A pregnant nurse and a young doctor were reportedly beaten up by the family of a hospital patient who died following emergency treatment in central China's Hunan Province.

The doctor was allegedly made to kneel down and strike herself on the face during her ordeal in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police are now investigating the reported incident at the No.1 Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine in provincial capital Changsha.

A witness, surnamed Li, said he saw several people asking a doctor and nurse to help their relative, a lung cancer patient surnamed Ouyang, at 3:50am.

Another witness, surnamed He, said the doctor was surnamed Wang and the nurse surnamed Tan, the Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported yesterday.

"The attack took place at around 4:20am. The patient was dying and Wang was trying to resuscitate him while Tan was dispensing drugs," he said.

Two female and three male family members were said to be present.

The witness He said he saw the patient's brother slap Tan on her face.

"I stopped him immediately, telling him she was pregnant," he said.

But the brother then turned and struck Wang on the head and one of the women then hit her, it was claimed.

Local news portal www.voc.com.cn reported that Wang was forced to kneel and slap her own face.

"They were so arrogant. They even threatened the doctor after police were called to the scene," an insider said.

"One family member who had taken part in the attack shouted, 'If I were not a public servant, I would have beaten both of you to death at the scene,'" he added.

Medical checks on Tan showed that her unborn child was unaffected.

Wang was also hospitalized. Her condition was not revealed.

Medical records showed that Ouyang was admitted to hospital on May 28.

There have been several recent high-profile cases of medics being attacked or killed by patients or their families in China, leading to protests by staff and pledges of better protection.
