A senior official from China's Ministry of Agriculture says the possibilities of an avian flu outbreak occurring are low, judging from recent laboratory tests.

Ma Aiguo, director general of Bureau for Quality and Safety Supervision on Agro-products, under the Ministry of Agriculture made the statement at a news conference held by the State Council Information Office on Thursday.

Two new cases of human H7N9 were reported Thursday in south China's Guangdong Province. So far, Guangdong has confirmed 18 human H7N9 cases since August and two of the infected have died.

East China's Zhejiang Province and Fujian Province also reported one new case each on Thursday.

The official says that avian influenza virus bears poor viability. He suggests that the public buy poultry products from regular channels as opposed to unregulated sellers and cook them properly; sick and dead poultry should be avoided altogether.
