Kiitos, one of our favorite small bars in the city, is no more. The owner has returned to Japan and the tiny space on Yongfu Lu has been converted into Bar Cavalcanti instead.
The new management have kept much of Kiitos' interior, though the wide range of spirits that once lined the back of the bar seems to have been reduced somewhat. In place of what was once one of the strongest cocktail menus in the city is now a fairly ordinary-looking list of basic cocktails and wines. The sole Japanese patron at the bar when we popped in seemed fairly bemused to be there. To be fair to Cavalcanti however, it has only been in operation a few days. Here's hoping they'll be adding to their drinks list as time goes on.
Just around the corner an even smaller bar has opened up shop on Fuxing Lu. Launched by the German owner behind Cozy Wine Bar & Bistro, the newcomer is entitled Brats & Beer - you can have a reasonable guess at what they're specializing in. B&B has a small range of bottled beers (from 25RMB Tsingtao to 45RMB La Chouffe) and some authentically tasty sausages (we spotted packaging from Shanghai-based delivery deli Dimo's), including bratwurst, bockwurst and curry varieties served with sauerkraut, toasted bread and a dollop of mustard for 50RMB each.
There's also draft Tiger from 30RMB, a couple of house wines for 40RMB a glass, standard cocktails from 35-50RMB and fries and onion rings (both 30RMB), too. Happy hour runs from 6-10pm Monday-Friday, with Tsingtao going for 20RMB, Tiger for 25RMB, gin and tonics for 30RMB and glasses of house red wine for 35RMB.
