The first 840-meters part on a water pipe project to connect to water resources from upstream of Huangpu River has been successfully placed between Maodao and Shimao highway in Songjiang District by this morning, 10 days ahead of schedule, construction contractors said.

The steel pipes are 4 meters in diameter, the largest of its kind in current water system locally, said Shanghai Urban Construction Municipal Engineering Co.

It is now preparing for construction of 380 meters of pipelines under the G60 Expressway, which will kick off after the Spring Festival and use pipes 4.2 meters in diameter to protect the 4-meter inner tubes, it said.

The Huangpu River Upstream Water Source Project will include a new Jinze reservoir along the Taipu River in Qingpu District and 42 kilometers of pipelines, is due for completion by the end of next year. It is expected to supply residents in suburban Jinshan, Fengxian, Songjiang, Minhang and Qingpu districts with cleaner water.

http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/12-31/194269.shtml
Jan 1st 2016, 07:12

China's outstanding foreign debt settled at 1.53 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of September, data from the country's forex regulator showed on Wednesday.

Most of the debt owed to foreign creditors resulted from short-term borrowing, as outstanding external debt with a term of one year or less accounted for 67 percent of the total, while long- and medium-term outstanding external debt accounted for 33 percent, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in a statement on its website.

The volume was down 150.3 billion U.S. dollars from the data in June.

The SAFE attributed the retreat to domestic market entities paying off debts to avert currency risks amid rising expectations for the U.S. interest rate hike in the third quarter.

The amount does not include the outstanding external debt of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions or that of Taiwan.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang exchanged New Year greetings with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday, with both sides pledging to enhance bilateral cooperation in 2016.

In a message to Medvedev, Li recalled the recent China-Russia Prime Ministers' Regular Meeting in Beijing, where the two sides reached broad consensus on bilateral ties and various issues of common concern, pushing for new progress in bilateral communication and cooperation in all areas.

With the advent of the new year, the constantly strengthened China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination is showing a good momentum of vigorous development, he said.

Li said that both China and Russia are in a critical stage of development and revitalization within the context of a weak global economic recovery.

The two countries enjoy great potential and broad prospects for expanding and deepening their cooperation to realize common development, he added.

He pledged joint efforts with Medvedev to keep close communication so as to promote development of the bilateral ties, all-round cooperation and the two peoples' well-being.

For his part, Medvedev said China and Russia, with their traditional partnership of cooperation at an unprecedented level, have set a new direction for their cooperation after the successful 20th China-Russia Prime Ministers' Regular Meeting in Beijing.

He also expressed the hope for maintaining constructive interaction with Li to benefit the two peoples in the year of 2016.

Chinese police will target crimes related to prostitution and gambling across the country during the New Year holiday, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced on Thursday.

The MPS said it has sent multiple work teams to 15 provinces and autonomous regions to supervise local crackdowns.

The teams carried out unannounced visits and cross-checks in more than 480 entertainment centers and transferred clues to the MPS for further investigation.

The MPS noticed a trend of gambling and prostitution in which law violators and suspects published illegal information online and made transactions offline with customers.

Policemen across the country have busted more than 33,000 cases related to online organized prostitution and gambling over the past year, seizing 81,000 law offenders, the MPS said.

Meanwhile, the MPS has also cracked 101 cross-border prostitution and gambling cases, nabbing 3,200 people, and freezing more than 3 billion yuan (460 million U.S. dollars) of illicit money.

All-girls classes help China's mountain minorities climb out of poverty
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/12-31/194306.shtml
Dec 31st 2015, 15:39

At 6:40 a.m., when many Chinese cities are still slumbering, life has already started at a classroom in Shangsi Middle School. In a loud chorus, 56 girls recite an 8th-century Chinese poem about conquering a famous mountain peak.

Li Pinhui, 14, sees the classroom as her second home. She returns to her actual home in Changlong Village, Shangsi County, only twice a semester, not only because the school offers free meals, but also to spare the three-hour trip across mountain roads so she can devote more time to study.

"My goal is to be enrolled by a university in Guangdong Province upon graduation," Li said.

Attending college to change their fate is a faith shared by the class, which is composed of Yao ethnic girls from the poverty-stricken mountains of Shangsi, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Schooling is not a traditional option for local Yao girls, who often quit school early to take up farming and marry. It only began changing in 2008, when the local government set up classes to exclusively enroll Yao girls.

