There is a greengrocer in Beijing whose customers use waste from their homes as a way to buy vegetables for their kitchen.

Have anything to dump? Come here and make that waste useful.

Customers at this greengrocer bring in their kitchen waste, old papers, used batteries or even used clothes, and exchange them for store credits that can be used to purchase fresh vegetables.

This new approach to environmental protection has attracted lots of people.

"Useless things become profitable here, and it creates more room in our homes and the community. This way, I can save money and do something for the environment."

"I think this is a good idea. My grandmother will be very happy to do this because we have a lot of waste at home. Here we can turn it into lots of vegetable produce."

The idea comes from Sun Minkuan who works for a farm in the suburbs of Beijing. He's always tried to promote the environment.

Sun Minkuan, greengrocer founder, said,"We sort the garbage into recyclable and non-recyclable. We send the recyclable waste to professional companies, and the rest is left to us. For example, we carry kitchen waste in our mini-truck to the farm in the suburb of Beijing, and on the way back, we carry vegetables from the farm to sell in our store. This makes up a third of the vegetables we sell here. That's why our prices are lower than other places. Also, the space is provided by the neighborhood committee for free. So we make small profits and quick returns. "

However, after its first month, Sun's grocery store began to encounter problems.

Sun Minkuan said," The difficulty is we lack professional staff. Also, people don't know how to sort their garbage or that they can take it here. Although now we have many supporters who bring their sorted garbage here all the time, it's taken time for people to get used to it. But that's exactly our goal."

In spite of these difficulties, Sun Minkuan has just opened his second store at a university. And this Saturday, his third store will also open in a high-end community. He said these three stores will help improve his operation model in different kinds of communities. He believes that when it comes to environmental protection, persistence is the key to success.
