Beijing ranks No. 15 of world cities with the worst traffic in 2014, according to the global annual Traffic Index ranking just released by Tomtom.com, a navigation and mapping product company based in the Netherlands that monitors global road congestion.
Twenty-one cities on the Chinese mainland are among the top 100 cities with the world's worst traffic, with Chongqing and Tianjin ranking No. 12 and No. 14, respectively.
Taipei ranks even higher at No. 11.
Based on full-year data for 2014, Beijing is with a 37-percent congestion level, which means it takes the average driver 37 percent longer to cover the same distance than it would on a roadway that is not congested.
According to the report, Beijing is also one of the rare cities where traffic is worse on highways than on inner-city roadways, with a highway congestion level at 43 percent, and non-highway levels at 35 percent. Only 11 cities on the 218-city list have longer delays on highways than on non-highways.
Istanbul, Turkey, with a 58 percent congestion level, ranks No. 1 on the list.
Tomtom's charts of traffic delays also shows that Monday mornings and Friday evenings are the most congested time periods globally. Monday mornings hit a congestion level of 67 percent, while Friday evenings surge to a whopping 83-percent peak in congestion.
