Griminelli carefully selects a mix of Baroque and contemporary pieces for each recital to give an overall sense of the instrument's range. Tonight he will play Bach's Sonata in E Minor, Shubert's "Die Schone Mullev," Bizet's "Carmen Fantasy" and P. Morlacchi's "Fantasy on Mose." Both "Carmen Fantasy" and "Fantasy on Mose" are technically demanding pieces.


Griminelli picked up the instrument as a child although he admits flirting with the guitar in his teen years to try and impress girls. But in the end, the flute had a special place in his heart.


"In classical music, if you want to be the best in something you had better concentrate on only one instrument," Griminelli says. "Mastering one instrument can help you express yourself and soul."


Griminelli believes the secret of making convincing music is loving the piece you are playing.


"I try to tell a story through the music and get everyone interested in what I am saying," Griminelli says.


Griminelli fondly recalls working with Luciano Pavarotti, which helped the flutist gain greater recognition in the music world. Their 1989 album won a Grammy award.


"We cooperated on 150 concerts. It was like a dream for a young man to participate in such great concerts," Griminelli says.


The flutist has also worked with top musicians like Zubin Mehta and Georges Pretre, along with prestigious orchestras including New York Philharmonic and Orchestra De Paris.


Griminelli says he enjoys being a soloist so he has time to do crossover works with pop and jazz musicians.
