Spring and Juneyao airlines launched direct flights from Shanghai to Taipei yesterday to tap the demand of Chinese mainland visitors to visit the island.

The two airlines began flying to Taipei yesterday after the load factors on their Kaohsiung flights which started late October hit over 95 percent.

"The market has great potential… if permitted, Juneyao is willing to operate three daily flights to Taiwan to meet demand," said Wang Junjin, the airline's chairman.

Spring, a low-cost carrier, offers a single-trip ticket at 500 yuan — lower than its counterpart — but Juneyao promised passengers better services.

Taiwan also raised its quota for individual travelers from the mainland by 1,000 to 3,000 a day from yesterday to meet rising demand. The quota for group tour members remains at 5,000 a day.

A record 2.6 million mainland travelers visited the island last year, a surge of 45 percent from 2011.

Mainland visitors have become the biggest source of visitors to Taiwan and are among the biggest shoppers, spending over US$2.9 billion last year.

Taiwan has seen a sharp influx of mainland visitors since the first direct flight was launched in 2008.
