation in various fields, he added.
He said China and Britain have recently exchanged frequent high-level visits and held a series of meetings and dialogues, paving the way for the Chinese president's visit.
Hammond said Britain is looking forward to Xi's visit and will speed up efforts to make good preparations.
He expressed the hope that the visit will boost the two countries' relationship as well as their cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, finance, investment, infrastructure, and international and regional affairs.

Martyrs' Day marked across China
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/09-30/183225.shtml
Sep 30th 2015, 13:48
Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders attended a ceremony Wednesday in Beijing's Tian'anmen Square to honor deceased national heroes on Martyrs' Day.
Veterans wearing medals on their chests, family members of martyrs and representatives of all walks of life gathered at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tian'anmen Square to mark the country's second Martyrs' Day on the eve of the 66th National Day.
Premier Li Keqiang, top legislator Zhang Dejiang, senior leader Liu Yunshan, top discipline inspector Wang Qishan and Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli also attended the event.
The marble monument, the foundation of which was laid on Sept. 30, 1949, stood tall against a blue sky. On the pedestal are eight reliefs depicting major episodes in Chinese revolutionary history since the First Opium War (1840-1842).
A military band played before the ceremony began. An honor guard stood in front of the monument.
Martyrs, as defined by the government, are "people who sacrificed their lives for national independence and prosperity, as well as the welfare of people in modern times, or after the First Opium War."
It is estimated that China's martyrs number around 20 million.
At 10 a.m., a crowd of around 3,000 people chanted the national anthem. Then they bowed their heads in silent tribute to those who devoted their lives to the liberation of the Chinese people and the development of new China, which was founded in 1949.
Following a patriotic song by school children in white shirts and red scarves, the uniform of China's Young Pioneers organization, 18 honor guards laid nine baskets of flowers in front of the monument.
The baskets were presented in the names of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, China's top legislature, the State Council, the top political advisory body, the Central Military Commission, democratic parties and non-party individuals, mass organizations, veterans, senior people and the families of martyrs, as well as China's Young Pioneers organization.
President Xi tidied red ribbons on one of the baskets and led a group of senior officials on a walk of tribute around the monument.
School children and other participants followed them and laid their bouquets of chrysanthemums at the foot of the monument.
China's top legislature approved Sept. 30 as Martyrs' Day last year to commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for national independence and prosperity.
Xi returned to Beijing Tuesday after his state visit to the United States and attending a series of UN summits.
Wednesday's event was the second time this month for China to hold commemoration ceremonies at Tian'anmen Square. On Sept. 3, the country commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the victory in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression with a full-dress military parade.
Xi said during his Victory Day speech that China will remain committed to peaceful development.
"No matter how much stronger it may become, China will never seek hegemony or expansion. It will never inflict its past suffering on any other nation," Xi said, as he announced a cut of 300,000 troops from the country's military.

Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall staged a performance on Monday of a 1960 work by composer Zhu Jian'er, the Heroic Poems. The symphony and chorus were based on wartime poems by China's late chairman Mao Zedong. It was the wish of 93-year-old Zhu to hear the symphony again half a century later.
"The works showed the Chinese people's bravery in facing difficulty," he said. "The performance is a salute to the 70th anniversary of the end of Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, when so many died to achieve peace that we enjoy nowadays."
In Tibet, a memorial park opened Wednesday in the border county of Zayul, where 447 soldiers who died defending the territory were buried. Their remains were previously buried at five sites, before being collected at the cemetery. A monument in the park stands 19.62 meters tall, symbolizing the year when China fought India in border dispute. Representatives of veterans and officials unveiled the monument, while soldiers carried coffins to the tombs.
"The park carries the spirits of martyrs, which is helpful for raising people's awareness of national defense," said Feng Shouzheng, a veteran.
Commemoration was also held in other parts of China, including Chongqing, which was heavily bombed by the Japanese in World War II, Jiangxi, birthplace of China's revolution, as well as Shanxi, a province ransacked by the Japanese.
"I really miss my fellow soldiers from the old days," said Duan Erbao, a 84-year-old veteran from Shanxi. "I feel so sad thinking of them sacrificing their lives in return for our happiness. The commemoration today let me know that they are not forgotten."

