London(CNS)— Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming interpreted the meaning of "Chinese Dream" on Thursday, saying it is not about world domination, but national rejuvenation and living up to a world power's responsibility.
Liu delivered a keynote speech entitled "Chinese Dream—dream of the country, the nation and the people" at the 5th anniversary banquet of an organization called Young Icebreakers on Thursday.
In his speech, he argued that the Chinese dream is not one that pursues world domination, but rather one that seeks a great renewal of the Chinese nation and takes due responsibility as a big power.
He also illustrated his point by saying that in the next five years, China will import a total of $10 trillion worth of goods, with total foreign investment expected to reach $50 billion, and the total number of outbound Chinese tourists to reach 400 million, all of which will undoubtedly serve as powerful engines for global economic development.
Thus he interpreted the Chinese dream as a dream for achieving peace, cooperation and win-win outcomes.
"When talking about the Chinese Dream, the phrase American Dream will instinctively pop into people's minds," said Liu. "While the American dream embodies American culture and America's national ethos and characters, the Chinese dream encapsulates a practical dream of Chinese civilization involving the dream of all families, the nation, and the whole world."
First put forward by American historian Adams in 1931, American Dream refers to the idea that a person is able to attain opportunity for prosperity and success and realize his or her own dreams through hard work regardless of social class or circumstances of birth; while Chinese Dream refers to a dream not only for the country, the nation and the people, but also for each individual, he said. As President Xi Jinping once remarked: "Only when the country and the nation are in good shape can a good life be ensured for every individual."
Liu said the 18th National Congress of the CPC has already laid out the blueprint for achieving the Chinese Dream: "By 2020, China's GDP and per capita incomes for urban and rural residents will be double the 2010 figures, and the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects will be completed. By the mid-21st century, China will become a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious; and the Chinese Dream, namely, the greatest renewal of the Chinese nation, will be realized."
Liu also said that to realize the Chinese Dream, three key areas have been identified by the government for improving governance and achieving a great renewal of the Chinese nation. They are: focusing on economic, political, cultural, social and ecological development; expanding reform and opening up, and adhering to a path of peaceful development.
