Shanghai Pudong traffic police are being supported by hundreds of patrol officers and urban management team members in Huamu, the largest community within the Inner Ring Road in Shanghai, to crack down on road offenses.
A monitoring and coordination center has been set up at the Huamu police station, which has street surveillance cameras and officers with cameras operating in the area, and takes calls from the public regarding offenses being committed.
"It means that we have collaborators looking out for traffic offenses covering every street now," Wang Hui, an official from Pudong Traffic Police, said yesterday.
Kuai Bin, vice chief of Huamu police, said the new center will improve the efficiency of traffic enforcement.
Yesterday afternoon, three "zombie" (abandoned) cars parked on Yinghua Road were removed by police, according to a report from urban management team members.
The cars, which did not have valid insurance and annual inspection records, were illegally parked along the curb.
"Previously, when the urban management team discovered a zombie car, it would take a long time for them to contact the traffic police, but now they just need to call the center, where the traffic police are always on standby," Kuai said.
He said busy streets around shopping centers and the Longyang Road traffic hub will be a high priority for the center, especially for offenses like illegal parking.