Apple Music launched in China

Sep 30th 2015, 07:49
Apple Inc. launched its Apple Music service in China Wednesday, tapping into a fiercely competitive market believed to be one of the largest in the world.
Chinese customers can also access iTunes Movies and iBooks online thanks to cooperation with the domestic film industry and local publishers.
Apple Music was introduced in more than 100 countries and regions following an announcement at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
The first three months for Chinese users will be free, as in other markets. The monthly subscription fee is 10 yuan (about 1.5 U.S. dollars), and the family plan provides the service for 15 yuan for up to six members with individual accounts.
The prices are less than one-sixth of those for the U.S. market.
"We think the price of 10 RMB is hard to beat for all the music and all the sensational products like radio, movies and books," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, in a tele-briefing on Tuesday. He said Apple wants to be very competitive in the Chinese market, where most songs and movies are available online for free.
He said Apple's service is unique for its cloud music library and ability to sync and save a user's spot in a book or song when switching between devices.
In 2013, China's leading search engine Baidu bought and launched Baidu music. Alibaba, the e-commerce giant, bought music service Xiami, and Netease launched its cloud music service. Social media and games leader Tencent inked an agreement with Sony last December to jointly promote authorized digital music services in China.
Apple Music is not the first to the market, but it may be arriving at the right time.
In July, China's top copyright regulator announced stricter rules for music streaming, demanding online streaming services stop providing unlicensed music to users. The regulation will boost licensing fees for high-quality music and sharpen competition in the sector.
"We will absolutely establish and build relationships with the local music community," said Cue, adding that Apple Music will try to discover artists and bring better music to customers.
Also through the iTunes Store, customers can download some of the latest Hollywood blockbusters as well as many local titles.
On local regulations and supervision, Cue said that Apple always complies with local laws and regulations wherever it operates. ' "We work closely with government and regulators for things like App Store," Cue said.
He said App Store in China has become the largest market in the world for app downloads, but he did not give specific figures.
Analysts believe it will take time for Apple Music to win market share in China since customers are used to free services and there are quite a few service providers who do not charge or charge very little.
But the "free lunch" will not last forever, and in the long run paying for music, movies and books will become common among Chinese consumers.
The volume of China's digital music market was estimated at 12.6 billion yuan for 2015, an increase of 30 percent year on year, according to a report by Analysys, a leading information product and service provider in China's Internet sector.
As the country's mobile music copyright environment improves, music service platforms will supplement existing content to meet the demands of users, said the report.
According to data in July, the country's top three music services, QQ, Kugou and Kuwo, took 40.7 percent, 28.8 percent and 22 percent of the country's market respectively. Apple's entry will change the situation soon.

Chinese films, TV shows boost travel destinations
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/09-30/183221.shtml
Sep 30th 2015, 08:04
Inspired by homegrown films and TV shows, more travelers this year plan to explore destinations that had previously not been on Chinese tourists' radar.
According to data released this month by Qyer.com, a Chinese outbound travel website, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Switzerland have emerged as promising overseas destinations for tourists this year.
The website attributes this phenomenon to hit shows and movies featuring the countries.
Released in February, romance movie "Somewhere Only We Know," directed by famous Chinese actress Xu Jinglei, served as an advertisement for the Czech Republic, where the film was shot.
Two travel-reality shows, "Sisters Over Flowers" and "Divas Hit the Road", aired in March and April, respectively.
Both featured well-known Chinese actors backpacking their way through Europe and included Turkey as a destination.
It isn't the first time tourists have looked to TV and movies for travel ideas.
Chinese tourists have flocked to Thailand since late 2012, when Chinese comedy "Lost in Thailand," shot on location in the northern city of Chiang Mai, became a blockbuster in China.
According to statistics from the Thai tourism authority, Thailand welcomed about 4.7 million visitors from China in 2013, jumping 68 percent from 2.7 million in 2012. The 2014 number dropped slightly to 4.5 million.
The newly released "Lost in Hong Kong," a sequel to "Lost in Thailand," is expected to boost Hong Kong tourism in the last quarter of 2015, given its strong box office performance so far.
"Lost in Hong Kong" has grossed around 890 million yuan (140 million U.S.dollars) in its first six days since its debut on Sept. 25, according to Maoyan.com, a movie ticket sales platform.
Due to last year's Occupy Central movement and follow-up protests, mainland travelers' enthusiasm for Hong Kong has chilled.
Data from the Hong Kong tourism authority showed the number of mainland overnight visitors fell by 14 percent year-on-year during the three-day Tomb-Sweeping Day holiday in April.
Hong Kong witnessed an even larger year-on-year decrease of 15 percent in mainland visitors during the peak season of July and August.
But now, some Chinese travel websites have regained confidence in Hong Kong tours and already planned routes related to the movie to attract visitors.
About 107 million Chinese traveled overseas in 2014, marking nearly 20-percent year-on-year growth, according to an official report issued by the China Tourism Academy in late August.
Chinese outbound visitors accounted for nearly 10 percent of the global total last year, the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) said in a market research report released earlier this month.
The WTCF noted that over half of Chinese tourists travelled to other countries more than once last year, thanks to improved standards of living and rising income.
According to Qyer.com, Japan, Italy and the United States are the top three overseas tourist destinations for Chinese travelers during the upcoming seven-day National Day holiday, which starts on Oct. 1.

