Baidu's e-mall shut over copyrights

Chinese search engine Baidu launched an online shopping mall Thursday, but the e-mall powered by cloud computing was shut down in less than 24 hours due to suspected copyright issues.
The e-mall provides service allowing users to trade electronic files, including videos, pictures, documents as well as music. Users can also post transaction information and comments. All the transactions are done via Baidu's payment platform, baifubao.
Baidu said earlier it doesn't own copyrights of all the electronic files uploaded by its users nor does it have the obligation to check the files, according to a statement detailing its cloud computing operating system. The search engine required potential users to sell copyrighted resources based on an honor system. If any copyright complaints were filed, the use of related electronic resources will be stopped, Baidu said.
The statement, however, was criticized by copyright experts. They believed Baidu's computing-based e-mall gives users much more freedom, which is likely to result in the abuse of copyrights.
It was not the first time Baidu had to deal with copyright issues.
In 2005, music companies such as Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony BMG sued Baidu for providing copyright-infringing downloads of their music. The case was finally ruled in favor of the music companies. Baidu agreed to pay royalties to get legal access to the copyrighted songs.
In 2011, renowned Chinese writers led by Han Han accused Baidu of "stealing" their works in its Wenku literary database and allowing users to download them for free. Baidu was ordered in 2012 to pay 145,000 yuan (about $22,939) to the writers for failing to take action to prevent their works from being pirated.

The Chinese Defense Ministry on Thursday urges "some people" to stop looking at China's arms sales through "colored glasses."
Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun made the remarks at a monthly news briefing in response to a report issued by Sweden's Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. According to the report, China has overtaken Britain as the world's fifth-largest arms exporter over the five-year period from 2008 to 2012.
"China exports only a very limited amount of weapons," said the spokesman, adding that even the data in the report itself showed that China's arms sales only amounted to five percent of the global total in the five years.
"And this figure is only one-sixth of that of the largest arms exporter in the world," he added.
Yang said it is unreasonable for some Western media to say China's arms exports cause problems for regional security.
The Chinese government always holds a prudent and responsible attitude toward trade on military items to other countries, Yang said.0 China holds to the principle that arms exports should not impair peace, security and stability of regions or the world at large, and China does not interfere in other countries' internal affairs, said the spokesman.
"Some people should not wear colored glasses (on this matter), and not always glue their eyes to China," Yang said.

A species of Chinese bat has been confirmed as the source of the deadly SARS virus that broke out in 2002.
An international study group, led by Chinese researcher Shi Zhengli, have isolated a SARS-like coronavirus from the rufous horseshoe bat, a species widespread in China and southeast Asia, the Chinese Academy of Sciences revealed on Thursday.
Shi is a researcher with the Wuhan Institute of Virology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The latest study results in the Oct. 30 online issue of the journal Nature, confirm a 2005 research that says bat species are natural hosts of coronaviruses closely related to SARS.
Diverse SARS-like coronaviruses (CoVs) have now been reported from other bats in China, Europe and Africa, but none is considered a direct progenitor of SARS-CoV. The two novel coronaviruses isolated from horseshoe bats in southwest China's Yunnan Province are far more closely related to SARS-CoV than any previously identified, and can infect cells of humans, pigs and monkeys, the researchers said.
The SARS virus killed about 800 people during 2002 and 2003. Palm civets sold at live animal markets were previously believed to be the direct source of the virus, but evidence suggested that civets were not the original hosts.
Bats are also hosts to several other viruses, including Hendra and Nipah, but the chances of human infection by these viruses are slim, researchers said.
Bats play important role in natural ecological systems, and the best way to avoid pathogenic infections from bats and other wild animals is to protect their habitat, according to the researchers.

