Beijing Week celebrates Marco Polo's new Silk Road at Expo Milano 2015
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-31/167450.shtml
May 31st 2015, 00:04
What stage could have been better than the world stage at Expo Milano 2015 to celebrate the cultural exchange between the East and West and preaching traditional Chinese values of creating a harmonious world on a new Silk Road?
The ballet drama Marco Polo, co-produced by National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and Song and Dance Troupe of PLA General Political Department, was performed for the first time outside China on Saturday to mark the opening of the Beijing Week at the Italian world exposition.
"Italian traveler Marco Polo marveled at Chinese culture along the Silk Road and we are doing the same along the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road," NCPA Vice President Li Zhixiang told Xinhua shortly before the performance kicked off at the Expo's auditorium.
The "Belt and Road" initiatives were introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping to boost infrastructure building, financial cooperation and cultural exchanges between Asia and Europe.
"Dance is a language understood by everybody in the world and we are confident that ballet drama Marco Polo will achieve remarkable success among the international audience," Li went on saying.
The show is the story about an Italian young man of the modern time who is reading "Travels of Marco Polo" in Venice and is absorbed in the oriental legends until he dreams himself to be Marco Polo and travels into ancient China.
"We have wanted to show how the relations between the Eastern and Western civilizations started many centuries ago," Chief Director of the show Chen Weiya said. Universal love and China's pursuit for harmony and peace are central concepts in the ballet drama, he underlined.
Every piece of art, Chen noted, is rooted in real life, thus it is the most natural thing to imagine that Marco Polo, who spent many years working in the court of Kublai Khan, Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1271-1368 ), had the experience of falling in love with a Chinese beauty.
The ballet drama features a princess who comes to Marco Polo with a wave of love and respect in her heart aroused by his courage and justice. The common belief in peace shortens the distance between the two, and love grows in their hearts, Chen, who was also the deputy chief director of the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, explained to Xinhua.
The conflict of the Marco Polo ballet drama reaches its climax when it comes to the choice between war and peace, and China's pursuit for harmony shines through the decision of the two lovers who sacrifice their own happiness for the peace in the world.
Zhang Qianyi, composer of the show's soundtrack and President of the Song and Dance Troupe of PLA General Political Department, told Xinhua that the music of the ballet drama is a combination of western music, court music of the Yuan dynasty, ethic music of the Mongol and folk music of southern China.
In fact exchanges between the East and the West rise again in the show's epilogue, when it is modern time again in the house of Marco Polo in Venice, and in the morning the sun rises to lighten a fresh journey to the East along a new Silk Road.

Lock-up shares worth nearly 46.7 billion yuan (7.6 billion U.S. dollars) will become eligible for trade on China's stock market in the coming week.
More than 4.1 billion shares from 18 companies will become tradable on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from Monday to Friday, according to data compiled by market intelligence provider Tonghuashun.
Guanghui Energy Co., a Xinjiang-based energy company, will see the unlocking of nearly 2.2 billion non-tradable shares on Wednesday, the largest volume to be released next week.
Under China's market rules, major shareholders of non-tradable stocks are subject to one or two years of lock-up before they are permitted to trade the shares.
The market value of these shares due next week shrank substantially from 58.1 billion yuan of stocks unlocked this week. New shares will put some downward pressure on the market due to the increase in stock supply.
The upcoming stocks will hit the market after a 6.5-percent plunge on Thursday rattled investors in Chinese shares, which have realized remarkable performance since the last quarter of 2014.

