Shanghai authorities busted illegal bean curd production facilities in neighboring Taicang City Friday, and officials said most of the products were destined for the Shanghai market.
At a shabby shed, tofu was seen being dipped in dirty water and dried bean curd was placed on the ground, Shanghai-based Dragon TV news footage showed.
A dirty wok was seen and several workers did not stop working when Taicang Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau officials burst into the room.
Officials found a large number of food additives, emulsified silicone oil, anti-foaming agents and gypsum. Some didn't have production dates and inspectors couldn't identify which companies supplied the items, according to the report.
A worker told Dragon TV they made up to 150 kilograms of tofu every day.
There were nearly 100 illegal tofu production facilities nearby, bureau officials said. Tofu and bean curd products made at these unlicensed facilities had entered Shanghai, Taicang officials said.
About 700 kilograms of tofu products and more than 1,000 kilograms of illegal food additives were confiscated at one facility yesterday, said bureau official Gao Lixin.
Shanghai's food quality watchdog said yesterday that it is now investigating tofu products in the city.