The county now has two middle schools with all-girl classes, one for Yao girls and the other for all ethnic minorities. Food, lodging and other fees are waived to encourage families to send their daughters to school.

As China vows to enrich its remaining 70 million rural population living under the national poverty line by 2020, the class also stands out as a success story for promoting rural education to fight poverty, a strategy that is gaining momentum in mountainous regions inhabited by ethnic minorities.

CHANGING MINDS

Local officials in Shangsi believe the battle against poverty should start by fighting ignorance.

"Better education helps children in ethnic regions broaden horizons and abandon old ways of thinking that have hindered local development," said Huang Guanle, director of the county's poverty reduction office.

Huang hopes that, after receiving college education in other cities, some students will return to their impoverished hometown bringing new ideas and technology to improve local farming and industry.

But for proponents of this approach, the very first obstacle to overcome is often the old thinking that gives short shrift to education, which is still ingrained in some rural parts of China.

In Yao communities in Shangsi, the traditional belief that women do not go to school "just as dogs don't plow the fields" is so deeply rooted that even compulsory education for girls used to rely on both the strong will of the students and persuasion from education authorities.

Shangsi responded to the problem with heavy investment, attracting students from low-income families with better schools and higher subsidies. Schools also hired female teachers who had made their way from the local villages into college to act as role models.

Most important, the girls have not failed expectations. In 2014, the county was cheered by the news that out of 100 graduates in the first all-girl classes, 76 enrolled in university, a high proportion in rural China given the relatively poor education conditions.

Schooling is now a popular option for local Yao families with daughters. According to the education bureau of Shangsi, the middle school enrollment rate of Yao girls has risen to 98.5 percent from 22.6 percent in 2004.

The dream for a better life through education shines in the heart of Jiang Qingrong, a single Yao mother of four children in Changlong Village. Sitting in her poorly-lit shanty, whose only furniture is a bed and a dining table, Jiang was adamant in her decision to send all her children to college outside the mountain.

"My eldest daughter is in the Yao all-girl class. She's our pride," the mother said. "A lack of knowledge has made my life miserable, so whatever the price may be, I must ensure good education for my children."

Shale gas industry on the rise in China
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/12-31/194270.shtml
Dec 31st 2015, 15:39

In China's financial hub Shanghai, kitchen stoves now use a new energy source: shale gas, a clean energy that travels more than 1,600 kilometers to the city's homes via a series of pipelines.

China has recently made breakthroughs in shale gas exploration, both in capacity and drilling techniques, as the country moves to adjust its energy structure from its reliance on coal, which has been blamed for the foul air.

Sinopec, China's largest oil refiner, announced on Tuesday that its Fuling shale gas project in southwestern Chongqing Municipality achieved annual production capacity of 5 billion cubic meters.

This makes China one of the world's biggest shale gas developers, second only to the United States.

The new energy is transferred to eastern areas like Shanghai, while also powering the middle and southern parts of China via Sinopec's pipelines.

In the mountains of Chongqing's Fuling District, 253 tall drilling wells are working day and night over an area of more than 220 square km, with 174 wells constantly transferring shale gas across China. It was only three years ago that shale gas was first extracted from the field.

"I think the burning fire from the first drilling well in 2012 not only lit up hopes of shale gas commercialization, but really, really empowered our confidence in its future exploration," said Yang Guosheng, general manager of Sinopec Jianghan Oilfield Service Corp. (SJOSC), a Sinopec subsidiary in charge of the Fuling field development.

SHALE GAS ON THE RISE

First extracted as a resource in the U.S. in 1921, the highly efficient energy has been applied in a variety of sectors, including heating, power generation, automobiles and chemical production. China has about 26 trillion square meters of shale gas reserves, the largest in the world.

While regular natural gas is extracted from sedimentary rocks, shale gas, mainly methane, comes from delicate shale formations, making the new energy resource difficult to extract with traditional methods.

China began extracting the resource in 2011, with Sinopec building the first shale gas well in the central province of Hubei, but the process proved no easy task.

"Traditionally we use vertical wells for gas drilling, but because the gas is stored in shale formations, we have to use horizontal wells," said shale gas expert Zhang Liangwan. "So we are talking about a well with a right angle and placing it deep down," he said.

