(ECNS) -- As Beijing subway initiated a pilot program to tighten security checks, passengers will have to go through a metal detector before boarding the subway, much like passing an airport checkpoint, the Beijing News said on Monday.
Two walk-through metal detectors have been set up, at Tian'anmen East station and Tian'anmen West station, to scan passengers, the report said. Longze station and Tiantongyuan station in the north suburb, and Bajiao Amusement Park station in the eastern Shijingshan district, will follow suit soon.
There will be another 58 checkpoints in the future.
Tighter security checks will slow huge passenger flows, and they will learn from the pilot program, a subway staffer said.
Subway passengers currently have security checks only for their belongings before boarding.