WB cooperates with Chinese firm to develop low-cost houses in Africa
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/05-31/167453.shtml
May 31st 2015, 00:20
The World Bank's private sector arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), on Friday inked a new partnership with Chinese construction and engineering company to develop low-cost houses in three African countries.
IFC and CITIC Construction Co., Ltd will set up a joint venture and inject 300 million U.S. dollars to develop 30,000 homes in Kenya, Rwanda and Nigeria in the next five years.
"As Sub-Saharan Africa becomes more urbanized, the private sector can help governments meet the critical demand for shelter," IFC director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Oumar Seydi told a news conference in Nairobi.
Seydi added the joint venture with Chinese construction firm will transform housing market across Sub-Saharan Africa by providing high quality, affordable homes, creating jobs and demonstrating the viability of the sector to local developers.
Construction Chairwoman Hong Bo said her company has a proven track record in the implementation of large scale housing schemes in Africa.
"CITIC will take advantage of our engineering experience and delivery capability to develop more affordable houses for Africa through the platform with IFC," she said, adding that new housing units will be built in accordance with IFC's green building standards.
The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) said Africa is currently the most urbanizing continent with 40,000 people streaming into cities daily, looking for job opportunities, raising a housing crisis in many African cities.
Seydi emphasized that pro-poor investments are crucial to promote access to cheaper and high quality houses for the burgeoning urban population across Sub-Saharan Africa.
"IFC will partner with financial institutions to deliver affordable homes for middle income earners in African cities. A home is a source of pride and security for any individual," Seydi said, adding that IFC will lend technical assistance to ensure new housing units meet environmental standards.
IFC settled for the Chinese company to develop low cost houses in Africa owing to its engineering prowess, global reach and grasp of market dynamics. Seydi added IFC shares identical social and ecological values with the Chinese construction firm.
A joint IFC-CITIC venture will not only revitalize Africa's housing market but also unleash job opportunities for the youth.

China is considering the launch of a flight link with Bahamas, said Li Jiaxiang, director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, on Saturday.
Li made the remarks after China and Bahamas signed two documents on civil aviation cooperation, saying that China will encourage domestic airlines to open routes to the tourist resort.
More Chinese are choosing to visit Bahamas, where they can stay for 30 days without visa, but there are no domestic carriers operating China-Bahamas service.
"The documents will lay a legal foundation for code-sharing of airlines and direct air route between China and Bahamas," said Li, adding that a future flight will facilitate economic cooperation and people-to-people exchange.

Chinese books become more popular in New York libraries
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-30/167437.shtml
May 30th 2015, 03:00
A 69-year-old Flushing resident, Huiming Pang, came to Flushing's Queens Library early Friday morning. Within thirty minutes of the door opening, she had already picked five books to read at the table.
"The Chinese books here have a large quantity as well as a wide variety," Pang said. "I worked in the clothing profession, so I even found many books here are about clothes and fashion in Chinese."
Pang is a Chinese immigrant who came to the United States 18 years ago, and it was at that time that she started to visit Queens Library. During these years, she has witnessed the rebuilding of the library and its development.
She found that the number of Chinese books and electronic products about China have been increasing quickly.
Paul Qiu, associate library manager of Queens Library at Flushing, told Xinhua that as the number of Chinese Americans is increasing, they have added more Chinese books to their collection.
"The library allocates resources to meet the demand of its residents, so it's easy to imagine that Chinese books are becoming more popular here," he said.
Qiu said New York's Queens library system has a total of 62 branches, among which over ten libraries have participated in the "Ni Hao" program, which collects Chinese books for the library.
As a newly emerged Chinatown in Queens, Flushing has become the branch of the Queens libraries which boasts the largest number of Chinese books.
From May 27 to 29, China has been invited for the first time ever as the Guest of Honor country at Bookexpo America, which was held in New York. At the ceremony, the Chinese side donated 1,000 books each to the three public libraries in New York.
Bridget Quinn-Carey, interim president and CEO of Queens Library, said they were thrilled to receive the donation.
"Right now we have hundreds of thousands of Chinese books," she said. "We collect about 25 languages, but Chinese-language books represent a huge percentage of our international language materials, because there's such a big demand for them."
"We actually spend about a hundred thousand dollars a year on Chinese language materials," she said. "We got quite a number of Chinese books every year. They have been popular for a number of years."
As one of the three library systems serving New York City, and the fifth largest public library system in the United States, the Brooklyn Public Library is the public library system of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.
Frank Xu, manager of the Languages and Literature Division of Brooklyn Public Library, told Xinhua that it's the same situation with Queens Library -- the number of readers who come to their library looking for Chinese books has also increased.
He said this was probably due to two reasons. Firstly, more Chinese immigrants are moving to Brooklyn. Secondly, the new residents of different ethnic groups moving there have a relatively higher education background.
"They ask for more Chinese books, on topics of Chinese economy, philosophy, culture, music and so on," he said.
"In addition to the Chinese immigrants, more Americans are becoming interested in China. They like to read about travel in China, learning Chinese and Chinese philosophy, as well as some novels written by contemporary Chinese authors which have been translated into English," Xu said.

New Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged stronger ties with China, after a meeting with the Chinese government's representative at his inauguration ceremony held on Friday in the capital, Abuja.
After his inauguration, Buhari held talks with Han Changfu, Chinese President Xi Jinping's Special Envoy and Minister of Agriculture, with the two sides agreeing to further enhance their win-win cooperation.
"We held talks and reached consensus on issues of bilateral ties and those of shared interests," Han told reporters in Abuja.
Han said the Chinese government is willing to work together with Nigeria's new government and the leadership of President Buhari for further growth of bilateral relations.
Officials from the two countries also held a meeting over cooperation in infrastructure, electricity and agriculture -- areas where Buhari expects more fruitful cooperation.
Trade between China and Nigeria hit 18.1 billion U.S dollars last year, and Nigeria is China's second-largest export market in Africa.

New Nigerian president pledges stronger ties with China
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-30/167438.shtml
May 30th 2015, 03:01

Chinese carmaker partners with Uber to make headway in U.S. auto market

Uber driver Glen Snower loves his BYD Auto e6. As a driver for the American-based taxi service, he decided to work using an electric vehicle.
"I haven't been to a gas station in a year, except to get some water and some gum, and right now the gas prices are going up again, and it just puts more money in my pocket and less pollution in the air," he told Xinhua.
Uber, an American international transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, California, lets drivers use their personal cars to drive around customers, but they've also partnered with GreenWheels, a Chicago-based eco-friendly automotive company to lend the BYD Auto e6 to drivers to use as a taxi.
Of course, riders want to use a taxi that is comfortable. Snower told Xinhua that the e6 meets that requirement: "It's full- size, very comfortable. It's a workhorse, it's got a lot of room in the back, a great entrance for people getting in and out, good trunk space, and dependable," he said.
The e6, a plug-in electric vehicle, needs to be charged between uses. Snower says that he takes lunch or dinner breaks while charging his e6, which he says gets about 200 miles (322 kilometers) per charge.
Thankfully, finding charging stations in Chicago isn't a challenge, according to Uber. "GreenWheels and BYD have both been investing in and building out (electric vehicle) infrastructure in Chicago, and the partnership was a natural fit for this pilot," Uber spokesperson Lauren Altmin told Xinhua.
Altmin says that Uber set up an informational session for electric vehicles and that dozens showed up. "More people were interested because electric vehicles are not things you see on the streets typically, and when you do, people notice, especially in the states," she said. "This is something people, especially in Chicago are interested in hearing about."
As BYD Auto has already moved into the U.S. fleet market with both its e6 and electric bus. Volvo, owned by Zhejiang Geely, a Chinese multinational automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Hangzhou, is preparing to ship the first-ever China-made vehicle targeted at the American consumer, the Volvo S60. Additionally, Guangzhou Automobile Group debuted the GS4 compact SUV at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, saying they would aim to make 2017 their first year of selling cars in the United States.