Sinopec failed to extract any shale gas from its Hubei project, but the company began to accumulate experience from the process.

"The well that helped extract the first shale gas at Fuling relied upon American technology, but if we were to develop the industry, we had to use our own and break their monopoly," said Yang Guosheng, SJOSC general manager.

After a series of trial and errors, the team gradually took control of the drilling and began to develop their own techniques by using a geological positioning technology, known as LWD, in the drill bit, which really sped up the whole process.

They also developed equipment that fractured the formations around the horizontal well, allowing gas to flow through safely.

Within just three years, the firm has secured 24 national invention patents, with some key technology such as a down-hole bridge plug even exported to North America.

"We exported 6,000 of our plugs to North America last year," said SJOSC Party secretary He Kaiping.

Despite the breakthroughs, there is still room for improvement in the industry, with total shale gas output accounting for less than 1 percent of natural gas production, while that number stands at 35 percent in the United States.

"The efforts we are making in the industry will help China adjust its energy structure and solve many problems caused by coal burning, such as smog," He said.

Sinopec said on Tuesday that production capacity will improve, and there were plans for a large-scale gas field with annual production of 10 billion by 2017. If that goal is hit, it could help bring down China's carbon dioxide by 12 million tonnes annually, equal to removing 8 million cars off the roads.

Kenyans basketful of expectations from Chinese in 2016
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/12-31/194310.shtml
Dec 31st 2015, 15:39

As 2015 ends, Kenyans have a basketful of expectations in the coming year from the Chinese, who have touched their lives in different sectors.

From infrastructure to technology, Kenyans expect the Chinese to continue investing in the country, and even do more projects than they did in 2015.

Bernard Mositet, a government worker, noted Tuesday that the construction of the standard gauge railway by the Chinese brought hope in his village in 2015. And for 2016, the financial officer is looking forward to rapid development.

"For me, 2016 is the year that my rural home in Sultan Hamud on the border of Makueni and Kajiado counties will be awakened. I believe the Chinese will complete the construction of the standard gauge railway on time, which passes about 300m from my parent's home," he said.

Already, indications are clear that a small train station may be located in the area as there was one under the old railway.

"I cannot envision how the railway will benefit my area. We have already benefited from sale of land to the government at a good fortune for the construction of the railway, but that is in the past. What will happen in the future with the railway is all that matters to me," he said.

Calvin Wasonga, a junior lawyer at a firm in Nairobi, said that he expects the Chinese to conclude the construction of the southern bypass in the capital. The road is a crucial artery that runs from the south of Nairobi to the northwest.

"I use the Southern by-pass every day from Langata to Mombasa road, where I work in a law firm because it is convenient and saves me time," said Wasonga.

According to the lawyer, Chinese built roads have put Kenya on the world map and are some of the best gifts China has ever given to Kenya.

"The roads have eased traffic congestion in Nairobi city, and technology used by Chinese companies to build them is fantastic. I expect them to continue building the roads in 2016," he said.

For Patricia Ameyo, a university student in Nairobi, 2016 should see more sleek smartphones come from China to Kenya.

"This is my first smartphone. I can take a selfie with it, listen to radio and record music. If Chinese companies had not brought their affordable phones to Kenya, perhaps I would never enjoy such services," she said, adding that she is looking forward to getting a new, trendy, multifunctional and affordable smartphone from China.

"The good thing is that the choice is unlimited from the Chinese --if it is not Tecno, I will go for Infinix. Lenovo or Huawei. With the affordable phones, I know that I can save my pocket money and get myself the gadget."

China's transport network prepares for tide of travellers

Dec 31st 2015, 15:39

Today marks the last day of 2015. With a three day holiday coming up, China's transport network is preparing for a tide of travellers.

Transport hubs around the country are bracing for the increase in travellers.

Beijing Capital International Airport is expecting to see nearly 610,000 trips made over three days.

Jinjiang Airport in Quanzhou, east China's Fujian Province, will be just as crowded. It's estimated passenger trips will increase about 37% from last year.

At Suifenhe Port in the northeast province of Heilongjiang, authorities are expecting more tourists from Russia, as the port is a favoured destination among Russians for affordable holiday shopping. Authorities said more passageways will be set-up in the airport to handle the influx.

