Sony' Marvel superhero film "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" kindled the summer blockbuster movie season with a solid 92 million US dollars debut at No. 1 this weekend according to Rentrak.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has a chance to be the biggest north American opening of the year to date, but it fell percent behind the 95 million dollars April debut of another Marvel movie, Disney 's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." In terms of May openings, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" ranks No. 7.
For the sequel, Andrew Garfield returns as Peter Parker, and Emma Stone reprises her role as Parker's girlfriend Gwen Stacy. The web-slinging hero faces a trio of super villains: Electro ( Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti).
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" got 54 percent of positive critics from Rotten Tomatoes. The weekend audiences gave the film a "B+" Cinema Score overall and an "A-" from the under-25 moviegoers. Family audiences made up 33 percent of the film's overall audience, while the non-family moviegoers skewed towards male moviegoers (61 percent) and the crowd under the age of 25 (51 percent).
A 92 million dollars start for the new movie, while strong, would not be the biggest kickoff from a Spider-Man film.
In the previous trilogy directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, "Spider-Man 3" opened to 151 million dollars in 2007, "Spider-Man 2" grossed 116 million dollars over the four-day July Fourth weekend in 2004, and the original "Spider-Man" opened to 115 million dollars in 2002.
Fox's female-themed comedy "The Other Woman"performed well in its second weekend, placing No. 2 with 14.2 million dollars for a total revenue of 47.3 million dollars. Sony's Christian film " Heaven Is For Real", coming in No. 3, grossed 8.7 million in its third weekend for a total 65.6 million dollars. The blockbuster superhero sequel, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", fell 52 percent with an estimated 7.8 million dollars after five weekends in theaters, placing No. 4. The sequel has earned 237.1 million dollars in 31 days since it released in April. Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Rio 2" (7.6 million dollars), "Brick Mansions" (3.5 million), "Divergent" (2.2 million), "The Quiet Ones" (2 million), "God's Not Dead" (1.8 million) and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (1.7 million).
