Meeting with Beckham cancelled after fans stampede

A visit of David Beckham to the Tongji University this afternoon triggered a stampede of enthusiastic fans, injuring five people.


The five injured included two security guards, two faculty members and an overseas student, the university said.


The exchange activity between the soccer team of Tongji University and Beckham scheduled at 2pm was cancelled and the British soccer star has left the scene.


A policeman was seen lying on the ground with blood on his face, and shoes and bags scattered on the playground.


Nearly 1,000 people waited at the scene for the visit of Beckham and students broke the door of the gymnasium and the wall formed by security guards and policemen, causing the stampede.


The scene is still chaotic and the injured have been sent to a local hospital.