Kunming airport in Yunnan province got a head start. Already in the past week, it's welcomed 27 thousand tourists, and has bilingual information desks set up all around.

And in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, security will be around the clock as travellers flood in. They'll be using a mobile platform to help manage the flow.

Reforms key for internationalization of RMB
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/12-31/194370.shtml
Dec 31st 2015, 15:39

More reforms are expected to be unveiled to accelerate the internationalization of the yuan, or the RMB, experts said Thursday.

"China has tasted the sweetness of reforms during the past year, when the RMB was admitted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) into the currency basket of the Special Drawing Rights(SDR)," said Zhang Shuyu, a researcher with the University of International Business and Economics.

The RMB's inclusion into the SDR basket came after a flurry of reforms, including the exchange rate formation mechanism and cross-border interbank payment.

"China did not stop its reform steps after the IMF's SDR inclusion of the RMB and will not relax its efforts," said Zhang, citing the central bank's moves to pilot RMB convertibility on the capital account and publish the China Foreign Exchange Trade System (CFETS) exchange rate composite index on December 11.

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) approved RMB convertibility on the capital account within a prescribed limit of 10 million U.S. dollars for the Tianjin, Guangdong and Fujian free trade zones on Dec. 11, a historic step by China to open up its capital accounts.

The move came less than two weeks after the RMB was admitted by the IMF into its SDR basket alongside the dollar, euro, pound sterling and yen on Nov. 30.

China allowed RMB convertibility on the trade accounts nearly two decades ago, but almost all capital account transactions in the mainland remain under varying degrees of control.

On Dec. 11, the central bank released the yuan exchange rate composite index measuring the currency's strength relative to a basket of other currencies to better reflect the market.

Analysts believe it will help bring about a shift in how the public and the market observe RMB exchange rate movements, as the CFETS exchange rate composite index measures the yuan's strength relative to a basket of 13 foreign currencies, including the U.S. dollar, euro and Japanese yen, weighted according to their trade volume with China.

"Compared with just one currency, a basket of currencies can better capture the competitiveness of a country's goods and services and better enable the exchange rate to adjust imports, exports, and investment activities and the balance of payments position," said the PBOC in a note.

However, valuing against a basket of currencies does not mean a peg to the basket, said the PBOC, adding that market demand and supply will also play a key role in formulating the interest rate.

The establishment of the China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on Dec. 25 in Beijing will also help the internationalization of the RMB, as it creates more possibilities for the international use of the currency, according to a report by Stcn.com, a People's Daily affiliate.

"In the future, China will unswervingly push forward financial reforms. The pace of market-oriented interest and exchange rate reforms will pick up speed," said Yang Ping, analyst with the People's Bank of China, on Wednesday.

China will seek to optimize the interest rate transmission mechanism and exchange rate formation mechanism as well as improve transparency of monetary policies, according to Yang.

A lesson of history is jointly instructed by Chinese and Japanese teachers for first-year students in Jinling High School in Nanjing City, the Capital of East China's Jiangsu Province. The lesson discussed topics related to the War of Chinese People's Resistance against Japanese Aggression and encouraged students to share their prospects of Sino-Japan relations. This marked the first time for Chinese and Japanese teachers to teach history together in Nanjing, where more than 300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians were murdered and about 20,000 women were raped after the city was captured by Japanese troops during WWII. 8 trapped miners still alive 5 days after mine collapse

Dec 30th 2015, 10:02

Rescuers have found eight survivors five days after a mine collapse in east China's Shandong Province, rescuers confirmed Wednesday.

The gypsum mine accident happened at 8 p.m. Friday in Pingyi County. At the time, 29 people were working underground. One is confirmed dead, four escaped, and seven have been rescued, so far.

Rescuers found signs of life on Wednesday morning. They have contacted the eight miners and are trying to send them provisions.

The rescue has been obstructed by the structural instability of the tunnel and falling debris. Holes have been drilled into the ground so that life detectors can be lowered into the pit.

The owner of the mine drowned himself when working with the rescue team early Sunday morning.

The cause of the accident is still to be confirmed.

Parents try to clear air for children at Beijing schools
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/12-30/194119.shtml

Some meet obstacles to installing classroom filters, while others are successful

Hu Qingming, a Beijing resident whose daughter is a primary school pupil in the capital, collected 5,000 yuan ($770) with other parents to buy an air filter for their children's classroom.