The Australian national science body, CSIRO, has confirmed that the SARS virus that killed 774 people originated in horseshoe bats from China.
The SARS-CoV pandemic killed 774 people of the 8094 people infected, a case fatality ratio of almost 10 per cent. With cases diagnosed across the world, the pandemic had an impact on international travel and trade.
The research team, led by Professor Shi Zhengli from Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and including CSIRO and Duke-NUS scientist Professor Linfa Wang, have just had their breakthrough results published in the prestigious journal Nature.
While researchers globally have previously used genetic sequencing to demonstrate that bats are the natural reservoirs of SARS-like CoVs, this is the first time that live virus has been successfully isolated from bats to definitively confirm them as the origin of the virus.
The team successfully isolated a SARS-like CoV, named SL-CoV WIV1, directly from faecal samples of Chinese Horseshoe bats using the world renowned bat virus isolation methodology developed by scientists at CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratory in Geelong.
The results will help governments design more effective prevention strategies for SARS and similar epidemics.
Horseshoe bats are found around the world, including Australia and play an important ecological role. Their role in SARS-CoV transmission highlights the importance of protecting the bat's natural environment so they are not forced into highly populated urban areas in search of food.

A pedicab driver is now receiving treatment in a Hebei province hospital after law enforcement discovered him on the side of a highway with a length of his intestines hanging out of his belly.
According to reports, Tan Cheng of Taikang county, Henan province was using a glass jar to cover a five to six-centimeter long segment of exposed intestine spilling from his stomach when highway personnel found him and a friend asleep in the back of his three-wheeler on October 26.
Tan told officers he drove his companion to receive follow-up treatment after undergoing abdominal surgery in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang earlier this year, and decided to drive a pedicab to save money.
The two had covered 300 kilometers in two days before running out of gas 125 kilometers away in Xingtai before deciding to have a rest.
Law enforcement approached the vehicle as motorized three-wheelers are forbidden on highways.
However instead of giving them a ride, the officers pulled the tricycle off the highway and filled it with fuel before sending he and his companion on their way.
The report did not specify whether Tan's shocking condition occurred back in Henan or en route to the hospital.

Top two oil producers see 20 pct YOY profit growth in Q3

Both of China's top two oil producers announced Wednesday a nearly 20 percent year-on-year growth in net profit for the third quarter, as the new fuel-pricing mechanism improved the profit margins of their refining business.
Sinopec, China's largest refiner, reported its net profit attributable to its shareholders reached 22 billion yuan ($3.6 billion) in the third quarter, up 20.15 percent from a year ago and 63 percent from the second quarter, higher than market estimates.
PetroChina, China's largest oil and gas producer, also disclosed the same day that its net profit rose 19.4 percent year-on-year to 29.8 billion yuan in the third quarter.
Boosted by the bullish news, the A-share prices of Shanghai-listed Sinopec and PetroChina surged by 3.46 percent and 2.23 percent respectively at market close Wednesday compared with the previous trading day, higher than 1.48 percent uptick of the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index.
"The two leading oil producers have enjoyed higher margins for their refining business after the policymakers launched a new fuel-pricing mechanism in March," Sun Yansong, an analyst at C1 Energy, told the Global Times Wednesday.
The new pricing scheme triggers fuel price adjustment every 10 working days down from the previous 22 days. The shorter cycle of adjustment allows domestic fuel prices to move more closely with the conjuncture of global crude oil markets and allow them to pass the rising cost to consumers in times of upward global market movement.
Sinopec's refining business achieved an operating profit of 6.4 billion yuan in the first nine months, over a loss of 16.5 billion in the same period a year ago.
PetroChina cut losses by 19 billion yuan in its refining business in the first three quarters compared with the same period of last year, the company said.
The improved economy in the third quarter also boosted demand for oil products, which contributed to the strong financial performance of the oil producers, Li Hong, an analyst at 100ppi.com, a commodities and energy market intelligence provider, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
However, the net profit of the two oil giants in the fourth quarter may not be better than in the third quarter as the country starts to pay more attention to environmental protection and adopts measures to make the air cleaner, Li said.
China's cabinet, the State Council, announced in September stricter fuel standards in an effort to reduce car emissions after heavy smog plagued many cities and regions at the beginning of 2013.
According to the timetable for fuel quality upgrades, gasoline should meet the phase-four standard in 2014 and diesel by 2015; both gasoline and diesel should meet the phase-five standard with sulphur content for fuel set at no more than 10 ppm (parts per million) by 2018, equal to Europe's Euro V vehicle emissions standard.
With the mandate, the top two State oil giants which account for about 80 percent market share of China's refining capacity, have to upgrade their technology to raise the fuel quality, which needs a large amount of investment, Li said.
More cities after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are expected to roll out auto purchase curbs to ease fuel emissions and auto congestion, which should reduce the demand for gasoline, she said.

