The Hubei Provincial Education Bureau is investigating the official purchase of 3.8 million pirated copies of a student dictionary, officials said today.

A CCTV report said the bureau has distributed 3.2 million fake copies of Xinhua Dictionary, the most authoritative Chinese language dictionary, to rural students in the province as an aid program.

The pirated copies contained printing errors "20 times more than the maximum allowed" and should be destroyed according to government regulations, the CCTV report said.

The Hubei Provincial Education Bureau issued a statement today, saying it has ordered Chongwen Publishing House to stop publishing and selling the dictionary and is investigating the case, vowing to punish anyone involved in the fraud.

Xinhua Dictionary is widely used in China since its release in 1953. It is the most printed dictionary in the world with 11 editions. Its latest edition was edited by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and published by Commercial Press in July 2011.
