Teacher puts student in coma with shovel

(ECNS) � A 12-year-old female student in Gaolan county of Lanzhou, Gansu province, is in a coma after being abused by her teacher with a shovel, the Beijing Youth Daily has reported.
The girl named Dong Changle is also in hospital for serious injuries to her bottom and thighs.
Dong's mother said the teacher abused the girl over a petty dispute between her and some other students, which resulted in the teacher being criticized by one of his colleagues.
Some of Dong's classmates said the teacher asked two other students to hold the girl as he struck her 86 times with the shovel. The abuse lasted 40 minutes.
The teacher also physically punished classmates involved in the incident with Dong, a student said.
Yu Wanli, the teacher, said he had intended to frighten Dong, but lost control while he was beating her. He also said he would assist with her recovery.