A Weibo user in Shanghai snapped a picture of a security booth straddling the sides of a half-meter tall flower bed along Pudong New Area's Yanggaozhong Road.
The two-meter tall guard box sticks out over the sides of the short stem wall, with its four caster wheels suspended in mid air, reads the message posted by "Liangmintiaoci", an account often linked to that of Shanghai-based Xinmin Evening News.
Iron guy wires fastened to large stones beside the flower bed hold the booth in place.
According to the post, a security guard at the booth explained it was property of the adjacent hotel supplies market and was placed on the wall so it wouldn't block the entrance or sidewalk.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Hunchun city in northeast China's Jilin province just before dawn Wednesday, causing no injuries or damage, local authorities said.
The quake hit the city at 4:17 a.m.. Its epicenter at a depth of 539 kilometers, was at 43.3 degrees north latitude and 130.9 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
Most people in the city slept through the quake.
An official from the earthquake bureau in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture said the quake was deep-focused and would not be felt or cause damage.
Huichun is on the only deep-focus earthquake belt on China's mainland. Quakes in this region generally have a focus depth of more than 500 km.
Only earthquakes occurring at a depth of less than 70 km are considered "shallow".

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta vowed on Tuesday to advance relations between the two countries.
China always attaches great importance to its ties with Italy, regarding the country as a positive force in its relations with the European Union (EU), Wang said.
He added that China and Italy have been accommodating each other's core concerns on the basis of mutual respect.
Wang said China is willing to enhance political mutual trust and high-level exchanges with Italy and improve mutual beneficial cooperation standards, so as to consolidate and broaden bilateral relations at a higher level.
China will actively support Italy to well run the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in 2014 and the Milan Expo 2015, said the foreign minister.
Letta, for his part, said both Italy and China have a long history of ancient civilizations.
Italy is committed to deepening relations with China and expanding trade and investment, regarding bilateral diplomatic and economic cooperation as a priority, he added.
The prime minister voiced hope that China would take an active part in next year's ASEM and the Milan Expo 2015.

At least seven people went missing after a Chinese fishing vessel collided with a freighter from the Republic of Korea on Bohai Strait near east China's Shandong province, the provincial maritime rescue center said Wednesday.
The center said the collision occurred at 3:40 a.m., when nine people aboard the fishing vessel fell into the sea. Two of them have been rescued by a passing boat.
The center has sent signals to seven passing fishing vessels to aid the search and rescue for the seven missing crew while sending patrol vessels and helicopter to join the search mission.

Australia on Tuesday maintained a ban issued by the previous Labor government to bar China's telecom company Huawei from bidding for the country's high speed national Internet program, local media reported.
According to reports, Australian Attorney-General George Brandis has issued a statement, indicating that the government would uphold the ban due to security concerns.
The previous government's decision not to permit Huawei to tender for the National Broadband Network (NBN) was based on advice from the national security agencies, Brandis told media.
"Since the election the current government has had further briefings from the national security agencies, and no decision has been made by the new government to change that existing policy." he was quoted as saying.
However, Communication Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Trade Minister Andrew Robb recently provided support to review the ban, raising hope the controversial policy would be relaxed.
Huawei Australia issued a short statement to media saying "it understands no decisions have been made by the government regarding the NBN."
A local analyst told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that the current conservative government's decision would give a big blow to the relation with its major trading partner China when the two countries were struggling to reach a free trade agreement (FTA), which Prime Minister Tony Abbott hoped for success in a year.
Federal Labor MP Michael Danby stressed it was a "right call" to keep the ban and he doesn't expect there would be an impact on finalizing the FTA with China.
Even if it does, the intelligence agencies advice should be accepted, he told media.
Huawei Australia was banned by the former Labor government earlier last year from tendering in the NBN project over security reasons. Shortly after that, the United States also issued a congressional report, saying Huawei and ZTE, another Chinese telecom company, pose a security threat to the U.S. and should be barred from U.S. contracts and acquisitions.
The U.S. report were dismissed by Huawei Australia Chairman John Lord as "protectionism," not security.

