Shanghai art galleries and museums have interesting histories and architecture in their own right. And many have their own cafes, or there are options nearby, so visitors can admire architecture and artworks, followed by a leisurely glass of wine or an espresso.

Xintiandi

Located in the center of Shanghai, Xintiandi is an affluent pedestrian shopping, eating and entertainment district, which holds the historical and cultural legacies of the city.

Xintiandi is unique because of its concept of construction. It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai (a special old form of building architecture only found in Shanghai). Its interior embodies a totally different world of international gallery, bars and cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants. When you walk into Xintiandi, you will get the taste both of Shanghai in the 1920's and the sonic modern lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.

Tianzifang

Located at Lane 210, Taikang Road of Shanghai, Tianzifang or Tian Zi Fang is an artsy area that has developed from a renovated residential area in the French Concession area. It is known for small craft stores, coffee shops, trendy art studios and galleries. It becomes one of the most popular destination in Shanghai, and a well-preserved example of local Shikumen architecture, with some similarities to Xintiandi.

Walking down the narrow lane of Tianzifang, you will wonder if you are really in cosmopolitan Shanghai. At a glance, this area looks to be a mix of old and refurbished brick houses. However, do not be fooled by the traditional old lanes or wet clothes hanging on bamboo poles above your head. It deserves a second look. You can also expect lovely novelty items such as craft, jewelry and glassware, mostly imported from overseas.

Shanghai Museum

If you're a fan of China's art and culture, Shanghai Museum is a must-see. Located at the edge of People's Square, Shanghai Museum is the home of ancient arts. The scope, depth and quality of its collections, plus the striking architecture and use of modern technology make the Shanghai Museum one of the most famous in China. It covers an area of 38,000 square meters, several times bigger than its predecessor.

The museum is divided into 10 collections: ancient Chinese bronzes; sculpture; ceramics; jades; seals; calligraphy, coins and other currency; paintings; Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty furniture; and crafts of China's national minorities.
