Man stands trial for killing aged mother

A man who stabbed his elderly mother with a pair of scissors before strangling and smothering her to death went on trial on Thursday at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.


Prosecutors claimed the sexagenarian, surnamed Li, wanted to kill his aging parent as he was tired of caring for her.


Li, however, denied the accusation, saying he had acted out of compassion.


"My mother said she'd rather die than go on suffering such pain," he said.


The court heard that the woman suffered from a stomach ailment and in March of last year, had fallen and broken her leg, leaving her bedridden. Because of her gastric problems, she was unable to take painkillers and was in constant pain.


Defense lawyers claimed that after becoming distressed by his mother's ailing condition, Li on March 8 this year attempted to take her life by stabbing her with a pair of scissors.


The woman survived the attack, but told her son that she was now in more pain and that he should end her life. He did this by strangling her and smothering her with his bare hands, the court heard.


Li's lawyer said his client had a history of depression and was in a distressed state at the time of the killing. The fact Li calmly cleaned the scissors after the incident and didn't tell anyone else what he had done for three hours was evidence of his poor mental health, he said.


According to the court, Li went to his local police station about 6am on March 8, accompanied by members of his family, where he confessed to the crime. He claimed he had killed his mother about 3am.


Prosecutors dismissed Li's claims of diminished responsibility, saying he had knowingly murdered his mother.


The case is ongoing.