China Southern Airlines takes off in Australia

China Southern Airlines has capped off a remarkable rise week, with the touching down of its first A380 into Sydney, the latest milestone in a successful strategy that has redrawn the China-Australia map and seen exchanges between the two people's flourish.
Deputy State Premier Andrew Stoner was on hand to welcome the first China Southern (CSA) A380 flight into Sydney on Monday, calling it an important service for Australia-bound Chinese visitors who now surpass New Zealand visitor numbers to NSW.
"China Southern's maiden flight into NSW marks a major milestone as the very first A380 to arrive from China into Australia," Stoner said.
The bullish decision-makers at CSA have been clawing for that extra mileage in Australiasia aiming to take a greater share of the market in 2013 by flying 11 percent more capacity than 2012, easily growing faster than the national traffic target.
Already China's largest and most recognized, CSA is boosting capacity on profitable routes and increase cooperation between subsidiaries.
Earlier this year, dynamic General Manager Tan Wangeng told the company's annual general meeting that he will be focusing on Australia and Southeast Asia.
In 2013, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has been targeting 8 percent higher passenger and freight traffic for Chinese mainland airlines.
In 2012, traffic was up over 6 percent and should CSA continue its in-flight success, 2013 should see the airline enjoy traffic share from such rivals as Air China, China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.
Stoner, a well-travelled expert on China, who also assumes the state portfolio of investment and trade, said that CSA's arrival is nothing but good news for jobs, tourism and closer engagement between the two countries.
China Southern's single daily A380 air service is expected to generate 5000 jobs and contribute approximately 390 million Australian dollars (370 U.S. dollars) to the Australian economy in just one year.
Key developments in CSA's international business have included strengthening of services to Australia and, in October 2012, the deployment of Airbus A380s on the route linking Los Angeles and Guangzhou.
Speaking to Xinhua earlier this year, Tan said the company's international operations are steadily growing. "The passenger load factor on the Guangzhou to Sydney route has reached 90 percent. The company will steadily develop the Australian and Southeast Asian markets into an area in which it has unique strengths." "Since the A380 has been deployed on the route between Guangzhou and Los Angeles, the situation has been fairly good. The average passenger load factor has reached about 84 percent,"he concluded.
Stoner noted China's importance to the region.
"China has recently overtaken New Zealand as the number one source market for visitors and I welcome this extra service for Chinese passengers to get to Australia's top tourism destination, Sydney," he said.
At a ceremony in Sydney to celebrate the milestone, Stoner welcomed Mr Si Xianmin, president of the China Southern Air Holding Company and chairman of China Southern Airlines Company Limited, his colleagues, media and the passengers on-board the inaugural China Southern A380 flight to NSW.
Also present at the welcome breakfast at Rydges Airport Hotel, Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy who has been at the forefront of spruiking Australia to Chinese consumers, and lauded the joint effort by both Tourism Australia and China Southern. "Australia now welcomes more than 700,000 Chinese visitors and it's growing at more than 20 percent per annum," McEvoy said.
"China Southern is now carrying close to one in four Chinese visitors to our country."
According to Stoner, the state of NSW is Australia's number one State for Chinese tourism, attracting 61.2 percent of all Chinese tourists who visit the country.
"China now ranks as the largest international contributor of visitor nights and expenditure in NSW.
For the year ending June 2013, an 18 percent increase saw 396, 000 visitors to NSW from China, which contributed 1.3 billion Australian dollars (1,236 U.S. dollars) to the state's economy.
This strong growth in Chinese visitors to NSW is proof the NSW Government's China Tourism Strategy to increase visitor numbers from China is working.
"NSW's vast range of visitor experiences are great drawcards for travellers from China, as are the many events on the Sydney and NSW Events Calendar such as Vivid Sydney held earlier this year, which saw 7,200 packages taken by visitors from China."
Sandra Chipchase, CEO of Destination NSW, the government's tourism and major events agency, said visitors from China coming to NSW could expect to experience the best of Australia in one location.
"From pristine beaches to the outback and rainforests, and from delicious seafood and wine delights to luxury shopping, NSW has it all,"she told reporters.

