A concert consisting of a pipe organ, a piano and a double bass will become a new experience for Shanghai residents Saturday.

It will be presented by double bass player Lu Yuanxiong, pipe organ player Joseph Butler, and pianist Evan Mitchell from the TCU School of Music. Each musician will perform solo and in concert with the others.

The concert will open with Bach's "Toccata Adagio and Fugue in C" with the double bass and pipe organ, which may induce the audience to feel it has entered a divine church, according to the musicians. The three-story-high pipe organ at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center will be used to help accentuate the effects. There will also be pieces presented by ordinary pipe organs to provide different examples of the instrument's sounds.

"It is common to hear cooperation between piano and double bass, but not that frequent for double bass working with pipe organ, considering the difficulty in coordinating the two very different voices," says Lu.

Considering the nature of the pipe organ's grand voice and the double bass's low one, audio technology and playing skills are needed to help the two achieve harmony while keeping their own colors.

"It takes time for rehearsal, while it will definitely be a fresh experience for Shanghai audiences," says Lu.

Audiences will also hear well-known piano concertos — Liszt's "Paganini-Etude No. 2 in E flat" and Brahms' "Intermezzo in B flat minor." Chinese works will include Zhao Baoyuan's "Song of the Grassland" and Wang Liansan's "Newspaper Boy."

The event is part of the Saturday Brunch Concerts of SHOAC series that offers residents easy access to classic music.
