Telecoms services adopt market-regulated prices

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly issued an announcement that telecommunications services will adopt market-regulated prices.


According to the announcement, telecom operators are allowed to choose flexible charging methods and pricing standards.


Meanwhile, in order to protect consumer rights, the announcement requires that telecom charging policies should be created according to the principles of legality, fairness and integrity.


Wen Ku, an official with the MIIT, said the move will boost competition and improve efficiency.


The authorities also encourage competition in the telecoms market with the "invisible hand" playing a role in the controlling of telecommunications charges.


The announcement will be put into effect from May 10, 2014, in line with the date when the current approval documents for telecommunications-related business will be repealed.
