Last week Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre premiered its latest production, The Good Person of Szechuan. Featuring as part of the company's international exchange program, the production is guided by Chinese theatre superstar Meng Jinghui. With a cast of Australian actors, Meng's version of the Bertolt Brecht play follows the character Shen Te, played by burlesque queen Moira Finucane, as she struggles to balance new found wealth with the moral code she once held dear. It's a strong statement on how a society's economic structure can influence its civil society.
"I think everyone, whether they are a Chinese audience or Australian audience, should all reflect on the era they are living," says Meng.
"People need to think about justice, social resources, and their contribution to the society etc. I feel that ethics and people's relations in daily life are the things everyone should think about.
Not only Chinese people, but people living in every corner of the world, should all think about these issues, big picture social and political issues."
The play is on at Malthouse Theatre until July 20 and is scheduled to tour to China as part of the Shanghai International Arts Festival and the Beijing International Theatre Festival in October.