(ECNS)-- Images of a wild Siberian tiger were captured by a freelance photographer on a mountain in northeast China's Jilin province last Saturday.
The pictures were shot by Wang Jinsheng near Madida village, Hadamen county, Huichun city of Jilin province. The pictures show a Siberian tiger roaming on a mountain road.
"I heard that some local villagers came across a Siberian tiger not long ago, so I expected that the tiger would come and roam in the area again," said Wang.
At 2 o'clock in the morning on Saturday, Wang drove for about two hours and reached Madida village, accompanied by his brother and a reporter from a local newspaper.
About 10 a.m., while they were walking down a mountain road, they sighted the tiger about 400 meters ahead of them walking up the mountain.
"I took pictures of the tiger with a Single Lens Reflex camera and a 400mm lens," said Wang. "Since the camera can shoot six pictures in one second, I finally got 15 pictures of the tiger within three seconds, after which, we ran away as fast as we could."
An official from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has confirmed that the Siberian tiger shown in the pictures was a real one.
It's the first picture of a real Siberian tiger taken with a camera in daylight.

Hurdles remain for Australian agribusiness to fast-track Chinese investment

Contrary to widespread perceptions that Chinese investment is swallowing large swathes of Australian farmland, the latest KPMG research suggests that China is far from a major agricultural investor in Australia, and owns less than one percent of Australian farmland.
The latest report into Chinese direct investment by KPMG and The University of Sydney's China Studies Center -- Demystifying Chinese Investment in Australian Agribusiness, released Tuesday at a forum focusing on Chinese investment -- looks at the scale and composition of Chinese large-scale commercial investment into the Australian agricultural and agribusiness sectors.
KPMG has studied China's food demands and offers practical initiatives Australian companies can take to attract further investment.
"This is an important debate and now is the time to have it. Australia has important choices to make," said report co-author Doug Ferguson, Head of KPMG's Asia Business Group.
"China is not only Australia's largest trading partner, but also the largest trading partner of more than 120 economies many of which are competing for agricultural trade and investment, including New Zealand. Foreign investment in the agribusiness sector is a complex and confronting issue for many in industry, government and broader society. As a result of this focus, Chinese companies feel cautious about engaging with Australian agribusiness."
The research has found that, Chinese investment in Australia's agricultural sector really only kicked off quite recently.
"Our database shows a total of only 10 completed deals, with an accumulated value of 1.05 billion U.S. dollars invested in the Australian agricultural sector since 2006," said Professor Hans Hendrischke of the University of Sydney Business School.
"Last year, Chinese investment into Australian agriculture accounted for less than 3 percent of the total Chinese overseas direct investment into Australia, including the Cubbie Station deal. Overall, between 2006 and 2012 only 2 percent of Chinese investment to Australia has gone into agriculture."
By the end of last year China was only the ninth largest foreign agricultural investor in Australia, at 3 percent of the total outbound direct investment (ODI). This is well behind the USA at 24 percent, the UK at 14 percent, Japan at 10 percent, and even Singapore at 4 percent.
"Foreign companies are estimated to own 11.3 percent of Australian land and Chinese companies appear to own less than one percent of Australian farmland," said Professor Hendrischke.
New South Wales attracted nearly 50 percent of completed Chinese agribusiness investment in the research period, followed by Queensland (40 percent). Western Australia (5 percent) and Tasmania (5 percent).
Deal sizes tended to be smaller than other sectors, with 60 percent of Chinese investment in deal sizes of 5-25 million U.S. dollars. Only 10 percent of deals were valued at more than 500 million dollars.
The vast rural acreage in Queensland including farms, and commercial property valued at more than 70 million dollars was showcased in Chinea last month by a prominent Australian real estate company.
Landmark Harcourts' first China roadshow wound through Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Hong Kong with a portfolio of 80 Australian - mainly rural - properties valued at over 200 million Australian dollars.
However, KPMG suggests more understanding of the China's needs and cultural sensitivities are required than simply taking Australia's agricultural potential "on the road."
Regarding the strategies for tackling the challenges facing the Australian agribusiness, Ferguson encourages Australian businesses to up-skill in Asian business practices and become more culturally aware.
"The way that we feel about Asian investment must change to be more pragmatic and objective. There is much work to do on both sides. For Australia, a huge public education program which sets out the facts, explains the realities of Australia's future with Asia and China and encourages respectful, positive approach is critical," Ferguson said.
According to the report, the new Coalition Government's plans to lower the threshold at which the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) can review farm investment from the current 248 million dollars to 15 million dollars could hamper and even derail FTA talks and sound investment planning.

