Showers are forecast for the weekend but there was no respite from the scorching summer heat as the temperature touched 37.6 degrees Celsius Tuesday.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued an orange alert at 9:39am, indicating the mercury would soar above 37 degrees.

It was the seventh high temperature alert issued in nine days so far this month.

The bureau has warned residents of afternoon thunderstorms in parts of Shanghai. But the heat wave will likely persist for the next three or four days with highs of 36 degrees.

Typhoon Soulik, the seventh western Pacific tropical cyclone was marked into a typhoon at 8am yesterday.

It was strengthening by 5pm yesterday, the National Meteorological Center said, and is likely to hit Taiwan and east-central China this weekend.

Soulik is expected to enter the East China Sea around July 12, impacting neighboring Zhejiang Province.

Showers are forecast for Shanghai at the weekend due to the influence of the coming typhoon and is expected to bring with it much-needed relief.

The weather can impact the health of residents as well.

Doctors have blamed "emotional heatstroke" for the irritable behavior and persistent bad temper besides depression.

Experts have suggested ways to beat the heat: avoid going out in the heat, keep a balanced diet, have enough sleep and make psychological adjustment.
