(ECNS) -- Three universities in Beijing will relocate more than 6600 students to the city's outskirts by this yearend, as a response to local government plans to move out non-capital functions.
Around 5,000 students at Beijing City University have begun their studies at a new campus located in Shunyi district since the new semester started in September. Its old campus in the city will be turned into a public service park.
Beijing Technology and Business University has also relocated 530 students to its new campus in Liangxiang Town, Fangshan district.
In turn, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture would transfer more than 1100 students to a new campus in Daxing district by the end of this year.
Besides these students, some other faculties have chosen to relocate to the suburbs for more convenient commuting.
With the "urban disease" becoming increasingly evident in Beijing, relocation of departments with non-capital functions outside the city has become a serious issue.
Beijing has decided to relocate its concentrated municipal administrative organs from downtown to its east suburban Tongzhou district, to ease the pressure of overcrowding on public services.