But Hu said the school refused to allow the parents to install the device.

"We had no choice but to give up the idea. Finally, we sold the filter," said the father whose daughter attends Hepingli No 9 Primary School in Dongcheng district.

The lasting air pollution in Beijing has driven increasing numbers of parents to collect money and install filters in classrooms, but many were rejected by schools. The reasons given included disapproval from the Beijing Commission of Education.

Parents like Hu could not understand the commission's stance and feared for their children's health at school, with many complaining that the commission was not taking the issue seriously.

The commission said student health is among its top concerns, and it has been working with experts, research institutes and environmental protection authorities to seek the best way to control air pollution at schools.

The efforts made include reducing outdoor activities on smoggy days and suspending classes after a red alert for pollution has been issued.

The commission said it has considered installing air filters or ventilation systems at all schools in the capital. But no progress has been made to date, as such work must avoid other possible hazards that could harm students' health.

An official from the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau, who wished to remain anonymous, said a benchmark is needed to define air quality in classrooms.

Health authorities should set up detailed standards to ascertain when the density of PM2.5 in a classroom is at a level where air quality can be considered good, the official said, adding that such standards can act as a basis for further control of air pollution in classrooms.

While parents like Hu are in the majority, others in Beijing have installed air filters in their children's classrooms.

Wang Qiang, whose 7-year-old daughter studies at the private Beijing Haidian Foreign Language Shiyan School, said his daughter's class has enjoyed clean air since a filter was bought and installed last winter.

Wang Haifeng, whose son is a fourth-grade pupil at Wulutong Primary School in Xicheng district, teamed up with other parents to install a filter in their children's class last month. "But neither installing air filters nor suspending classes is the total solution," Wang Haifeng said, adding that the government should do its best to tackle the pollution problem thoroughly.

Natural gas squeeze relieved in northern China: CNPC

A recent natural gas shortage was relieved in northern China with a shipment of liquefied natural gas, said China's largest oil and gas supplier on Tuesday.

A total of 260,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas was shipped to Tangshan in Hebei Province on Sunday and then pumped into pipelines, according to the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), but "appropriate" control measures on natural gas use will not be lifted for a while.

The shortage was caused by cold weather. Meanwhile, a shipment of imported liquefied natural gas was hindered by heavy fog, causing a shortage in north China, especially in Beijing, according to the CNPC.

Beijing has limited the amount of natural gas for heating public buildings and halted the supply to industrial enterprises since Saturday due to temporary scarcity.

The affected areas include workplaces, department stores and entertainment venues. The measures are part of a contingency plan to ensure heating of residential buildings in the winter.

Temperatures of public buildings will be strictly controlled, it said.

Property developer SOHO China informed its Beijing clients that the temperature in its office buildings will be set no higher than 14 degrees Celsius, as required by the authorities.

China box office to beat out U.S. by 2017
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/12-30/194159.shtml
Dec 30th 2015, 04:36

China's box office is expected to surpass the U.S. in 2017 to become the largest market in the world, while more Chinese movie enterprises will turn to global investments to learn and practice international industry methods, a report released by H. Brothers Research and the Institute for Cultural Industries at Beijing University on Monday predicted.

"No longer satisfied with domestic success, Chinese film companies are exploring the international market quicker than ever before," said the report.

Continued growth

If China's movie industry continues growing at the more than 30 percent rate it has been from 2005 to 2015, then China's total box office will surpass the U.S. in 2017 to become the largest box office market in the world, predicted Feng Wei, The Motion Picture Association of America's chief representative in China, at the Culture and Financial Forum in Shanghai last Wednesday.

By December 3, China's total box office reached 40 billion yuan ($6.1 billion), with 23.7 billion earned by domestic films for 59.2 percent, and 16.3 billion earned by imported movies, according to data released by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) on December 8.

According the Beijing Evening News, this box office was reached with what it called "low data": per capita annual movie attendance in China is only 1 - in South Korea it reaches 4.1 - and average attendance is only 14.95 percent, which demonstrates a large potential for China's box office to continue to grow.

