Hangzhou plans to complete the renovation of 246 villages in urban areas by 2020 as part of efforts to improve living standards.
At selected sites, new urban communities will be built with modern living facilities and amenities.
By the end of 2015 Hangzhou had already finished renovation of 68 villages.
As one of the oldest residential quarters in Hangzhou, Mantoushan completed an eight-month renovation in July, transforming itself from a dirty and crowded place into a neat residential area.
The roads in the area have been widened. On the wall visitors can see classical paintings and beside 13 ancient wells locals wash their clothes and dishes. A community center covering 3,000 square meters has also been set up. A park the size of two soccer fields was also opened in August.