Chinese envoy urges enhanced cooperation to stop flow of foreign terrorist fighters
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-30/167436.shtml

A Chinese envoy to the UN Friday urged enhanced international cooperation to stop and prevent the increasing flow of foreign terrorist fighters.
"Regional conflicts have provided fertile soil for terrorists and extremists organizations. The organizational structure of these groups have become more decentralized, with ever increasing new means of conducting terrorist activities," Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN told a UN Security Council meeting.
He said that the increasing transnational flow of foreign terrorist fighters has become "a new challenge" to the international counter-terrorism endeavors, which has exacerbated the intensity of regional conflict, seriously threatened the security, stability of countries of source, transit and destination.
According to UN, there are now over 25,000 foreign terrorist fighters from over 100 countries who have traveled to join or fight for terrorist entities associated with Al-Qaida, the Islamic State (IS), and Al-Nusrah Front (ANF).
To prevent and stop the flow of foreign terrorist fighters, Liu called for the strengthening of international cooperation through multilateral and bilateral mechanisms.
"We should fully leverage the advantages of the UN and relevant international organizations and establish the counter-terrorism data bases as soon as possible to share intelligence resources," Liu said.
The envoy also called for enhancement of border control and cooperation in law enforcement and financial regulations.
Liu also urged the international community to fight resolutely against the utilization of the Internet to engage terrorism, such as spreading extreme ideology, recruiting, plotting terrorism activities and raising funds.
"It is necessary to formulate as soon as possible a global code of conduct for business in this area," said he.
Liu warned against the back-flow of the terrorist fighters and urged coordination among the international community and effective response to this problem.
He called on the international community to advocate the spirit of inter-civilization dialogue characterized by mutual respect, openness and tolerance.
Liu said China will continue to strictly implement relevant Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism, intensity its efforts to fight terrorism according to law, ensure accountability of violent and terrorist crimes.
"China will continue to take an active part in and push forward counter-terrorism cooperation on bilateral and multilateral levels and provide developing countries with capacity-building and material assistance," said he.

China new rules show mercy to "kin concealment" of illegal gains
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-30/167440.shtml
May 30th 2015, 03:05
China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Friday issued a judicial interpretation showing leniency to people who conceal their relatives' criminal proceeds.
According to the new rules, first-time offenders found to have hidden illegal gains for members of their immediate family shall be exempt from criminal punishment as long as they confess and hand over the money.
The rules are in accord with Chinese social ethics and should be easily accepted by the public, said an unidentified judge with the SPC, adding better effect of law enforcement can be expected.
In ancient China, the principle of "kin concealment" prevailed, banning people from making accusations against their relatives or testifying against them.
The rules which go into effect on June 1, apply to illegal gains of 3,000 (490 U.S. dollars) to 10,000 yuan.

Beijing swifts' epic, non-stop migration revealed
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-29/167386.shtml
May 29th 2015, 06:03
All Chinese kids know the rhyme "Little Swifts", about migratory swifts' seasonal arrival in Beijing, but parents have never been able to answer the common question of where the birds have flown from. Until now.
New research has suggested that Beijing swifts, born in the capital in the eaves of old imperial palaces, travel more than 13,000 km without touching ground to winter in southern Africa before returning the following spring.
A group of Chinese, British, Swedish and Belgian ornithologists and bird lovers fitted tracking devices to dozens of the birds last May. So loyal are swifts to their nesting sites that the researchers were able to retrieve 13 of the devices on Sunday.
Data retrieved from them showed the birds headed northwest into Mongolia, then south through Iran and central Arabia into tropical Africa, before spending three months of the winter in Namibia and the Western Cape.
Swifts are among the fastest animals on the planet -- capable of flying at speeds of more than 110 km per hour. They spend almost all their lives in the air and they can feed, drink, mate and sleep on the wing, landing only to breed. As such, they are very difficult to study, confounding ornithologists speculating about their flight paths.
The typical life span of a swift is seven years, "which means the bird in its lifetime will cover a migration distance greater than 182,000 km, about half of the distance from the Earth to the Moon," said Terry Townshend, one of the researchers and founder of the Birding Beijing NGO.
"Swifts have a special place in the hearts of Beijingers," said Fu Jianping, president of the China Birdwatching Society. "Their screaming flights at dusk around many of our major landmarks are one of the most enchanting features of our summer."
The birds like to nest high above the ground. While many modern skyscrapers are deliberately designed not to accommodate birds, the flat surfaces of Beijing's gatehouses and the eaves of imperial pavilions are perfect for swifts. They can usually be found in the Forbidden City, the Lama Temple and the Summer Palace from mid-April to July.
While swifts have been visitors to Beijing for hundreds of years, their numbers in the city have declined dramatically in the past few decades. A 2000-2002 study by Zhang Zhengwang, professor of zoology at Beijing Normal University, found only 3,000 swifts in Beijing.
"The main reason behind the decline is that their breeding sites have been greatly reduced," Zhang said, noting that many gatehouses were torn down to make way for skyscrapers and wider roads. People have also strung nets on many old buildings to limit corrosion from bird droppings.
Conservationists are hopeful that understanding more about the birds' habits will help in their protection. "It will allow scientists to monitor these areas and identify actual and potential threats to the birds' population," said Townshend.
"In Beijing, we can begin to have conversations with developers to explore whether we can make new buildings more swift-friendly by including swift nesting places in the design," he added.