Authorities in Tianjin municipality pledged to accelerate efforts to reduce pollutants emitted by vehicles, a major cause of the smog that has frequently hit the city, within the next few years.
Measures include gradually phasing out so-called yellow-label cars and improving the quality of automotive fuel, according to the city's latest fresh air plan.
Yellow-label cars are heavy-polluting vehicles that do not meet phase I emission standards.
A total of 290,000 such heavy-polluting vehicles will be removed from the roads in the city by 2015, Li Qiang, a local official on environmental protection was quoted as saying by Xinhua News Agency.
By the end of 2012, the city had phased out 57,000 such vehicles. Heavy-polluting vehicle owners have been given subsidies of 18,000 yuan ($2,960) for phasing out each vehicle, the report said.
All yellow-label cars will be banned from urban areas in the city as well as built-up areas within the jurisdiction of Tianjin by the end of 2014, according to the plan.
Meanwhile, the city will build up a supply of motor gasoline that meets the national fourth-phase standard by the end of next year and an overall supply of motor gasoline that meets the national fifth-phase standard will be realized by the end of 2015, it said.
At present, the number of motor vehicles in Tianjin is about 2.4 million, emitting 500,000 metric tons of pollutants annually, the report said.

The New Zealand government on Monday welcomed the first commercial Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to the country, saying the aircraft would boost Chinese tourist numbers.
Associate Tourism Minister Chris Tremain said the introduction of China Southern Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner, replacing the A330 on the Guangzhou-Auckland daily service, was a testament to the airline's commitment to New Zealand.
"China is now New Zealand's second largest tourism market and forecasts show that arrivals from China are expected to more than double over the next five years to 450,000," Tremain said in a statement.
The 787 Dreamliner would help meet that growing visitor demand by increasing their seat capacity.
"Along with the extra flights that were recently announced during the peak summer season, these changes will enable an extra 18,000 Chinese visitors to travel to New Zealand," said Tremain.
In the 12 months to September, more than 236,000 Chinese visitors came to New Zealand, contributing NZ$645 million ($535.58 million) to the economy.
"New Zealanders are also increasingly interested in exploring China. Recent Chinese visa changes championed by China Southern now allow New Zealanders to stay in Guangzhou up to 72 hours without an entry visa to China," he said.

Tango performance
Tango, drama, music, installation art and a puppet show will present a sophisticated art scene when the curtain rises on Argentina Cultural Week early next month.
Titled "Elegant, Decorative, Enthusiastic and Unrestrained," the event will run from November 8 to 18 during the 15th Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Programs will be staged at both traditional theaters and commercial space for the first time in the festival's history.
"Bringing art programs to commercial venues will offer new exhibition space possibilities for the arts and attract more participation by ordinary citizens," says Liu Wenguo, artistic director of Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Argentine installation artist Leandro Erlich creates a new world of mirrors and shadows where visitors can become super heroes. From November 8 to 22 at the Jing An Kerry Center, visitors will see their reflected selves perform stunts such as floating in the air and climbing a wall using one hand — while they lie on the floor.
Tango, a symbol of Argentine culture, will highlight the week with a dance performance combining classical ballet and traditional Argentine tango.
"Taco, Puntay Traspie" by tango master Astor Piazzola — creator of "nuevo tango" — will be performed on November 15 at the Jing An Kerry Center and on November 17 at City Theater. Piazzola revolutionized tango, incorporating jazz and classical music.
Juan Pablo Ledo, lead dancer of Teatro Colon, will direct and star in the performance, together with the other eight finalists of the World Tango Dance Competition.
The black light puppet show "Little Luke Goes to School" will be staged on November 10 at City Theater. The background is totally black and puppets and props in fluorescent colors appear to stand out from the background, creating bizzare visual effects and an intriguing fantasy tour on Luke's way to school.
In a black light show, puppetteers do not have to be hidden from view as in traditional puppet shows. As long as they are dressed in black, they are invisible, while glow-in-the-dark puppets appear to move and dance by themselves.
The peculiar life of a nontraditional family in Buenos Aires will be presented as grotesco criollo, a kind of absurdist theater that originated in Italy and is now performed all over Argentina.
"The Coleman Family" will be staged at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center Drama Salon on November 12 and 13.
Other programs include a concert of classical tango in an octet featuring accordionist Nestor Marconi, a master class by tango choreographer Milena Plebs, and a recital by pianist Nelson Goerner.