Ivanovic no match to Muguruza at Wuhan Open
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/09-30/183220.shtml
Sep 30th 2015, 08:03
Garbine Muguruza produced a spectacular mid-match turnaround to stun Ana Ivanovic and take her place in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open on Wednesday.
After dropping a tight first set, Muguruza, No. 5 seed, elevated her game to another level, hurtling towards a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ivanovic, No. 9 seed.
"I was expecting a difficult match. In the first set I think Ana was playing good. I was playing good also," Muguruza said. "But I don't know, in the important moments I didn't find my best level.
"In the second and the third I found my way, and my tennis level was great. So I'm very happy with my improvement through in the match."
Next she will face either Kristina Mladenovic or Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Victory there and Muguruza will take a significant step towards the WTA Finals in Singapore.
"I have no idea. I don't know how's it going," she said when asked about her chances of reaching the Finals. "I don't know how much is the difference or whatever.
"If I go, it's going to be great. If not, it's also going to be good. I am not going to be that obsessed with Singapore. I'm doing well. Definitely I'm trying to go, but I just want to stay calm."

Xi's visit takes Sino-U.S. relations to higher level: envoy

Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the United States last week took China-U.S. relations to a higher level, said the Chinese ambassador in Washington on Tuesday. [Special coverage]
"The two sides achieved their targeted goal of enhancing mutual trust through the state visit," Cui Tiankai told a reception for the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
"The state visit further highlighted the international dimension of China-U.S. relations." Cui told about 1,000 guests.
He noted that Xi and U.S. President Barack Obama agreed to continue the endeavor to build a new model of major-country relationship based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation.
The two sides reached important agreement in various fields, such as economics, trade, energy, people-to-people exchanges, science and technology, agriculture, law enforcement, cybersecurity, defense, aviation, and infrastructure, Cui added.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to further cooperation on regional and international issues as well as global challenges, and agreed to endeavor to build a relationship of positive interaction and inclusive cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, Cui said.
"They decided to enhance communication on UN peacekeeping, development cooperation, the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, food security, global health, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response."
Following the historic joint agreement on climate change last November in Beijing, the two presidents issued a joint statement on climate change again, reaffirming their determination to promote sustainable development and the transition to green, low-carbon, and climate-resilient economies.
Cui stressed that China and the United States also reaffirmed their commitment to addressing disagreements in a constructive way, which will have a far-reaching impact on China-U.S. relations.
"Strategic communications at the top level undoubtedly helped the two sides understand more about each other's concerns. This paved the way for proper management of the differences so that they won't stand in the way of our cooperation."
Cui expressed the hope that Washington will also be ready to do its part and "together, we can certainly make this world a better place for our future generations."

Andrzej Glos, a 36-year-old software designer, and his wife Evgeniya Glos take care of their six daughters during the class break at a university in Ningbo, Zhejiang province on September 28, 2015. The Polish couple came to China to study Chinese as overseas students in Zhejiang Wanli University this September. They carry their daughters, aged between ten years and eleven months old, wherever they go. Since they haven't found a suitable nanny, they have to take turns to attend classes - one has to take care of children when the other has classes. (Photo/CFP)

