Shanghai's unemployed youths below age 35 dropped in both the total number and jobless rate one year after a career consultation program targeting youngsters was launched, authorities said yesterday.


Before the program, there were more than 80,000 registered unemployed youths in Shanghai. The number was cut by 10.5 percent by the end of last year, officials said. The number of unemployed youngsters who have been jobless for more than a year also declined from 10,600 before the program to 8,900. However, the unemployed youths still accounted for 26.5 percent of the jobless population, a percentage higher than historical levels. Among the unemployed youths, 41 percent had a college degree or above.