China supports the leadership role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in East Asia cooperation and regional economic integration, Premier Li Keqiang said on Friday.
Li also promised to upgrade the Sino-ASEAN free trade agreement by enhancing trust and cooperation with ASEAN members, further benefiting the region. Li made a remarks after meeting with the delegation of ASEAN economic ministers.
The delegation, which included more than 120 officials from the member countries and the secretariat, is visiting China this week and organized road shows in Chengdu, Shanghai and Beijing.
The officials are promoting trade and investment opportunities to Chinese provincial executives and local businesses.
"China and the ASEAN have great potential in trade, investment and cultural cooperation, and the delegation's road show in China and promotion of trade and investment opportunities of the ASEAN will help actualize the 2+7 proposal," Li said.
Li, attending the 16th China-ASEAN Summit, proposed the 2+7 (two political consensuses and seven areas of cooperation) framework, which represents the new Chinese leadership's new vision on expanding the China-ASEAN relationship.
Li appreciated the delegation's trip to Beijing from South China with the country's high-profile high-speed train. President Xi Jinping and the premier have been actively promoting China's high-speed train during recent visits to Southeast Asia.
At a conference in the capital on diplomatic work on Friday, Xi said that China will strive for a sound neighborly environment for its own development and seek common development with neighboring countries.
Xi stressed the necessity of good diplomacy with neighboring countries to realize the "centenary goals" set by the 18th Communist Party of China National Congress in November: a moderately prosperous society by 2021; and a prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and modern socialist country by 2049.
CPC leadership in previous generations attached high importance to diplomacy with neighboring countries, raising important issues and a guiding policy, opening up a generally sound environment, and laying the foundation for diplomacy, Xi said at the conference, held on Oct 24-25.
With respect to geography, the environment and intertwined relations, Xi said the region has a major strategic significance. Dealing with neighboring countries "should have a three-dimensional, multi-element perspective, beyond time and space".
"China welcomes investment from ASEAN while encouraging domestic enterprises to go to the bloc to invest in infrastructure, including railways," Li said. "The infrastructure interconnectivity in the region greatly boosts the trade boom and flow. We will make it come true as long as we join hands and make concerted efforts."
Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan, Thailand's deputy prime minister and minister of commerce, said that "the ASEAN welcomes China's proposal of upgrading the China-ASEAN FTA and is willing to cooperate with China in enhancing facilities of the regional infrastructure interconnectivity to build a better future for East Asia cooperation".
Zhao Jinping, a researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council, echoed Boonsongpaisan's sentiments.
"East Asia is facing great cooperation opportunities, and strengthening infrastructure should be a top priority, which will resolve short-term challenges while setting down the foundation of long-term development.
"In addition, the establishment of the Asian infrastructure investment bank should be accelerated."
China is the fourth-largest investor in ASEAN, which in turn is China's third-largest source of foreign direct investment. Mutual cumulative investment stood at about $110 billion as of the end of August, the Ministry of Commerce says.
Boonsongpaisan said during a meeting with Chinese Commerce Ministry Gao Hucheng on Friday that next year will be another important milestone for the trade and investment relationship, since China and ASEAN have decided to upgrade the FTA by, among other means, improving market conditions and the bilateral trade balance, and expanding the scope and coverage of the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation between ASEAN and China.

