Chinese companies are increasingly involved in drafting international standards for wireless and smart devices, due to their rising global presence and the unique demand of the Chinese market.

China boasts several multinational giants such as China Mobile and Huawei Technologies and the country has a unique requirement for updated standards, Seth Newberry, general manager of Open Mobile Alliance, said yesterday.

Li Kepeng, senior standard specialist at Huawei, a key member of OMA, said: "Chinese companies proposed more standards and have increased influence in global industry alliances like OMA."

OMA, which makes standards covering application interface, Bluetooth and location for several billion smart devices globally, is holding its annual meeting in Shanghai.

OMA is in talks with a research unit of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and a national center for the Internet of Things on next-generation telecommunications standards, said OMA, which also includes Microsoft Corp and Samsung Electronics.
