Air China launches non-stop Beijing-Washington flight

Air China will offer non-stop flights between Beijing and Washington, D.C. four times a week from June 10 this year in the latest move to expand its network in the United States.
The flight, operated with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, is scheduled to leave Beijing at 1:00 p.m. (Beijing time) and arrive at 2:35 p.m. (Washington time) on the same day. The return flight is expected to depart at 4:35 p.m. and arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport at 6:15 p.m. the next day.
Flight numbers for the Beijing-Washington service will be CA817/818.
The United States is a popular travel destination for the increasingly affluent Chinese. China is expected to be the top tourist source market for the United States in 2018 with the number of visiting Chinese hitting 4.7 million, according to predictions from the U.S. official tourism and marketing organization Brand USA.

PMI increases in May for third consecutive month, indicating a stabilizing economy
Growth in China's manufacturing sector continued to accelerate in May, rising to the highest level this year and adding to signs of a stabilizing economy, data released on Sunday indicate.
The Purchasing Managers Index, a gauge of manufacturing activity, rose to 50.8 in May, from 50.4 in April, according to the National Bureau of Statistics and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.
The monthly reading, continuing to inch above the 50-point level, indicated that the manufacturing sector and the economy as a whole are picking up.
This is the third consecutive monthly uptick in the index, seen as one of the key indicators of economic performance, following three months of decline that ended in March.
Zhang Liqun, a researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council, said the improving data are a sign that "the economy continued to stabilize, and this trend is becoming evident".
Eight of the 12 PMI sub-indices registered growth. The production sub-index edged up by 0.3 to 52.8 after dipping by 0.2 in the previous month.
New orders, which analysts see as the most important sub-index, jumped by 1.1 to 52.3 in May, after gaining 0.6 in April.
Export orders, which slumped by 1.1 in April, reversed the declining trend to rise by 0.2 to 49.3.
The employment sub-index dipped to 48.2 from April's 48.3, pointing to contraction in the job market.
The data came as a boon to the world's second-largest economy, which had seemed to be losing steam in the past few months.
China's economy grew at its weakest pace in 18 months in the first quarter, expanding by 7.4 percent, lower than the 7.5-percent target the central government set earlier this year.
Cai Jin, deputy head of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, said that the continuously rising PMI reflects positive economic changes.
Cai pointed to the remarkable improvement in the sub-index for new orders, reflecting increasing market demand, a firm foundation for steady growth.
The official reading is also broadly in line with the HSBC/Markit PMI figure, released in late May, which rebounded sharply to 49.7 in May, hitting a five-month high.

South Korea and China made a progress in the 11th round of negotiations for the free trade agreement ( FTA) held in China last week, Seoul's trade ministry said Monday.
The 11th round was held for five days to May 30 in Meishan city of southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
South Korean delegation was headed by assistant Commerce Minister Woo Tae-hee and the Chinese side was led by Wang Shouwen, assistant minister of China's Ministry of Commerce.
The new round discussed all areas such as goods liberalization, service, investment, regulations and cooperation.
During the talks, the two sides exchanged the second offer for goods liberalization after trading the first one in December 2013. Seoul and Beijing also exchanged the second request for goods liberalization, which stipulated items of great interest.
The South Korean trade ministry said that much headway was made in negotiations about written agreements for goods and trade remedy, noting in-depth negotiations were made about how to liberalize the service and investment sectors.
For the service sector, the two sides exchanged the first request for liberalization to express respective areas of interest.
Much progress was also made in negotiations about written agreements for the regulations and cooperation, the ministry said, noting agreements were almost reached on competition and e- commerce.
The two sides will hold the next round of talks next month in South Korea, with detailed schedules and venue to be discussed later.
South Korea and China completed the first stage of negotiations in September last year for the bilateral free trade pact, with a total of seven rounds of negotiations. The talks began in May 2012.
Seoul and Beijing tentatively agreed to abolish tariffs on 90 percent of all products during the first-stage talks, but they opened the door for raising the threshold during the second-phase negotiations.
China is South Korea's No.1 trading partner, with Seoul's exports to Beijing accounting for a quarter of the total in 2012. Since the two neighbors established diplomatic ties in 1992, their annual trade has grown almost 50 times, reaching 256 billion US dollars in 2012

