HK receives fewer mainland visitors
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-02/163847.shtml
May 2nd 2015, 00:27
Hong Kong has seen a decreasing number of tourists from the Chinese mainland in the first quarter of this year.
As for the Labor Day holidays starting from Friday, tourism industry insiders say they are not optimistic about visitor arrivals in the city.
The Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong predicts that the number of tourist groups that the city receives will decrease by 10 percent. Currently, 70 or 80 percent of hotel rooms in Hong Kong are reserved, which means fewer visitors and reduced retail sales revenue.
Michael Wu, the chairman of the council says Hong Kong does not rank high in the minds of mainland tourists.
"When mainland tourists choose destinations, they are more likely to choose Japan or South Korea or Taiwan. If they take visa issues into consideration, they probably choose Hong Kong. Many of them just transfer at Hong Kong's airport, but they will not consume goods or services here."
According to the latest statistics from the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the total number of visitors to the city decreased by one million in March 2015 when measured on a monthly basis. That was the third consecutive month the figure decreased.
Compared to last year, the number of tourists dropped almost 9 percent. Overnight visitor arrivals from the mainland decreased by 18 percent, about double the average drop rate.
Michael Li, executive director of the Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners notes that tourism in Hong Kong is still being affected by internal troubles and influences from other countries.
"On the one hand, prices in other places are lower, (for example), the Japanese currency has been devaluating, and some tourism destinations are visa-free now; on the other hand, conflicts between a small fraction of local residents and mainland visitors have had an impact on Hong Kong's image."

Manufacturing activity still sluggish
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/05-02/163848.shtml
May 2nd 2015, 00:46
China's manufacturing activity was on the verge of contraction in April, firming up policymakers' key task of stabilizing growth by new stimulus measures.
April's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, released on Friday, remained unchanged from March, at 50.1, close to the 50-point level that separates expansion from contraction, compared with 49.9 in February and 49.8 in January.
The PMI readings for medium and small enterprises in April remained below 50, while that for large companies stood at 50.6, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The subindex for employment was 48 in April, a decline from 48.4 in March, indicating fewer job opportunities in the sector. Labor at manufacturing companies has contracted since June 2012, the NBS data showed.
The official statistics agency also said the PMI for the service sector was 53.4 in April, the lowest level since January 2014, indicating a slower expansion compared with 53.7 in March and 53.9 in February.
Employment in the service sector has contracted for three consecutive months, and decreased the quickest in April, a PMI subindex reading of 48.9 showed.
Zhao Qinghe, a senior economist at the NBS, said that the downward pressure for the manufacturing industry remained heavy, as both domestic and overseas market demand remained sluggish.
Stabilizing growth
A meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Thursday highlighted that attention should be paid to the current heavy economic downward pressure.
The country's top leadership stressed that investment retains a key role in stabilizing growth while potential consumption should be further tapped to foster new growth.
A statement after the meeting said that China needs to stick to its proactive fiscal policy, with increased public spending, and its prudent monetary policy, with a focus on guiding money flow to the real economy.
The leadership also approved guidelines for the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which will transfer functions not essential to Beijing's status as the national capital from the city to neighboring areas and optimize its development.
Guan Qingyou, executive director of Minsheng Securities' research institute, said that China may see a new wave of infrastructure investment after the "4 trillion yuan stimulus package" in 2009. This time it will be guided by the blueprint of the "Belt and Road Initiative" and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regional development plan.
"The growth rate of infrastructure investment should at least be 25 percent this year to achieve the 7 percent GDP growth target, which needs about 14 trillion yuan," said Guan. "Infrastructure investment will increase faster in the second quarter."

Japanese PM hears protest at Stanford University
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-01/163827.shtml
May 1st 2015, 05:13
Demonstrators gathered on Thursday outside of a Stanford University facility on the U.S. west coast and urged Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to stop distorting history.
Initially asked to stay away within an area designated by police, the over 100 demonstrators surged toward the entrance of Bing Concert Hall upon seeing Abe's arrival and shouted "liar" toward the visiting prime minister.
They were referring to Abe's continued denial of Japanese imperial army's role in forcing up to 400,000 women, mostly Korean and Chinese nationals, into sex slavery in the Second World War before it was defeated in August 1945.
In the question and answer session after a speech at Harvard University on Monday, Abe labeled comfort women as "victims of human trafficking," a sign that he blamed the suffering of the women on local people other than the Japanese army.
For a moment, apparently hearing the demonstrators' chanting, Abe turned his head toward the direction of the crowd.
Meanwhile, a group of seven Korean American students put up signs and stood along the line of Stanford students ready to get into the concert hall.
Obviously targeting Abe's speech at Stanford, supposedly about "innovation issues", one of their signs reads: "Innovation Starts from Not Repeating the Same Mistake."
The demonstration was organized by Global Alliance (GA) for Preserving the History of World War II in Asia and at least another Chinese American community group along with some Korean American groups.
Allen Ho, chairman of GA, vowed to continue demonstration and follow Abe wherever he goes in north California, including an electric car plant in Palo Alto near Stanford and a hotel in downtown San Francisco where the prime minister stays.

A 600-million-pound (922 million U.S. dollars) real estate project developed by Chinese Greenland Group in Wandsworth, London laid foundation stone on Thursday.
The Ram Quarter project, the Chinese leading developer's first scheme in Britain, covers an area of 30,000 square meters, with a total planned floor area of 90,000 square meters. Greenland aimed to develop it into a large scale residential complex, integrating apartments, affordable housing and commercial facilities.
"London, as an international financial center, provides an excellent environment for investment, giving us great confidence in future developments and investment," said Xu Jing, Greenland Group's Executive Vice President.
Xu said that the group's accumulative investment in London was expected to reach 1.3 billion pounds in the next few years.
Edward Lister, deputy mayor of the Greater London, said that the Ram Quarter Project will transform the area into "a very vibrant and exciting quarter."
"We are trying to build 50,000 homes a year in this city, we need partners like Greenland," he added.
