China's manufacturing sector posted its best performance in more than two years, adding to signs that the world's second-largest economy is stabilizing, official data showed Tuesday.
China's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 51.2 in October from 50.4 in September, well above market expectations and the highest level since July 2014, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The manufacturing PMI has stayed above the 50-point mark, which demarcates expansion from contraction, for the third month in a row.
The sub-index for production expanded at a faster pace, rising to 53.3 from 52.8 in September and marking the highest level since September 2014.
The sub-index for new orders moved up to 52.8 from the previous month's 50.9. That helped offset weakness in new export orders, which came in at 49.2, down from 50.1 in September.
Along with the boost in production and new orders, the business expectations measure jumped to 58.5, the highest level seen since April.
NBS statistician Zhao Qinghe attributed the pick-up in October's manufacturing PMI to improving domestic demand, booming new growth drivers such as hi-tech industries, and equipment manufacturing sectors, accelerating supply-side structural reform and higher commodity prices.
According to the NBS data, the non-manufacturing PMI expanded in October at a faster pace to 54 from 53.7 in September, marking the highest level this year.
The non-manufacturing sub-index for new orders fell to 50.9 from 51.4 in September, but stayed in expansionary territory for the second consecutive month, indicating demand in the sector continued to improve, Zhao said.
The data came before the release of the Caixin manufacturing PMI, a private gauge of manufacturing activity, which showed the index expanded at its fastest pace since July 2014.
The Caixin manufacturing PMI increased to 51.2 in October from 50.1 the previous month, according to a survey conducted by financial information service provider Markit and sponsored by Caixin Media.

Chinese-made electric buses expected to run on Havana streets

Chinese-made electric buses are expected to run on the streets of the Cuban capital soon as Chinese bus maker Yutong unveiled such a model at the 34th International Fair of Havana Monday.
The battery-driven bus is expected to be the first of its kind to serve in the public transportation system in Latin America. Its debut at the Fair, the most important business event in the Caribbean state, generated excitement among government officials, business figures and local audience.
Ivan Chacon, director of international relations at the Cuban Ministry of Transportation, hopes the Yutong bus will soon become part of the urban bus service in Havana.
"We'll begin testing its performance, standards and its adaptation to our system. We hope the initial tests are positive and allow the country to acquire many more buses of this technology," he said.
The 35-seat vehicle has a battery capacity that allows it to travel between 250 km and 300 km at a maximum speed of 65 km per hour, with an average energy consumption at 0.84 kwh per km.
Hu Fengju, director for Yutong's overseas marketing, said the electric bus is introduced to meet the demand of Cuba, which is not rich in oil resources.
"Pure electric power could reduce reliance on oil," Hu said.
The Yutong bus will be charged at nights to reduce a waste of power during its low-consumption period in the city, he added.
"The bus is made with the most advanced technology today, the so-called green fuel because it is completely electrical and will allow us to save oil and also protect the environment," Chacon said.
Cubans hope Yutong will transfer the bus technology and localize its production.
"In this initial phase we'll promote the commercialization of the bus, but we're interested in the transfer of technology, management methods and the development of the Cuban industry to work along with Yutong and assemble this unit in the future in our country," Eloy Alvarez, deputy minister of industry, told Xinhua.
This is the newest of the over 20 types of buses Yutong has shown on the island since 2005, with nine of them currently in sales that account for 90 percent of the local market.
Cuba, along with Venezuela and Chile, is Yutong's major markets in Latin America. "Latin America is Yutong's major strategic market and Cuba is our entry point," Hu said.
Yutong's exports to Cuba range from urban buses, long-distance buses, school buses to construction heavy machinery and chassis.
The leading bus maker in China exports vehicles to more than 190 countries. As the first in China to develop new energy buses, Yutong has delivered 8,000 fully electric buses that are running in more than 140 cities.

Airbus' new model to make debut in China

The newest model of aircraft manufactured by Airbus is set to make its debut here in China. The European manufacturer's 'A350' arrived in Zhuhai City in south China's Guangdong Province on Saturday.
The aircraft will participate in several events during the 11th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. It will also visit the Chinese cities of Haikou, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Airbus' launch of the new aircraft is seen as an effort to challenge U.S. rival Boeing and their respective long distance aircraft - the 787 Dreamliner.
The A350 is designed to fly faster with higher fuel efficiency. More than half of the aircraft uses lighter composite materials. And by using new engines, fuel consumption has been reduced by 25 percent.

