Xuhui District plans to build the largest open-air art exhibition area in China along the Huangpu River, officials said yesterday at the opening of the West Bank Biennial of Architecture and Contemporary Art Exhibition.

"The area will be transformed into a first-rate urban district known as West Bank, on a par with Paris' Rive Gauche and London's south bank," the Xuhui District government said.

The area will include museums, performance centers, stages, an aqua-theater and a catwalk, said Xiao Ge, a press officer with the exhibition.

District officials expect the area to attract the best architects, artists and industry leaders from around the world.

Concerts and other performances will be held as part of the West Bank Culture Corridor project.

Long Museum and Yuz Museum have already opened in the area.

The art exhibition opened yesterday in the former Shanghai Cement Factory. Visitors can learn about the history of local architecture and check out models of modern buildings from around the world.

A previous report said Shanghai and US-based film studio DreamWorks will invest more than 20 billion yuan (US$3.28 billion) to build Oriental DreamWorks, a cultural and entertainment complex along the Huangpu in the same area.

The complex will include theaters, shops, restaurants, bars and hotels and will open in 2016.

DreamWorks also plans to co-produce "Kung Fu Panda 3" with Chinese filmmakers.
