Repairs to a sunken section of Longyang Road in Shanghai's Pudong New Area started over the weekend and the road is set to reopen within two weeks, officials said yesterday.
A burst underground sewage pipe caused the 15-meter-long section of the road near Dongfang Road to suddenly sink by 50 centimeters at 8am on Thursday, according to the urban management authority of Pudong's Sanlin Town. No one was injured.
Three vehicle lanes on the sunken section of the road are closed and a nearby cycling lane is being used as a temporary vehicle lane. No large vehicles are allowed.
The authority is using a new method to restore the road surface and then repair the broken pipe so that it could handle at least half of the traffic within 15 days, said Ni Wei, deputy director with the urban management authority. The traditional method of repairs will take over a month for traffic to resume, he said.
Workers first dug out the sunken road surface and blocked the broken part of the sewage pipe before filling concrete into the hole, Ni said.
After traffic resumes, divers will enter the broken pipe that has a diameter of 80 centimeters through a manhole and repair the pipe with erosion-resisted polyethylene material, said Liu Yanbin, manager with the Dongbao urban engineering company which is responsible for the project.
Meanwhile, Pudong's water authority has diverted the daily sewage produced in the area to pipelines under nearby Pudong Road S., said Ju Chunfang, an official with the authority.