Finding a way

However, while the market is growing fast, Chinese movies have been earning less overseas. The report shows that Chinese movie revenue overseas reached a peak of 3.52 billion yuan in 2010, dropping to 2 billion yuan the following year. The lowest point was reached in 2013 as exported Chinese films only earned 400 million yuan.

In a statement made last May, Luan Guozhi, the vice director of movie department of SAPPRFT, concluded that the best way for Chinese films to perform better overseas is to make films that "present the core of Chinese culture in an international way." To learn this "international way," China has signed cooperation agreements with 13 countries including the UK and South Korea. Films produced under these agreements would be able to be shown in China without taking up an import quota slot.

Investing overseas is also a way for Chinese companies to gain experience.

"Many people in the movie industry agree that investing in foreign companies may be the fastest way for Chinese enterprises to learn how these Hollywood studios produce their films for the global market," Chen Changye, the director of H. Brothers Research, told the Global Times.

According to the report, Chinese movie companies cooperated with Hollywood studios on 57 projects, including action films such as Mission Impossible 5 and animated films like Blazing Samurai. By financially investing in overseas studios, Chinese companies can also share in the global revenue from these studios and can explore derivatives products such as theme parks because they would have partial ownership of overseas IPs.

"Things are just getting started. China's studios will soon bring more Chinese stories to the world in the future," concluded Chen.

SW China's Sichuan Province shrouded in unusual bout of pollution

Beijing issued another alert for heavy air pollution on Monday evening, just two days after lifting the previous one. The city is forecast to welcome the New Year on Friday under another wave of heavy smog, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.

According to readings from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center's 12 monitoring sites in the city's urban area, at 4 pm on Tuesday, the concentration of PM2.5 - airborne particulate matter under 2.5 micrometers in size - surpassed 200 micrograms per cubic meter.

Smog is also shrouding other cities in northern China, including Beijing's neighbor Tianjin. The coastal city will see two bouts of smog this week, one lasting two and a half days and the other four days, the Xinhua News Agency reported Monday.

The pains of air pollution are even being shared by Southwest China's Sichuan Province. Air pollution in the province will continue and even worsen over the next three days, Luo Bin, deputy head of Sichuan Environmental Monitoring Center, told the China News Service (CNS) on Monday.

Pollutant accumulation will continue on the heels of a weak cold front that has contributed to the current heavy air pollution in the Sichuan Basin, Luo explained.

Ma Xuekuan, chief weather forecaster with China's National Meteorological Center, told the CNS on Monday that Beijing has seen four waves of heavy smog this winter, twice the number seen over the same period in recent years.

Aside from pollutant emissions, Ma said unfavorable weather conditions such as weak cold fronts, stable atmospheric stratification and high humidity, can also cause smog.

When asked whether shelterbelt forestation projects in Northwest, North and Northeast China might contribute to smog by lowering wind speeds, Zhang Jianlong, head of the State Forestry Administration, denied that forestation changes atmospheric circulation because it only lowers surface wind speeds, as quoted by news site chinanews.com.

Beijing issued its second air pollution red alert of the month as a bout of heavy smog blanketed the capital from December 19 to 22.

The capital's municipal government issued a notice on Monday that aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions by extending the scope of regulations on carbon-emitting companies and governmental agencies, the Beijing Daily reported on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, North China experienced a natural gas shortage that was relieved Tuesday after more than 260,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas were shipped to Tangshan, Hebei Province, Xinhua reported on Tuesday.

However, the gas was not able to be unloaded due to heavy fog and wind.

The Ice Kingdom-The Nutcracker will be unveiled at the Shanghai Expo site on Jan 1, 2016 to welcome children and adults to encounter snow and ice, and play in the frozen world without having to fly further north.

The 3000-square-meter indoor theme park is introduced by the experienced organizer, International Special Attractions from the US to recreate the classic fairy tale of The Nutcracker and The Mouseking for local residents to have fun in the cold winter.

It also is the first time that the company has brought the popular ice kingdom with dedicated ice sculptures from the US to China, which have been displayed all over the US for the past 15 years.

There are different storylines in each section, which also include certain Chinese elements such an ice panda.

In addition to the ice displays of characters from fairy tales, there is an ice slide, a snow playground, a bumper car on the ice and the curling bowling for both adults and children to feel the frozen and snowy winter with their hands.

