Chestnuts from South Korea were confiscated from a cruise-ship passenger at a seaport in Yantai, Shandong Province, when it was discovered that they carried larvae from pests that would be potentially devastating to local ecosystems.

Local Yantai inspection and quarantine officials discovered live larvae from the Chestnut Weevil and Oriental Fruit Moth in a batch of chestnuts a traveler visiting China brought from South Korea a few days ago. Both species of insect are field pests that can harm chestnut and hazelnut harvests.

The chestnuts were subsequently sealed and burned. Yantai Inspection and Quarantine Bureau authorities note that this is the first time live Chestnut Weevil larvae have been encountered on a passenger vessel. The cruise-ship was stopped in Yantai while heading for its final destination of Qingdao.

Yantai customs authorities report that dozens of illegal animal and plant products have been seized at local airports and seaports since the start of this year. According to the Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, these products could have caused several million yuan in economic losses had they gotten into China.

Experts warn that, since the 1980s, the number of invasive species disrupting local ecosystems has increased, with 50 new species entering the country in just the last decade. They added that 20 of these alien species have caused ecological disasters spanning large areas in China.