Although shares of U.S.-traded Chinese firms tumbled in recent months due to turbulence of China's stock market, the U.S. capital market is still valuable for those targeting global businesses, said Wang Song, founder, chairman and CEO of ChinaCache International Holdings Ltd.
Most U.S. investors are more professional, experienced and have better knowledge in industries such as the Internet, because most of leading companies are there, Wang said.
On the other hand, the U.S. market has a complete understanding of financial audit and management, which will be an advantage when looking for global business partners, Wang added.
ChinaCache, China's leading total solutions provider of Internet content and application delivery services, went public on the Nasdaq in 2010.
The company launched the repurchase program up to $6 million worth of American Depositary Shares on August 24, after witnessing its share price fluctuated in August.
"The buy-back program shows our confidence in the company, as we believe we are undervalued in the long run. It also helps strengthen investors' confidence." said Wang.
Set up in 2007, Chinacache U.S. branch now serves high-profile customers including the global largest software technology companies.
Chinacache founded the North American R&D center in Silicon Valley in 2011. "We now recruit locally, which is more effective," said Wang.
The U.S. is the leading innovator in the Internet field globally, while China boosts a huge market. Introducing the advanced technology to the Chinese market at the enterprise level will enlarge the effect and benefits both sides, Wang added.
"Of course, simple copying and repeat construction will eventually deteriorate the industry development. Only innovation and industry upgrading can be the way out," said Wang.
Part of ChinaCache Atecsys Cloud Data Center will be officially put into operation by the end of the year in Beijing.
"Our vision is to build the first neutral data center in China, which is accessible to all users, with our own fiber. ChinaCache Atecsys Cloud Data Center will be first real data center network service provider in China," said Wang.
The data center business would be an industry upgrading of traditional content delivery network (CDN) and would be the company's important business in the long-term development, Wang added.
In order to meet Beijing's green standard, the power-intensive center will be equipped with the environmental-friendly gas-fired power generation system which utilize the waste heat for cooling.

Gorgeous new dining lounge and bar from the 'M' Restaurant Group
There was an outpouring of sorrow when Glamour Bar closed late last year the venue had been a staple of Bund-side drinking for the best part of a decade. But now it's back, in a self-referential manner of speaking, minus three letters. The new dining lounge and bar from the M Restaurant Group has taken over the space that was formerly the Crystal Room, adjacent to M on the Bund but make no mistake, Glam is still a different beast to its predecessor.
Entering through a crystal curtain, you're greeted by a glorious taxidermy peacock;the colour palette of blues, greens and gold continues throughout the room, complemented by a selection of artworks, most of which come from owner Michelle Garnaut's private collection. Dining tables and chairs fill half of the room, with the rest of the space dedicated to the bar and lounge seating. It's appropriately glam, but the space remains unpretentious and intimate.
The drinks list was compiled by David Wang (who helped helm the bar at Glamour) and provides a few different avenues for imbibing. You can opt for a glass of wine from a selection of 32 bottles dispensed from enomatic machines, try an expertly mixed cocktail, or go down the gin and tonic pick'n'mix path (from 78RMB for a Beefeater Gin base) where you can choose from multiple tonic flavours (think cherry blossom or elderflower) as well as adding 'something special' in the form of dill flower ice, pomelo or chamomile bitters.
From among the cocktails, the Saffron & Spice (78RMB) mixing saffron-infused brandy, apricot bitters, star anise syrup and lemon is a fragrant, sweet and sour drink that invigorates the taste buds. For a short and intense sip, opt for the Fire & Ice (98RMB), where flaming absinthe and amaretto are added to a large cube of ice, fresh grapefruit and black pepper. The Fellini Martini (88RMB) is a similarly solid bet, playing off the espresso martini by adding Nutella and chocolate bitters to the mix.
Seeing plates of food zipping out from the kitchen, it's hard to resist the temptation to order something to eat too. The food menu was drawn up by M on the Bund's executive chef, Hamish Pollitt, who mixes an array of flavours and textures in a playful and seriously tasty way.
Small, barfriendly bites start from 32RMB for two tiny but balanced beet and goat cheese tarts. For 48RMB you'll get a small plate of morcilla pintxos that are rich and meaty in flavour, and crazily moreish. A lighter bite comes in the form of the 'Thai Tah Tah' (68RMB), which offers a generous serving of spiced beef tartare with pomelo and pickled green mango for a fresh and fragrant snack.
The 'Truffled Cheesey Toastie' (38RMB) provides the perfect drinks accompaniment or late-night snack. It's simple, but the light crunch of the bread, coupled with the pillowy soft interior makes it extremely satiating. Less successful are the dense Sicilian ricotta dumplings (46RMB), but this misstep is quickly forgiven if followed by the cubes of spiced pork (48RMB) with chilli jam taste explosions that are a must-order.
If you're staying for dinner or are after something more substantial, opt for the wonderfully satisfying royal king crab omelette (136RMB)or the rich and succulent gingerglazed duck dome pie topped with buttery, flaky pastry (108RMB). When you're done, there's a 'Folly Trolley', with a revolving selection of desserts displayed in verrines (42RMB for a coupe) to round off your meal that is if you can resist the temptation to head to the soft serve machine (28RMB per cone).
Glam looks set to fill the shoes of its predecessor as the perfect spot for a quiet drink on The Bund, while carving out its own unique identity. The polished but relaxed atmosphere makes it suitable for an aperitif, dinner, a night cap or even all of the above.