The theme park will be open to the public from Jan 1 to March 6, which will offer a unique fairytale ice kingdom for Chinese families.

(ECNS) -- A passenger on a Xiamen Airlines flight attempted to commit suicide in the plane's lavatory on Sunday night, the Beijing News reported on Tuesday.

The airline said that it would not prosecute the man.

Crew members on flight MF8362 from Haikou in Hainan Province to Xiamen in Fujian Province reportedly heard loud noises coming from the lavatory. That sound was a male passenger hitting his head repeatedly against the washbasin.

The crew cared for the injured man before handing him off to medical staff after the plane landed.

According to Xiamen Airlines, the passenger, who was flying with his family, was suffering from depression.

The airline denied a report that the passenger tried to commit suicide with plastic cutlery.

"There was no plastic cutlery on flight MF8362, because no meal was served after the plane took off," the company said in a statement.

"Even though the incident happened in the lavatory, the passenger's behavior caused inconvenience to other passengers on the plane," said Zhang Qihuai, who works for the Air and Space Law Research Center at the China University of Political Science and Law.

Security workers have a responsibility to monitor passenger behavior, Zhang said.

"People who are going through drug withdrawal, are out of control, or are acting odd under the influence of drugs should be banned from boarding," he added.

Astro Air planning commuter flights to major destinations

A helicopter commuter service between Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, three major business cities in Guangdong province, will make its maiden flight on Thursday, the first of its kind on the Chinese mainland.

It will take only half an hour to make a trip between two of the cities, one-fifth of the travel time by other means of transportation, according to Zhu Zilin, chief of the helicopter service team at Astro Air Co Ltd, a privately owned general aviation company based in Shenzhen.

The takeoff and landing points are located in the CBD areas of Guangzhou and Shenzhen and in the Hengqin New Area of Zhuhai, which is part of the China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and adjacent to Macao.

"The airborne taxi service has been launched to meet the growing need for efficient, point-to-point business travel as regional economic exchanges within the Pearl River Delta and between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao get closer after the Guangdong free trade zone was established," Zhu said.

A single trip ticket is priced at 4,999 yuan ($770), and Zhu said that his company has noticed a big market and strong enough consuming power in the prosperous Pearl River Delta.

Caesar Wong, a partner of Deloitte China and an adviser for China's free trade zones, welcomed the helicopter commuter service. His office is in the building where the service's flights will take off and land in Guangzhou's Zhujiang New Town.

"I used to travel to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai within one day, but it was really difficult to do so by car, considering the traffic jams," Wong said.

"Time is money, and I would like to spend money on the helicopter service if it is an urgent, important meeting."

He added that the inter-city helicopter service meets the need of China's vigorous regional economic development in recent years.

Astro Air is planning to expand the helicopter service to other cities in Guangdong province including Dongguan, Foshan, Huizhou and Jiangmen, and launch such services between a city's CBD and its airport, according to Nanfang Daily.

Zhu said that his company will bring the inter-city helicopter service to the Yangtze River Delta, where Shanghai and Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces are located, in the second half of 2016 and later to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.

"Business trips by helicopter are common in overseas metropolises such as New York, Tokyo and Sydney. As China's economy develops, more options for transportation should be provided to meet the needs of different types of travelers," Zhu said.

China's policymakers are mulling loosening restrictions on general aircraft, ranging from helicopters to private jets, from flying in low-altitude airspace below 1,000 meters.

However, general aviation companies still need to go through a complicated approval process to enter the low-flying commuter services market and not many real estate developers had the foresight to provide suitable rooftop takeoff and landing points, according to Zhu.

Real estate and entertainment giant Dalian Wanda Group Corp Ltd is planning to bring more big-ticket sports events to China and has set up a global sports headquarters in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, for the purpose.

The company said in a statement that it has signed a deal with the local government for the new Wanda Sports building in Huadu, a suburban district in Guangzhou. It is being set up with registered capital of about 1 billion yuan ($154.1 million).

"We are here because of the city's geographic advantages and rich sports heritage," said Wang Jianlin, chairman of Wanda.

According to Wang, the group plans to bring at least two top global sports events every year to Guangzhou over the next three years. Wanda conducts more than 20 sports events and has 25 offices in 13 countries and regions.