Hungary's central bank invests in Chinese gov't bonds

The Hungarian National Bank has made the first step to invest in Chinese government bonds, according to a statement released by the bank on its website on Thursday.
The first phase of the investment was conducted through an indirect technique in cooperation with the BIS (Bank for International Settlements, Basel) in May 2015, the bank said, adding that "the investment does in no way jeopardize reserve adequacy, which is still regarded to be high."
Taking into consideration the growing significance of China in the global economy, the Renminbi's more pronounced role in the international monetary system, a decision was made to invest a small part of the foreign exchange reserves in Chinese government securities, the bank said.
The bank said that a significant factor in the decision was China's high credit rating. The investment in Chinese government securities is in line with the current international trends of foreign reserve management, as more and more central banks in both EU and non-EU countries are investing in China, the bank added.
When announcing its Renminbi Program on Feb. 19, 2015, the bank stated its intention to explore the opportunity of setting up a Renminbi denominated foreign reserve portfolio.

'Beijing Moving Image Exhibition' at CAFA
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-29/167387.shtml
May 29th 2015, 06:06
Starting on Wednesday to June 21, the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing and its German partner the Hessen State University of Art and Design are holding an exhibition titled Moving in Time: B3 + Beijing Moving Image Exhibition, including artworks from 60 artists that were selected from over 120 applicants.
Among the presented works, juries will further select 10 artworks that will head to Frankfurt to join the B3 Biennial of the Moving Image in October. The theme of this year's Biennial will be "Expanded Senses," which looks to explore "the future of storytelling in the digital era."
Jury members include Bernd Kracke, founder of the B3 Biennial; Annita Beckers, curator of the B3 Biennial; and three CAFA members, Fan Di'an, president of the CAFA; Wang Huangsheng, director of the CAFA Art Museum; and Song Xiewei, deputy director of School of Design at CAFA.
During a press conference for the exhibition, Su Xinping, the deputy president of the CAFA, said that the moving image is the most direct and vivid form of art in this era. For this reason, international communication and cooperation is important to share the most cutting edge technology and designs.
Emphasizing this idea of sharing, one of the works at the exhibition is called Everyone is a Curator, a crowd-funding project that invites people to get involved in the exhibition and release their own creative potential.
Another exhibit, the Toshow: 100,000 Cat Project is a social media doodle project in which the public can submit their drawings of cats through social media platform WeChat and then have them displayed as part of the exhibit.
The interaction doesn't stop there. As visitors pass by a long wall where the doodles are displayed, they are able to use provided devices to leave comments about what they think about the pictures.
The exhibition also includes sound performances, film screenings, video games as well as other fun digital works for visitors to see and experience.

