Tens of thousands of local and international visitors headed to beauty-spots and tourist destinations in Vietnam during the traditional Lunar New Year holiday (locally called Tet), which lasted from Feb. 15 to 23 this year, local media reported Tuesday.

Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City travel firms served more than 58,000 tourists in the city during the nine-day Tet holiday, an increase of 39 percent year on year, with total earning jumped 50 percent to 540 billion VND ($25.32 million), according to the city's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Meanwhile, more than 30,000 tourists visited Sapa, a mountainous resort in northern Lao Cai province during Tet, with local hotel rooms fully booked. Travel has become easier since the opening of the new highway linking capital Hanoi to Lao Cai last year, said the provincial tourism department.

Thua Thien-Hue province in central Vietnam welcomed more than 75,000 tourists, including 40,000 foreigners, during the holiday, a rise of 15 percent.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the Star Pride cruise operated by Destination Asia Vietnam Company, carrying 190 international visitors, arrived at Tien Sa Port in central Da Nang city. Another flight from Seoul of South Korea carrying 180 international tourists arrived at Da Nang International Airport on the same day.

The number of foreign visitors to Da Nang reached 66,000, out of 200,000 tourists to the city during Tet.

Khanh Hoa province, also in central Vietnam, received an estimated 150,000 tourists during the first six days of the Lunar New Year. Most tourists preferred sightseeing and island tours off Nha Trang Bay.

Most of the foreign tourists visiting Vietnam during Tet were from China, Russia, Japan, France and the United States, according to the Vietnam News daily.

The one-time coal capital of Tongchuan, Shaanxi province, is trying to remake itself into a leisure and health center.

To that end, the city government has developed Yaowang Mountain scenic area, which includes a number of healthcare and tourism projects, according to Jing Xiaoxi, deputy director of the administrative bureau of the Yaowang Mountain scenic area.

"Yaowang Mountain was where the famous ancient Chinese doctor, pharmacist and health expert Sun Simiao (581 682) worked and lived. He wrote more than 80 works about Chinese medicine and healthcare on the mountain," Jing said.

With its rich heritage and historical resources, the scenic mountain was approved as a national Chinese medicine education base in December.

The city was once the coal-production base in China, but pollution severely damaged the environment and made the city one of the dirtiest in China in the 1990s.

Since undertaking its transition, the city has closed more than 400 companies with poor pollution-control production lines for coal and cement.

"Our city is a producer of coal, but we do not use coal for heating and cooking, and our cement production has strict pollution control measures," Jing said.

Along with pollution control, the city has also paid more attention to planting trees and grass, and has forest cover of 45.1 percent and public green space reaching more than 10 square meters per person.

Thirty-two crested ibises, highly endangered birds found only in China, were released into a specially built zone in Tongchuan in 2013.

The city has now become one of the top three for living in the province.

Three people were confirmed dead and six others are sick from poisoning in an illegal gold mining operation in Henan province, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The Songxian County government sent rescuers to a deserted mine on Saturday after receiving tips from the public about the mining operation.

According to a police investigation, the miners are all local farmers who tried to use chemicals containing sodium cyanide to recover gold from the deserted mine. They were poisoned by the gas emitted from the toxic chemical.

Three people have died and six others are still in the hospital.

The case is under further investigation.

Official data showed on Tuesday that China's land area used in real estate development fell sharply last year as the property sector hit a rough patch.

New home construction used 151,000 hectares of land in 2014, plummeting 25.5 percent year on year, the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources said in a report.

A major contributor to China's economic expansion, the property market has been affected by weak demand and an excess of unsold homes. The country's GDP growth fell to a 24-year low of 7.4 percent in 2014.

The real estate market continued its downward trend with new home prices in January registering month-on-month declines in most cities surveyed.

At least 20 injured people were sent to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon after an explosion at a tunnel construction site scared off tourists in Southwest China's Sichuan province.

Two of the hospitalized were suffering serious injuries, while the others were treated for bruises, according to the Chengdu Economic Daily

The blast occurred in Luodai, a tourist town 30 km away from the provincial capital of Chengdu city. The town was packed with visitors sight seeing during the seven-day Lunar New Year holidays.

Photos of black smoke billowing in the air were posted on SinaWeibo, a Twitter-like microblogging service, immediately after the incident happened.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and evacuated nearby villagers.

VC firms find a sweet spot in travel agencies
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/02-24/155603.shtml

Venture capital firms are increasing their investments in Chinese companies that curate outbound and weekend travel plans for domestic customers, industry sources said.

"With the Chinese government keen on upgrading domestic consumption, we are extremely positive on companies that provide outbound travel and weekend getaway packages," said Jixun Foo, managing partner of global VC firm GGV Capital.

Foo has already led investments in several such deals, including one for Chinese online travel agency Qunar, Beijing-based vacation apartment booking platform Tujia, a San Francisco-based last-minute hotel-booking app called HotelTonight and taxi-hailing app Didi Dache.

What makes the case for VC investment even more appealing, is that the number of outbound travelers from China stood at about 114 million by the end of last year, a 16 percent growth from the numbers seen in 2013, said a report published by the China Tourism Academy.

According to Foo, the number of outbound travelers from China is set increase by 20 percent to 30 percent every year, over the next five years, with places like Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macao set to see the maximum footfalls.

"It is also important for outbound travel companies to offer good services (air tickets, hotels, and entertainment programs). They should be able to cover many areas at a fast pace and offer competitive prices," he said.

"As there are several big companies in China offering air ticket and hotel booking services, new players can hope to attract customers with personalized entertainment packages," he said.

"We are extremely positive on firms that provide weekend getaway packages, as we believe that such companies will be in huge demand," said Foo.

Yet another sector that offers rich pickings is vacation apartment rentals, as there has been a sea change in the way people take their holidays. Earlier, most of the travelers would just visit a place for a short time and spend most of the time visiting the sights. That has now changed, with tourists keen on spending more time at the tourist spots to enjoy their holidays. This has triggered huge demand for vacation apartments as it is much more convenient and cheaper than a hotel room and more suited for the entire family, said Foo.

"Using technology innovation or the usage patterns, a start-up company can easily find an entry point to do big business and compete with large players," said Foo. "It is certainly a boom period for companies that provide outbound and weekend travel services."

Cao Yi, founding partner of Source Code Capital, a venture capital firm that has invested in Haiwan, a company that provides diversified entertainment products for outbound travel, said many VC firms are keen on companies that provide various tourism-related services at outbound destinations.

"With more giants entering the outbound travel market, it is the right time for startup companies to showcase their capabilities," said Cao.

Li Wei, a partner at Beijing-based PartnerAngel Inc, who has led investments in Xianlvke, an overseas local tour guide booking platform, and Shanghai Travo Information Technology Co, which runs a mobile travel application said the diversified travel demands of tourists offer several new investment opportunities for VC firms.

Li said her firm is keen to invest in companies that provide online to offline related travel services, especially those that are innovative and can bring benefits to users directly.

However, most online travel investment deals have been expensive, even those at the very early stage, Li said, adding that the company is now scouting for similar deals in overseas markets, like the United States.

China's mobile-based online games grew rapidly last year, powering growth in the country's game industry, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has said.

A CNNIC report showed China had 248 million mobile online game players by the end of 2014, surging 32.9 million from the previous year.

Thanks to the development of 4G network and smartphone hardwares,China's online game players are turning from computers to mobile phones, a new powerhouse to drive the vibrant sector, according to the report.

The number of people accessing the Internet from mobiles totaled 557 million by the end of last year, up 56.7 million year on year and accounting for 85.8 percent of China's total online population.