"Wanda Sports is looking to be the first company in the world to have $10 billion in sports-related investments," Wang said after signing an agreement with Guangzhou Mayor Chen Jianhua on Monday.

Wanda has become the world's largest company in the sports industry through a series of global acquisitions, the company said. It paid 1.05 billion euros ($1.15 billion) for Infront Sports and Media, a leading sports marketing group, in February, and bought the World Triathlon Corp for 650 million euros, after taking a 20 percent stake in the La Liga club Atletico Madrid for 44.98 million euros.

Earlier, Wanda said it would make more acquisitions in the sports sector, as the company has outlined a strategic plan to make sports one of its pillar industries for long-term growth.

Xie Liang, a veteran sports commentator with Radio Guangdong, said the new Wanda headquarters in Guangzhou would play a significant role in boosting China's sports industry.

"With Wanda becoming the world's largest sports industry company, several leading sports events will be held in China," said Xie.

China outlined a plan to speed up development of the sports industry in October 2014, with the industrial value estimated to surpass 5 trillion yuan ($775 billion) by 2025.

"The Guangzhou headquarters will also help strengthen the city's leading position in some top sports such as soccer," said Xie.

Like Wanda, several large companies like Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd and video content provider LeTV Holdings Co Ltd have announced plans to enter the sports industry.

Alibaba announced in September it was setting up a new unit, Ali Sports, to tap into China's sports market and to use digital technology to transform the entire industry chain.

An old housing area in downtown Shanghai, built between the 1950s and the 1960s for the industrial workers, has recently been given an entirely new look after whitewashing and decorating. The renovation project was jointly sponsored and undertaken by the Siping district government and Tongji University's College of Design and Innovation. In the past three months, designers, artists and students have worked hard and given free rein to their imagination, intelligence and abilities in bringing the project to a successful conclusion. The cast of "Mr. Six," a drama directed by Guan Hu attended a press conference today to promote the film which started its national release on Thursday last week.

Famous mainland director Feng Xiaogang plays the leading role on the film as a 50-something street punk Mr. Six who has reigned over the Beijing streets as the neighborhood kingpin for many years.

But when his own son gets in trouble, he realizes that he no longer holds any ground in the street scene.

Feng's acting in the film has recently won him the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor.

"It is a rare chance for me to star in a film with such a good script," said Feng.

The film based on director Guan's childhood memories and experiences is also a sentimental record of the passing days and old life styles in Beijing. Lives in the Beijing Hutongs (old lanes) are depicted in the film.

New Year's Eve revelers in Shanghai will not have to make the long trek back home this year after the Metro operators yesterday decided to run Lines 1, 2 and 8 well past midnight.

The three busiest lines in the city will be in service for extra 80 minutes on December 31 to ferry revelers home.

Trains in both directions will ply every 10 minutes during the extended hours. Commuters can make transfers at the People's Square Station.

However, the eastern section of Line 2 between Guanglan Road Station and Pudong International Airport will only run during the normal service hours.

The last trains on Line 1 will leave the two terminal stations ― Fujin Road and Xinzhuang ― at 11:50pm and 11:52pm, respectively, on December 31.

On Line 2, the last trains from Xujingdong and Guanglan Road stations are both scheduled for 12:05am.

Trains from Shendu Highway and Shiguang Road stations on Line 8 will leave at 11:50pm.

This year, Shanghai has cut down on large-scale New Year celebrations ― the only big one being at Xintiandi, which will be limited to 4,800 participants.

But there are no restrictions on downtown shopping centers which usually stay open till very late in the night.

Some temples and scenic spots also attract late night visitors.

Shopping centers like the No. 1 Yaohan Department Store in Pudong, and the Shanghai New World Department Store on Nanjing Road E. will hold overnight promotional activities.

The Longhua Temple in Xuhui District will organize the annual bell ringing activity to welcome the New Year.

The Bund and Lujiazui also tends to attract revelers.

A total of 72 public buses that run close to some Metro stations will also extend their operational time on New Year's Eve. Some of the bus numbers are 13, 21, 23, 37, 123, 139, 923, 934.

The taxi companies have also been told to encourage drivers to ply in the night, especially at major commercial centers around the city.

The traffic law enforcement team will be out in full force at airports, railway stations, as well as at transport hubs like the People's Square and Xujiahui to crack down against illegal private cars looking for business, authorities said.
