M&S; to close 5 stores in Shanghai

British retailer Marks & Spencer is planning to close five of its stores in Shanghai this summer.


The retailer says it will continue to invest in its existing flagship store on Nanjing Road.


Marks & Spencer has said it has plans to invest in other Chinese cities this year, including Beijing and Guangzhou.


The company already has 18 wholly-owned stores and four stand-alone food stores in Hong Kong.


M&S entered China in 2008 with a store in Shanghai.


It now has 15 outlets on the mainland.


However, Marks & Spencer has struggled to brand itself in China, even though the company says this country remains a priority.
