Florida eyes increased trade with office's setup

Florida set up its first business liaison office on the Chinese mainland in Shanghai yesterday.


The establishment of the office followed closely the one set up in Hong Kong on Monday, indicating the state's ambition of strengthening business ties with China.


Gray Swoope, secretary of commerce who is also president and CEO of Enterprise Florida, said the state wants to reinforce a message that it has strong manufacturing industries besides tourism.


"We hope to expand our partnership with Chinese investors," Swoope said, adding that the state also has expertise in life science, medical devices and commercial aviation.


China is Florida's largest import market and its third-largest trading partner with an annual two-way worth about $9.6 billion. Swoope sees more trade in the future which will in turn facilitate direct investment.


Over 60 Chinese companies have set up regional headquarters or branches in Florida, the fourth-largest economy in the United States, to reach other markets in the country and Latin America.


With 19.2 million residents and over 94 million visitors last year, Florida's economic output ranks 21st among the world's largest economies.
