Japanese PM hears protest at Stanford University

Demonstrators gathered on Thursday outside of a Stanford University facility on the U.S. west coast and urged Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to stop distorting history.

Initially asked to stay away within an area designated by police, the over 100 demonstrators surged toward the entrance of Bing Concert Hall upon seeing Abe's arrival and shouted "liar" toward the visiting prime minister.

They were referring to Abe's continued denial of Japanese imperial army's role in forcing up to 400,000 women, mostly Korean and Chinese nationals, into sex slavery in the Second World War before it was defeated in August 1945.

In the question and answer session after a speech at Harvard University on Monday, Abe labeled comfort women as "victims of human trafficking," a sign that he blamed the suffering of the women on local people other than the Japanese army.

For a moment, apparently hearing the demonstrators' chanting, Abe turned his head toward the direction of the crowd.

Meanwhile, a group of seven Korean American students put up signs and stood along the line of Stanford students ready to get into the concert hall.

Obviously targeting Abe's speech at Stanford, supposedly about "innovation issues", one of their signs reads: "Innovation Starts from Not Repeating the Same Mistake."

The demonstration was organized by Global Alliance (GA) for Preserving the History of World War II in Asia and at least another Chinese American community group along with some Korean American groups.

Allen Ho, chairman of GA, vowed to continue demonstration and follow Abe wherever he goes in north California, including an electric car plant in Palo Alto near Stanford and a hotel in downtown San Francisco where the prime minister stays.

Large real estate project by Chinese developer starts to construct in London
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-01/163830.shtml

A 600-million-pound (922 million U.S. dollars) real estate project developed by Chinese Greenland Group in Wandsworth, London laid foundation stone on Thursday.

The Ram Quarter project, the Chinese leading developer's first scheme in Britain, covers an area of 30,000 square meters, with a total planned floor area of 90,000 square meters. Greenland aimed to develop it into a large scale residential complex, integrating apartments, affordable housing and commercial facilities.

"London, as an international financial center, provides an excellent environment for investment, giving us great confidence in future developments and investment," said Xu Jing, Greenland Group's Executive Vice President.

Xu said that the group's accumulative investment in London was expected to reach 1.3 billion pounds in the next few years.

Edward Lister, deputy mayor of the Greater London, said that the Ram Quarter Project will transform the area into "a very vibrant and exciting quarter."

"We are trying to build 50,000 homes a year in this city, we need partners like Greenland," he added.

Chinese, U.S. research reveals key driver of human aging
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-01/163829.shtml
May 1st 2015, 05:19

Chinese and U.S. researchers working on a premature aging disorder said Thursday that changes in heterochromatin, a tightly packed form of DNA, could be blamed for the aging process in humans.

The findings, made possible through a combination of cutting- edge stem cell and gene-editing technologies, could lead to methods of preventing and treating age-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, they reported in the U.S. journal Science.

"We proposed a new theory that suggests the disorganization of heterochromatin is a key driver of human stem cell aging," senior author Guang-Hui Liu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Biophysics in Beijing told Xinhua.

Liu called their work "an important supplement" to the current aging theory, which proposes that aging is a consequence of unrepaired accumulation of naturally occurring DNA damages.

In the study, scientists at the Salk Institute and the Chinese Academy of Science looked at Werner syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes people to age more rapidly than normal.

Werner syndrome affects around one in every 200,000 people in the United States. People with the disorder suffer age-related diseases early in life, including cataracts, type 2 diabetes, hardening of the arteries, osteoporosis and cancer, and most die in their late 40s or early 50s.

The disease is caused by a mutation to the Werner syndrome RecQ helicase-like gene, known as the WRN gene for short, which generates the WRN protein, so the researchers created a cellular model of Werner syndrome by using a cutting-edge gene-editing technology to delete WRN gene in human stem cells.

The resulting cells mimicked the genetic mutation seen in actual Werner syndrome patients, so the cells began to age more rapidly than normal.

On closer examination, the researchers found that the deletion of the WRN gene led to disruptions to the structure of heterochromatin, pointing to an important role for the WRN protein in maintaining heterochromatin.

And in further experiments, they showed that the protein interacts directly with molecular structures known to stabilize heterochromatin, revealing a kind of smoking gun that, for the first time, directly links mutated WRN protein to heterochromatin destabilization.

Finally, they compared stem cells isolated from six young and six old individuals and found a marked downregulation of WRN protein and a decrease in the level of heterochromatin derived from old individuals, further suggesting that accumulated alterations in the structure of heterochromatin may be a major underlying cause of cellular aging.

"This has implications beyond Werner syndrome," senior author Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte of the Salk Institute said in a statement. "It identifies a central mechanism of aging -- heterochromatin disorganization -- which has been shown to be reversible."

Belmonte noted that more studies will be needed to fully understand the role of heterochromatin disorganization in aging, including how it interacts with other cellular processes implicated in aging.

China shuts down media involved in blackmail
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-01/163826.shtml

China's press regulator announced Thursday that it has revoked publishing licenses of a business news website and a weekly newspaper that were caught blackmailing.

The website of the 21st Century Business Herald newspaper and the weekly publication Money Week were penalized after they were found to have forced clients to sign advertisement and service contracts by threatening to publish negative news about them, said the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) in a statement.

The website and weekly, along with the 21st Century Business Herald newspaper, were also found to have irregular management practices, the statement said.

The 21st Century Business Herald was ordered to conduct internal inspections and restructuring of its management board, it said.

The website and both newspapers are affiliated with 21st Century Media Ltd.

About 30 suspects involved in the cases, including Shen Hao, former president of 21st Century Media Ltd., were arrested and put under criminal investigation for forced transactions, blackmail, breach of duty and accepting bribes. In February, prosecutors started to review their cases and prepare for prosecution.

"Media involved in blackmail have had a vile social impact, seriously harmed public interests, undermined market order and marred the credibility and image of journalists," the SAPPRFT said.

The SAPPRFT statement warned all media organizations to learn from the incident and step up their internal regulation of news reporting.

Press regulators said they will continue fighting misconduct, and those who indulge in wrongdoing, harbor offenders and neglect their duties will face investigation and punishment.

DPRK top leader cancels planned visit to Russia

Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un canceled his planned visit to Moscow for the Victory Day celebration on May 9, the Kremlin said Thursday.

"We were informed of the decision via diplomatic channels ... The leader cited interior affairs in his country as the reason for his absence," the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The spokesman denied allegations that the decision of the DPRK leader came after Moscow probably received warnings from some other countries against the presence of Kim in Moscow.

"That is certainly not the case," Peskov said.
