Beijing hosts inauguration ceremony of World AIDS Day activity

An inauguration ceremony of the World AIDS Day themed activity was held in Peking University on Nov 30. The activity was themed around enjoying youth. A red ribbon health envoy also visited the campus.
Li Bin, minister of the NHFPC; Wang Guoqiang, vice minister of the NHFPC; Wang Hongyan, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League; Zhang Wenkang, chairman of the Chinese Association of STD/AIDS Prevention and Control; Zhu Shanlu, Party secretary of Peking University; and Wang Enge, president of Peking University, attended the event. Peng Liyuan, WHO goodwill ambassador for HIV/AIDS prevention and control, was invited to the activity.
This year's Dec 1 marks the 27th World AIDS Day. The theme of this year remains "Getting to Zero", with a focus on joint efforts to break difficulties and contain HIV/AIDS. The activity aims to hammer home to all society the importance, chronicity, arduousness and complexity of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment through a series of publicity and education sessions. It calls upon all governments, departments, social organizations and volunteers to work together to combat the disease, reach the 2011-2015 goal and contain the epidemic.
Wang Guoqiang introduced China's achievements in HIV/AIDS prevention and control as well as the grim situation at the moment. Wang Hongyan explained HIV/AIDS prevention and control activities by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League for teenagers. Zhang Wenkang introduced the main content of the theme activity this year. Bai Yansong, publicity ambassador of China Red Ribbon Foundation; Wang Kerong, head nurse of the red ribbon department of Beijing Ditan Hospital; and young volunteers asked students to value the health of themselves and others. Jiang Wenli, an artist, gave a poem reading with children afflicted with the disease. Students from Peking University showed their action as volunteers. Participants all kicked off the themed activity, which invited 16 public figures from art and sports fields to act as red ribbon health ambassadors for HIV/AIDS prevention and control on campus.

Chinese companies keen on Rio 2016 Games

Two of the world's largest scale and most multifaceted events - the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games -- are coming to Rio de Janeiro in less than two years.
Rio 2016 procurement director Fernando Cotrim is responsible for developing the organizing committee's supply chain. The mission includes ensuring that 30 million items are available, from ballpoint pens to sports equipment, furniture, horse food and even ships, a variety of articles unparalleled in scale.
The operation includes more than 60 thousand square meters of storage space - divided between the Barra, Deodoro and Maracana zones - and more than 1,000 outsourced professionals.
Cotrim faces the greatest challenge of his career and is welcoming cooperation from Chinese companies.
The official mascots of the games -- a bright yellow cat-like character for the Olympics and a mop-headed doll for the Paralympics -- were unveiled on Nov 24. A company from China is the licensed manufacturer and vendor for both mascots, as well as the official pins for the games.
Last month, a Chinese sports apparel maker became the official uniform supplier for the games, agreeing to provide more than 106,500 uniforms to technical staff, volunteers, test event personnel and torch relay participants.
"Two Chinese companies have been included in the supply chain for the games. One is 361 Degrees for the uniforms and the other is Honav for the production and sales of pins and mascots," Cotrim told Xinhua in an exclusive interview recently.
"As far as I know, in other bidding process like furniture, there are also Chinese companies eager to be part of the supply chain," he added.
Cotrim said that about 80 percent of the supply chain would be negotiated in 2014 and 2015.
"We'll establish product and service catalogues and we'll do the last-minute adjustments to our logistics before it becomes operational. Between 2015 and 2016, we'll focus our efforts on managing supplier contracts as well as the logistics chain to ensure that everything goes according to plan," he said.
As China hosted the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games, many Chinese companies with Olympic experience are keen to take part in the Rio games.
Cotrim said he hoped that after experiencing the Beijing Olympics, Chinese companies could understand the bidding process of the Rio games supply chain and become actively involved.
In 2013, Rio's supply chain team made a special trip to China to discuss the procurement schedule of all materials and services needed. In addition, according to the Chinese Embassy in Brazil, some Chinese companies also came to Rio looking for deals during the preparation stage.
Cotrim said the games would be a boon to Chinese companies exploring overseas markets.
"I heard that 361 Degrees is going to enter the Brazilian market through the promotion of the Rio Olympic Games," Cotrim said. "I believe their brand will prosper not only in Brazil, but in the whole of Latin America."
Cotrim said that some Chinese companies have chosen to join the supply chain by cooperating with their European and American counterparts. He suggested that Chinese companies that want to participate should not only study the legal and tax environment, but also understand the operational mechanisms of the local market.p "Only if you have an in-depth understanding of the local market and know how the market runs, can you effectively avoid the risks and reap the benefits," said Cotrim.
The cartoon-like mascots and the official uniform are also big business.
Organizers hope that Olympic merchandise, much of it carrying the mascot logo, will generate sales of 1 billion reals ($400 million). The organizing committee will receive about 15-20 percent of the sales of branded merchandise, with the rest going to licensed manufacturers and vendors.

The seventh China-US Internet Industry Forum began in Washington on Tuesday, bringing over 150 government officials, industry leaders and academics to discuss the reality and prospects of cooperation on cyber issue between the two countries.
The China-US relation on the Internet issue is now an important component of the new model of major power relationship between the two countries and decides the future of both countries to a great extent, Lu Wei, minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, told delegates of the conference.
"We should see that consensus and cooperation are the main streams. Not only should we seek the common grounds in spite of differences, but also make joint progress based on the common grounds," he said.
He noted that differences should not be obstacles. "It is precisely through these differences that we can complement each other and create all kinds of possibilities for cooperation and mutual benefits," he said.
Catherine Novelli, US under secretary of state for economic growth, energy and environment, said the United States and China should cooperate and are cooperating as the two countries share common interests on cyber issues.
The two-day forum is co-hosted by the Microsoft Corporation and the Internet Society of China.

China and the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday signed an agreement on Chinese donation of $6 million to aid global fight against Ebola. The deal was signed by assistant minister of commerce Zhang Xiangchen and Alain Noudehou, the UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Program Resident Representative in China. The donation will go to the UN Ebola Response Multi-Partner Trust Fund to support the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response. The move is part of China's fourth round of Ebola-fighting aid announced earlier by President Xi Jinping.

Schools and traffic were suspended in northeast China's Heilongjiang province on Tuesday as an ongoing blizzard continued pelting the region with snow.
More than 100,000 students in primary and high schools and kindergartens were asked to stay at home after snowstorms battered the cities of Jixi, Mudanjiang and Jiamusi, according to local education authorities.
Many expressways were closed across the province and the airport of Dongji, located in the border county of Fuyuan, was also closed.
Snow depth reached up to 70 cm in the county seat of Fuyuan, leaving residents struggling to open doors to their homes.
"I got up at 5 am, and the snow on the ground had reached my waist. It was hard to open the door," said local resident Kong Fanjun.
Sanitation departments in the county mobilized staff to work around the clock to clean accumulated snow on road. Heating suppliers were asked to ensure the function of the heating systems as the temperature in the county reached as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius.
According to the Central Meteorological Center, more snow is expected to hit most parts of the province from Tuesday to Wednesday, with snowfall estimated at 10 to 14 mm.
