Much-loved casual bar expands with new branch near People's Square

The Chalet in the former French Concession, found on Yongjia Lu and away from the area's main bar hubs, is one of Shanghai's best no-frills boozers. So, it's good news that the owners are branching out with this second venue, especially as the main winning elements of the original have been transferred -- the reasonably-priced drinks, strong pub grub and a fun, vibrant atmosphere that attracts a mixed crowd.

Found on the first floor of the Narada Boutique Hotel complex (although you don't have to go inside the hotel to find it), the layout is open and inclusive with a raised mezzanine and a huge sports screen, while The Chalet's menu has been shunted over pretty much wholesale. Tiger goes for 40RMB/large glass, there's Stella Artois on draft (50RMB/large) and most of the solid but unspectacular cocktails go for 45-50RMB.

As they are for the original, the happy hour deals here are a big draw, with draft beer, selected house wine and house pours going for 25RMB all night every Tuesday (the usual daily happy hour is 5-8pm). On Thursdays, all house wine goes for 25RMB/glass all night. Being a new venue, Chalet Plus naturally lacks the more weathered charm of the relatively secluded original, which comes into its own as a winter shelter to hunker down in for hours. However, for Shanghai residents within stumbling distance, Chalet Plus could prove to be one of its area's best easygoing neighbourhood-style bars in due course.