Glam looks set to fill the shoes of its predecessor as the perfect spot for a quiet drink on The Bund, while carving out its own unique identity. The polished but relaxed atmosphere makes it suitable for an aperitif, dinner, a night cap or even all of the above.

Taiwan's meteorological authority lifted warnings for Typhoon Dujuan at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday after it battered the island, disrupting traffic and causing casualties on Monday.
At least two people were killed and 324 were injured when the typhoon made landfall in eastern Taiwan on Monday evening, the island's emergency operation center said.
The center of Typhoon Dujuan left Taiwan at 1:00 a.m Tuesday from Fangyuan Township in western Taiwan's Changhua County after a three-hour stay in the island, the meteorological department said.
Most of Taiwan continued to experience rain and strong winds.
Dujuan caused power outages to more than 1.95 million households at some point during Monday. Some 500,000 households are still without power, according to Taiwan power company.
The island's high-speed rail lines and regular train networks resumed service on Tuesday afternoon.
Bon Jovi's live concerts originally scheduled on Monday and Tuesday in Taipei were both canceled, the local promoter said, which means there would be no concerts for the American music legends who arrived in Taiwan on Sunday.

Alibaba hasn't changed, investor perception has: former VP
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/09-29/183075.shtml
Sep 29th 2015, 05:27
As the Alibaba Group's stock continues to fall, Porter Erisman, former vice president, defended his previous employer, saying the market is overreacting.
"In that one year since it went public, almost nothing changed about Alibaba. The only thing that changed was the outsiders' perceptions," Erisman told Xinhua.
Though Alibaba's shares have slid below its IPO price of 68 U.S. dollars per share, Erisman isn't surprised. "Given China's slower economic growth rate, that seems pretty reasonable to me," he said.
When Alibaba went public a year ago, it was a top pick for investors. Its initial public offering was the biggest in history. The company peaked last November, with its stocks trading at about about 119 U.S. dollars, followed by a long slow slide.
"If anything, it just proves to me that a company shouldn't be focusing on what the investors say," said Erisman, who worked for Alibaba between 2000 and 2008: "Alibaba should really just focus on what it does best and the customer."
When Erisman first joined Alibaba, he was told the company would go public in one month. But when the Internet bubble burst in 2000, the idea was abandoned. Looking back, he said, "It's probably the best thing that's happened to Alibaba. If you're just chasing the IPO, it's easy to get lost, because you're just trying to make a good story for investors. Much better to build a great company that focuses on the customer and then an IPO comes naturally someday."
He believes Alibaba's record-breaking IPO "proved that its patience paid off, focusing on the long term."
When Alibaba was launched, e-commerce and even the Internet in general had not taken off in China. By focusing on empowering small businesses, the company was one of the first to help e-commerce take root in China.
Erisman said Alibaba's business model is more suitable for developing countries, as e-commerce in the West is more about big companies and retailers. ( "It used to be that people would compare themselves with Amazon or eBay. Now when I go to India or Nigeria, people are trying to build the Alibaba of their own.
"The place where the infrastructure is the least developed, actually, in the long term, that's the greatest opportunity," he said.