The Mediterranean Regional Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine (MRCTCM) celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday evening in Paola, Malta.
Malta's Minister for Energy and Health Konrad Mizzi, Chinese Ambassador to Malta Cai Jinbiao were among the over 200 Chinese and Maltese guests who attended the ceremony.
Through a video clip, Ma Xiaowei, Deputy Director of Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission, expressed his warm congratulations on the 20th anniversary of the founding of the MRCTCM, and also extended his gratitude to the Malta government of Malta, the health ministry and people from all walks of life for the care and support given to the center.
Chinese Ambassador Cai addressed that in total 11 medical teams have served at the MRCTCM over the past 20 years, and their excellent service, top experts and effective treatment have helped the center earn a good reputation among Maltese and people of other nationalities, he hopes the center would develop more about the education function from which more and more Maltese people can benefit.
Malta's Minister Mizzi also expressed his gratitude to the center for 20 years' hard work and his expectation that one day the center could be the most influent Chinese medicine center in Malta as well as in the Mediterranean region.
During the event, Wang Xiaolan, director of the MRCTCM, announced the winners of a Writing competition of "Chinese Doctors through My Eyes" which was launched 2 months ago.
Kurt Sciberras, 22, who serves in the government, won the first Prize. He told Xinhua that his story was about he and his mother came to the center for Chinese acupunctures at the first time, he was really impressed by the Chinese traditional medicine.
The MRCTCM was officially established in 1994 by the Chinese government and Maltese government. The Health Department of China's eastern Jiangsu Province is responsible for dispatching medical teams biennially.
In the past two decades, the MRCTCM received a total of 140,000 patients including local people, foreign visitors, diplomats, Chinese residing in Malta as well.
Apart from providing Chinese medical services, the MRCTCM has also actively carried out lectures on traditional Chinese medicine, provided courses on Chinese self-Massage.
Two of the MRCTCM doctors work outside of the Center, running outpatient services at two state-run hospitals, one on Malta and the other, Gozo General Hospital on its sister island, Gozo.
When it opened in 2008, the traditional Chinese Medicine clinic at Malta's national hospital of Mater Dei was the first of its kind at a European public hospital. The MRCTCM also becomes the teaching practice base for some Chinese Medicine colleges in Europe.

Chinese embassy in Afghanistan has termed the media reports on halting dollar transaction between the banks of its country and Afghan commercial banks as baseless.
"The media report which claimed that the Chinese banks have halted dollar transactions with most Afghan commercial banks recently is utterly groundless," Counselor Chen Shijie, Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan said in a statement released here on Sunday.
The Banks of China and Afghanistan have normal business ties, the statement said, adding China attaches great importance to developing its relationship with Afghanistan and is willing, as always, to work together with the Afghan side to promote the bilateral cooperation in all fields.
Certain media outlets reported recently that the failure of the Afghan government to approve Anti-Money Laundering and Prevention of Financing Terrorism Law has prompted Chinese banks to stop dollar transactions with commercial banks in Afghanistan.
The intergovernmental Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has warned that Afghanistan will be placed on a blacklist that would severely reduce international investment in the country if fails to approve Anti-Money Laundering and Prevention of Financing Terrorism Law.
Afghanistan has just 20 days to ratify the law, according to local media reports.

Chinese general Wang Guanzhong says China and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region are concerned about the consolidation of the US-Japan alliance.
His comments were made during the Shangri-la Defense Forum in Singapore. Wang Guanzhong stressed that such a military alliance was more an obstacle than an impetus for regional stability. Wang pointed to China developing its own military force to defend the country's peaceful development.

Chinese general Wang Guanzhong says China and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region are concerned about the consolidation of the US-Japan alliance.
