Overseas demand for Mandarin teaching rises, experts say

Nearly 100 Chinese and overseas experts gathered to discuss the future of Mandarin teaching at the sixth Asia-Pacific Consortium on Teaching Chinese as an International Language at East China Normal University in Shanghai over the weekend.
Ma Jianfei, deputy director of Hanban, or Confucius Institute Headquarters, said demand is rising for Chinese language teachers around the world.
Ma said about 40 countries and regions have included Chinese language teaching in their respective education systems, with 14 in the Asia-Pacific region.

Last year, only 11.4 percent of teachers sent abroad to teach Chinese had professional training.
