Zhang Wei, an official with the office of social stability maintenance, known in Chinese as "weiwen," was shot dead on his way back from duty last Saturday in Xinlong, a county in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan province.

Xiaga, a 35-year-old man of Tibetan ethnicity, is suspected of shooting Zhang. Police have launched a manhunt in search of the suspect and are offering 500,000 yuan for information that can lead to his whereabouts.

Zhang, 36, was leading a group of people back into town after working in a rural area for over 40 days when he was shot. He was working in the area to prevent disputes during the harvest of Chinese caterpillar fungus, which is valued as a medicinal remedy in China.

Authorities believe that the suspect acted alone and shot Zhang for "revenge." No further information was given as to the motive for the shooting.
