Half of Chinese work overtime without pay

Beijing (ECNS) � A report released on Sunday says 38.42 percent of laborers in its survey worked overtime in the previous month, and nearly half of them (45.4 percent) got no compensation for the extra work.


The Chinese Labor Force Dynamic Survey, jointly issued by Sun Yat-sen University and Social Sciences Academic Press, found that in the past two years, 27 percent of laborers have worked overtime, 25 percent received unreasonable pay, 16.9 percent had to work in poor environments, 10.8 percent went without pay, and 6.5 percent got injured at work.


Most laborers have received some formal education, with 9.8 years on average, nearly a quarter of them acquired a foreign language, and 14.9 percent have participated in specialized technical training.


Labor turnover rate in 2012 was 16 percent, and 23 percent were over 45 years old.


Nearly half of laborers were employed by companies or engaged in agriculture, 11.8 percent were self-employed, and only 5.3 percent were employers.


The report also revealed that 42.5 percent of laborers were satisfied with their work, but most held a low regard for their wages and working conditions, and believed making a living was the No. 1 reason to work.
