More than 90,000 drunken drivers caught during Euro 2016

About 92,000 people were caught drunken driving and another 12,000 were found to be driving while impaired in China during the 2016 UEFA European Championship from June 10 to July 10, Legal Daily reported on Wednesday.
According to traffic management authorities, four nationwide operations were carried out to crack down on unlawful driving during that period and, on average, 447,000 drivers were stopped and checked every day.
No accidents involving more than five fatalities were reported over the championship period and the number of traffic accidents went down by 48.1 percent compared with the same period last year, while the death toll decreased by 52.3 percent, said the report.
It added that about 30,000 of the incidents were recorded between 10 pm and 6 am, or 30 percent of the total.
The traffic management department will continue its zero tolerance approach to drunken driving and driving while impaired during the Olympic Games in Brazil next month, one official was quoted as saying.