Global endeavor needed to promote women's rights
http://www.ecns.cn/voices/2015/09-28/182966.shtml
Sep 28th 2015, 08:22
As about 80 world leaders discussed gender equality and women's empowerment at a UN summit Sunday, the fact that women's rights are not guaranteed in many parts of the world is reminding us that global efforts are urgently needed in this regard.[Special coverage]
Women worldwide are still facing violence, poverty, lack of access to higher education and relatively low representation in political as well as economic decision-making bodies.
Statistics show that gender disparity widens at the secondary and tertiary school levels in many countries, that women earn 10-30 percent less than men for the same work and that only 22 percent of all national parliamentarians were female as of August 2015.
A recent World Bank report said that women in the Middle East and North Africa face the most hurdles in getting a job or starting a business and that Saudi Arabia is the most restrictive economy in the Middle East in terms of women's ability to work or start a business.
Against such a backdrop, it is very necessary to hold such a summit, at which Chinese President Xi Jinping made a four-point proposal on further advancing women's rights worldwide. The proposal indicates the direction for women's development and solutions to current challenges.
The proposals include striving for women's development in tandem with social and economic progress; protecting women's rights and interests; jointly building harmonious and inclusive societies and fostering a global environment conducive to women's development.
In fact, it is because the Chinese leadership attaches great importance to the pursuit of gender equality -- Xi called it "a great cause" -- that China has made significant achievements in championing women's rights.
According to the report on China's Implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015) jointly launched by the Chinese government and the UN System in China in July 2015, China has achieved gender equality in primary and secondary school education. In addition, the gap between boys and girls in terms of the years of education was narrowed from 1.3 years in 2000 to 0.8 years in 2014.
Moreover, there are more than 21 million women working in the science and technology sector, making up around 40 percent of the total number of Chinese workers in that sector, the report said.
Unfortunately, some Western media and politicians, disregarding the above facts, disseminate an inaccurate view of China's social issues by criticizing women's development in China.
The truth is that China, according to Xi, "will do more to enhance gender equality as its basic state policy" as women hold up "half the sky." Also, Xi said that his country would support women in pursuing their dreams and aspirations in both their careers and personal lives.
What's more, China, as a responsible major world country, is playing a leading role worldwide in helping women, half of the global population, to realize their dreams.
At the summit, Xi announced a 10 million-U.S.-dollar donation to UN Women, the agency promoting women's rights, to implement the Beijing Declaration and its Platform for Action and the realization of related goals in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
In the coming five years, China will help other developing countries build 100 "health projects for women and children," send teams of medical experts to provide services, and implement 100 "happy campus projects" to finance the schooling of poor girls and raise girls' school enrollment rate.
China will also host 30,000 women from developing countries for training programs in the country and provide 100,000 skills training opportunities in local communities of other developing countries.
From the 1995 World Conference on Women held in Beijing to the 2015 UN summit co-hosted by China and UN Women, China's contributions have opened up broad prospects for women's development, which needs concerted efforts from all countries around the world.

China stocks close higher despite weak data
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/09-28/182963.shtml
Sep 28th 2015, 08:16
Chinese shares closed higher on Monday despite weak industrial data.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed up 0.27 percent to end at 3,100.76 points. The Shenzhen Component Index gained 2.13 percent to close at 10,115.55 points.
Total turnover on the two bourses came in at 404.4 billion yuan (63.5 billion U.S. dollars), down from the 561.8 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Shares related to Internet security, media, and softwares were among the biggest winners while banks and insurance companies lost the most.
Monday's gain came despite a 8.8 percent year on year fall on profits of China's major industrial firms in August, which widened from a 2.9 percent decline in July, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.
He Ping, an official with the Department of Industry at the NBS, cited weak domestic demand, rise in unit costs, the stock market rout, and volatility in the yuan exchange rate as the reasons driving down industrial goods prices, which contributed to the drop in profits.
During the first eight months, profits of the industrial companies with annual revenues of more than 20 million yuan (about 3.1 million U.S. dollars) dropped 1.9 percent year on year to around 3.77 trillion yuan. The decline widened from the one-percent decrease registered in the Jan.-July period.
While the weak economic data continued to put pressure on the stock market, analysts believe market sentiment will recover as regulators finish deleveraging of the A-share market.
Almost 70 percent of margin lending accounts have been cleared as of September 23, said China Securities Regulatory Commission spokesperson Zhang Xiaojun last Friday. The margin lending businesses have been widely blamed for pushing up the leverage level of the A-share market.
As the rest of the accounts are cleared up, the market will likely to rebound in October, said Industrial Securities in a report.
The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, climbed 5.01 percent to close at 2,122.26 points on Monday.