'Eldergartens'soothe China's aging pain

Nursing homes which bear more resemblance to kindergartens than traditional elder care facilities, have been sprouting up in China's urban communities.
It's a new approach to relieving China's worries over taking care of its rising aging population.
When they leave for work in the morning, young, and sometimes not so young, people take their parents to the "eldergarten", a health care center inside their residential community, and collect them again after work.
"It's a great relief for the younger generation, especially those from a two-income household like us, to have help taking care of our parents," said Li Yunqin, manager of Yihe's Home, a health care center in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.
Besides recreational facilities, medical care is readily available.
"It like a second home here, but with better medical facilities and more friends," said Li.
"Their children are free from worries about safety and wellbeing when they are not around, and no one has to be away from their family for too long," she said.
The shortage of qualified nursing care for the silver generation has become increasingly obvious as China rolls into an "aging society", 10 percent or more of people at or above the age of 60.
A census by the National Bureau of Statistics showed an aged population of 194 million in China in 2012, 14.3 percent of the entire populous, and the figure will hit 437 million, or 30 percent by 2050. There were only 3.9 million geriatric beds available in 2012, helping just a tiny fraction of the aging population, according to Ministry of Civil Affairs.
It has become difficult for China's youngsters, nowadays mostly single children, to fulfill their filial responsibilities to their aging parents, or even grandparents.
Government funded nursing homes are either non-profit or operating at a low price, and must give priority to the disabled, those with low, or no incomes, or no family. They are not a solution to the problems of ordinary families. Most nursing homes are in the suburbs, inconvenient for children's visits.
Beijing has taken the lead in building communities for seniors.
Golden Heights, a branded senior citizen's health care center under the Landgent Group Co,Ltd. in east Beijing's Chaoyang district, provides a family-style retirement life with medical care, for people living in a nearby complex.
The center is "home" to more than 60 households, with an average age of 82. The center has general practitioners, pharmacists and nutritionists.
An agreement with Beijing Municipal First Aid Center, has meant a first-aid station inside Golden Heights, convenient for nearby communities.
With its pastel wallpaper and handrails in bathrooms and on beds, Golden Heights has a warm and pleasant atmosphere. A mini-theater screens old movies everyday.
"Unlike China's traditional culture of taking care of the old by keeping making them rest, we encourage self care, " said Ni Haohua, CEO of Landgent Group Co, Ltd.
"What's more, we have tried to create a familiar atmosphere rather than a hospital," said Ni.
The center helps people hold exhibitions of paintings and photography, and even encourages them to make short films.
"Our dreams never die here," said Mrs. Lu, 76, one of the first residents of Golden Heights.
For those challenged by dementia, there is a whole floor of rooms for them, with nurses taking care of them one-on-one. Toys are everywhere.
"It helps to bring back memories,"said one nurse.
Landgent has two "elderly kindergartens" in Beijing and Haikou, capital of the southernmost province of Hainan. It plans more in Shanghai, Guangdong and Zhejiang before 2015.
The State Council, China's cabinet, issued a notice in mid-September on development of the service industry for senior citizens, saying China will have built up an home care system for the elderly by 2020.
"We will all get old one day," said Ni.

Market-based interest rates on track

China yesterday published loan rates based on quotes from banks as it takes a further step toward establishing a market-based interest rate system.
Nine banks, including China's five largest state-owned commercial banks, submit the lending rates they charge their best clients on a daily basis, and the country's interbank funding center will calculate and publish a weighted average rate based on the submissions, the People's Bank of China said in a statement.
The one-year rate was 5.71 percent yesterday, compared with the PBOC-set benchmark of 6 percent.
The rate, known as Loan Prime Rate, can be used as a reference for banks to set lending rates and will gradually replace the current benchmark set by the PBOC, the statement said.
The new rate "will promote a smooth transition for the pricing benchmark from being determined by the central bank to being decided by the market," the central bank said.
"It will help lay the institutional foundation for further facilitating the market reform of interest rates," it said.
The prime rate will co-exist with the current policy benchmark lending rate for a "certain period of time," the statement said, without elaborating.
"This is seen as a step toward further interest rate liberalization," ANZ said in a note yesterday.
"We think this is a reasonable level as commercial banks normally offer 10 percent discount off the policy lending rate to the best customers."
Zhou Wenyuan, a chief researcher at Guotai Junan, said the move will create transparency in calculating the rates.
"The move also protects the interest of banks as the rate is quoted by them," Zhou said.
On July 20, China scrapped a lower limit on lending rate in an attempt to create market-oriented interest rates. Banks were previously allowed to lend at not lower than 30 percent below the benchmark rates set by the central bank.