Handwritings and symbols found at Emperor Liu He's tomb

The site of Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24) Emperor Liu He's tomb recently offered new findings as the archaeological work has entered the stage of dismantling the outer coffin. Archaeologists have found numerous handwritings and symbols at the bottom of the outer coffin, according to Nanchang Evening News.
Liu He (92-59 BC), who was later given the title "Haihunhou" (the Marquis of Haihun), was the grandson of Emperor Wu, the greatest ruler of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), one of the most prosperous periods in Chinese history.
Handwritings and symbols seen at the coffin bottom
The main coffin chamber of Liu He's tomb has been dismantled since September, and now the third level of the tomb is under extraction and dismantling. Crosstie and charcoal will be extracted later, which may reveal remains of sacrifices or other relics.
Archaeological expert Yang Jun said that they found handwritings and some symbols on the coffin and their meanings are still unknown, but archaeologists guess it marks the information of the coffin, such as the size and origin. Yang revealed that the dismantling work will last for two months. Archaeologists will number each piece of coffin wood, which will be recorded, photographed and scanned before dismantling. After that, experts will excavate or dissect the tomb bottom for two months. The dismantled coffin wood will be dehydrated, undergo insect and pollution proofing and restored to the original position after the excavation work.
Ancient bamboo book discovered in the tomb
According to a previous report from the magazine Archaeology, the bamboo book unearthed from the Haihunhou tomb titled Wu Se Shi Sheng (Five-colored Food Treasure) is a book about the art of necromancy with five colors representing five kinds of food, resembling the Chinese wuxing (five phases of wood, fire, earth, metal and water) theory.
However, according to experts from Fudan University, "green" and "white" are only words about colors discovered in the book, which refer to black and white. As there was a chessboard found in the tomb before, experts guess the book is about Liubo, a popular chess game from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). After comparing with other chess-related books, the experts are more certain about the conclusion, who said that the Wu Se Shi Sheng should change its name to Liubo Chess Manual, which will be the first discovered book about Liubo chess.
As the archeological work of Liu He's tomb comes to an end, the Number 2 tomb that belongs to Liu He's wife will undergo excavation soon after the approval of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

The International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) will provide five million U.S. dollars in 2016 to assist in eradicating poverty in Laos.
According to information at Lao-Chinese Seminar on Poverty Reduction held Monday in Lao capital Vientiane, the money will be used to alleviate poverty in Vientiane and Luang Prabang province in the Southeast Asian country.
The seminar aimed at sharing lessons learned by Lao officials from training programs in China, discussing the roles and functions of the Chinese delegations visiting Laos and perspectives of the tasks of National Committee for Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (NRDPE) of Laos, while also targeting capacity building in rural development and poverty eradication for Lao government staff from different sectors.
Speaking at the seminar, Thongvanh Vilayheuang, Vice Chair of NRDPE, said the seminar was of great significance in assisting poverty eradication in Laos and strengthening the traditional and longstanding good relationship between Laos and China.
Laos has been collaborating with the IPRCC, engaging in seven types of training programs and high-level visits to focus on sharing experiences and upgrading methodologies based on China's extensive efforts to alleviate poverty.
"We are exchanging experiences with each other to try to eradicate poverty. Laos has good land, electricity and water so the country has a good environment with its small population. Cooperation with neighboring countries was crucial to exchange lessons learned and to facilitate poverty eradication efforts," Li Shaojun, Chief of Cooperation Division of IPRCC said at the seminar.

A unique Chinese martial art was exhibited in its birthplace in north China on Monday.
The two-day exhibition of Baijiaquan, or "eight extremes fist", opened in Mengcun Hui Autonomous County in Hebei Province, drawing over 1,000 practitioners from China and other countries such as France, Denmark and Russia.
Baijiquan is known for explosive, short-range power and elbow and shoulder strikes. With a history of nearly 300 years, the martial art was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
Mengcun, the birthplace of Bajiquan, built an international training center in 2006. Over 2,000 practitioners from over 30 countries and regions have come to the village to watch and learn.
"Bajiquan is an important part of Chinese martial arts," said Wu Lianzhi, deputy chairman of Hebei Wushu Association, also the seventh lineage holder of Mengcun Bajiquan.
"The training center helps foreign visitors better understand Bajiquan and it serves as a platform to spread Chinese culture to the rest of the world."