Newly crowned men's 100m freestyle world champion Ning Zetao will compete in the 50m butterfly at the two-day FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup at the National Aquatic Center (Water Cube) from Sept. 29-30, together with Hungary's Katinka Hosszu and American star Franklin.
Ning, who claimed men's 100m freestyle title at the FINA World Championships in Kazan and became the first Chinese male to win in this sprint event at the worlds, revealed that he needs to prepare for the Military World Games in early October.
"It is my third time to compete in the FINA World Cup Beijing leg. I only compete in 50m butterfly because I need to save some energy for next month's Military World Games in South Korea. In fact, I was not in good shape after Kazan and I am still trying to recover my form," said the 22-year-old.
Katinka, who just swept eight titles in Hong Kong leg two days ago, will continue her full speed in Beijing by racing 11 events.
"I would definitely keep going and try to swim faster here in Beijing. I was really surprised what I did in Hong Kong. Yes, I will swim 11 events and I enjoy racing. Since I had won 200 and 400m individual medley in Kazan, I will continue to better my four strokes and prepare for the Rio Olympic Games by swimming many events," said the Iron Lady with a smile.
For Missy Franklin of the United States, it is her first Water Cube trip.
"I watched the Beijing Olympic Games at home from TV because I was just 13 years old. I always dream to swim in the Water Cube. I'm not in the good shape I want to be. We had two weeks off after Kazan worlds and I only came back training for a couple of weeks, It is just September, I will take World Cup as workout for the preparation for next years Olympic games," Franklin said.
The FINA 2015 World Cup in Beijing will be held in a 10-lane, 50m competition pool. More than 250 swimmers from 20 countries and regions will compete in 32 events.

Didi Kuaidi to invest $100m in Lyft, partners with LinkedIn
Two major Chinese companies made a big push to step up their presence and investments in the United States on the sidelines of a meeting between executives from both nations on Sept 23 in Redmond, Washington.
Chinese auto parts maker Wanxiang Group said it will make greater investments in the U.S., especially in clean energy, while Didi Kuaidi agreed to invest $100 million in ride-sharing transportation company Lyft.
Didi Kuaidi, China's largest car-hailing service platform, said it expects to launch a "shared software service" later this year with Lyft.
The service will allow Didi Kuaidi users to use Lyft's service in the U.S. and vice versa.
Didi Kuaidi also penned a deal with LinkedIn for the social networking platform based in Silicon Valley to take over the Chinese company's talent recruiting and training in North America.
LinkedIn's platform will eventually be integrated into Didi's ride-sharing services in an effort to expand the U.S. company's services to Chinese mobile phone users.
The major deals came after 15 Chinese business leaders met with their U.S. counterparts at the U.S.-China Internet Industry Forum on Wednesday.
Wanxiang Group is the owner of Fisker Automotive, which makes plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and the battery maker A123 Systems.
It currently has more than 40 production plants and 13,500 employees in the U.S..
Wanxiang Group has invested more than $1 billion into U.S. companies from 2012 to 2014, according to the company.
Chairman of the Board Lu Guanqiu said that he is confident in the company's development in the U.S..
He added that the company's clean energy business is growing while sales of conventional auto parts are stable.
He also called for Chinese companies investing in the U.S. high-tech sector to be treated fairly.
Will Cheng, chairman and CEO of Didi Kuaidi, said its new partnerships will allow it to learn from Lyft and LinkedIn through their extensive cooperation.
He said it's important for all companies involved to have an opportunity to engage in dialogue in an equal, open and honest manner.
China has become the second-largest innovator of Internet technologies due to the nation's drive to promote mass entrepreneurship and innovation.

The cost ineffectiveness of new energy vehicles for urban buyers
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/09-28/182912.shtml
Sep 28th 2015, 02:08
China's new-energy vehicle market is being driven by policy. According to the central government in late 2013, 88 cities are expected to get 335,000 such vehicles on the road by the end of this year.
Yet, even now, more than half of those cities are not being proactive enough and have no concrete measures to subsidize consumers to make those purchases happen.
As opposed to the first phase of the pilot project, which ran from 2010 to 2012 and saw 25 first- and second-tier cities expected to hit a 1,000 vehicle target, the second phase features small third- and fourth-tier cities, which aim to have 5,000 to 10,000 new-energy vehicles respectively by the end of this year.
Residents of these smaller cities have lower incomes and most likely do not feel it is feasible to buy a new-energy car even with the subsidies. More importantly, these cities do not have tight restrictions on car registrations, such as in the metropolises of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, so there is no incentive for someone to buy a new-energy vehicle just to obtain a car license.
Global customers purchase new-energy vehicles based on practical interests and convenience; few will consider only the concept of environmental protection. Chinese customers, however, will impart less importance on environmental protection. They are mostly influenced by better fuel efficiency, large subsidies, tax reductions and hassle-free car registration.
When the price of a new-energy car is twice that of a tradition vehicle, even after the subsidy, and while the driving range is only 150 to 200 kilometers on one charge, consumers will not feel guilty about rejecting "green" vehicles.
Looking at the sales data we can see that most are being sold in large coastal cities. Interestingly, a survey in China by AutoForesight found that more than 60 percent of respondents in smaller, inland cities were "very interested" in new-energy vehicles, compared with less than 50 percent in second-tier cities, and less than 35 percent in first-tier cities.
The results largely come down to the lower passenger vehicle penetration in undeveloped areas, as people here have less experience owning vehicles, so are more easily attracted by new technology.
Suburban customers in small cities have courtyards, so charging batteries can be done right in their backyard, and low-speed new-energy vehicles do not need to be registered with the police in smaller cities. Ironically, consumers in large cities are less interested in new-energy, but because of stringent car license registration controls, a new-energy vehicle is often the easiest way, if not the only way, to buy a car.
Subsidies are a second temptation. When subsidies are phased out by 2019, a free car plate and no traffic controls over NEVs look like the most powerful incentives for individuals in large cities. Therefore, the biggest demand for new-energy vehicles in small cities might come from institutional buyers: new-energy buses, taxis and municipal vehicles such as sanitation trucks. However, these small cities are not strongly motivated to buy 5,000 to 10,000 expensive new-energy vehicles.
Focus on public vehicles
In the first phase of the pilot project, those 25 cities hit their 1,000-unit target mostly at the end of 2012. This time, the target is much higher, so bus and taxi fleets in small cities will have to make a greater contribution to these cities' environmental protection campaigns.
The number of urban buses in China has been increasing steadily due to urbanization, roughly by 4.4 percent annually - 20,000 to 25,000 - since 2007. By the end of 2013, there were 446,604 buses on the road.
Total demand for new buses is about 60,000 a year in the foreseeable future, and according to the Ministry of Transportation, at least half of these should be new-energy vehicles.
There were just over 1 million taxis on the road by the end of 2013, with an average annual increase of 1.6 percent. The average annual demand for taxis nationwide over the next few years is expected to be 180,000 to 200,000 units a year. However, in most Chinese cities, taxis belong to individuals rather than State-owned taxi companies. When local governments give orders to taxi drivers to change their cars to new-energy ones, the response will likely be slow.
By the end of 2013, there were 126,552 sanitation vehicles. Annually, the total number is increasing by 10 percent, with the average annual demand forecast to exceed 20,000 units, among which the demand of new-energy vehicles is expected to be 10 to 15 percent because of limited budgets.
There are other discussions that logistics companies in cities should be the ideal target customers for new-energy trucks.
This is a sound plan, but it's simply an ideal. Nearly a million light trucks are sold in China every year and used for short-distance or urban journeys, but these trucks are mostly owned by individuals. Mainstream truck models are low-end products, usually priced at 50,000 yuan ($7,800) to 60,000 yuan.
High-end light trucks sell for 100,000 yuan.
It's unimaginable for those truck owners to replace their current vehicle for some 500,000 yuan new-energy truck with limited driving range unless the government wants to subsidize 80 percent of the price.
Indeed, we have heard a lot about new-energy vehicle sales to fleet customers repeatedly in the past. However, when we dive deeper, the truth is that the sales figures are not impressive.
Buses and taxis may be the most important fleet buyers now and in the future, but the overall volume is still limited.
Individual demand is the only hope for the new-energy vehicle market and carmakers have no choice but to lower their new-energy vehicle costs to reasonable levels.
Although car license restrictions could effectively force many individuals to consider buying a new-energy vehicle in major cities, automakers should respect individual consumers by offering good new-energy vehicle products because these big-city consumers are well-informed, experienced and particular about quality.