Verismo opera 'Andrea Chenier' presents the French Revolution on stage
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-29/167385.shtml
May 29th 2015, 05:59
A highlight of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Opera Festival, Giordano Umberto's Andrea Chenier, a co-production between the NCPA, The Royal Opera House in London and the San Francisco Opera, is being held at the NCPA from Thursday to Sunday.
Originally premiering in London in January, the co-produced opera features a love triangle set against the French Revolution that leads to tragedy. During a time when nobles still hold balls as the country falls apart around them, the poet Andrea Chenier is invited to one of these parties to demonstrate his patriotic passion to the nation. After writing an ode at the request of the Contessa's daughter, Maddalena, Chenier becomes the object of Maddalena's obsession. However before their relationship can progress the starving and struggling poor storm the house. Seeing the people finally rise up against the aristocracy, the Contessa's servant Gerard joins the revolution to fight against the nobility he served for so long and secretly resented. As the Revolution continues to expand, Chenier chooses to stay in his motherland, while Maddalena, who lost her family and lives in constant danger, finds him and becomes his lover. However Gerard's affection for Maddalena and jealousy of Chenier leads him to accuse Chenier as a traitor to the country.
The real life poet Andre Chenier, who was active during the French Revolution, was the basis for the character in the opera. Born in Constantinople in 1762, he was sent to the gallows when he was only 32 for writing poetry against Maximilien Robespierre (1758-1794). Meanwhile, the character of Gerard is partly based on Jean-Lambert Tallien, a leader of the Revolution.
Andrea Chenier is one of the two most frequently presented works composed by Umberto Giordano (1867-1948), the other being Fedora, and is usually held at the same level of Puccini's La boheme and Cavalleria rusticana. However, since it is very difficult for a tenor to perfectly capture both the lyricism of a poet and the power of a revolutionary, the opera is not as widely performed as the others.
Despite the difficulty the opera presents, Maddalena actress Sun Xiuwei was a highlight showing a brave noble girl who eventually grows up after experiencing a family tragedy and war. The aria "Nemico del la patria" and "Un di all' azzurro spaz" were my personal favorites from the opera.
Another highlight really stood out for me. In the first act, when two ballet dancers play a shepherd couple, the choir melody was both elegant and beautiful. Talking about her son who died in the war, she reveals the pride she feels that her little grandson is now old enough to fight and die for her country. Little details like this help fill the opera with little bright lights of humanity.
Costume design for the opera is also incredibly well done. Strictly following the principles of verism, designer Jenny Tiramani clearly conducted her historical research in order to realistically portray the exquisite lifestyles of the French aristocracy of the 18th century on stage.
In order to reinforce the opera's realistic atmosphere all the costumes are based on actual history. Although the stage is always full of actors during the first three acts, it was easy to differentiate between members of different classes at first look. Even the clothing for background dancers and children dancers have been designed with delicate details.

(ECNS) -- Beijing has released 10 songs to support the city's bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, with Hong Kong kung fu star Jackie Chan and young celebrities joining in the chorus.
A theme song collection campaign, initiated by the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Bid Committee and the Beijing Olympic City Development Association (BODA), kicked off on August 8 last year and received many entries, including musical pieces by over 60 professional musicians.
From these, judges selected nine works and organizers recommend one piece called Wake Up Winter.
The songs cover different genres and have titles like Snow and Ice Dance, Return, Never Give Up, and Welcome to Great Wall Skiing. Jiang Xiaoyu, the deputy director of BODA, said music is one of the most important ways to promote the Olympics.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is investigating how one of its Airbus A330-300s temporarily lost power on the flight bound for Shanghai on May 23, the carrier said in a statement on Wednesday.
SIA said both engines experienced a temporary loss of power amid bad weather. The pilots followed operational procedures to restore normal operation of the engines, and finally the flight safely landed in Shanghai.
The incident occurred at 39,000 ft about three and a half hours after Flight SQ836 left Changi Airport on May 23. 182 passengers and 12 crew were on board. No immediate "anomalies" were found in the engines after the flight safely landed in Shanghai.
SIA has contacted the engine maker, Rolls-Royce, and Airbus to review the incident.
According to Channel NewsAsia's report, Rolls-Royce said it has cooperated with SIA by providing "support and technical assistance, " while Airbus said it was also engaged in finding the cause of power loss.

A desperate father who went viral online last year for becoming a "human punch bag" to raise money for his sick son failed to save the child, the Legal Evening News reported.
The three-year-old boy, who was suffering from leukemia, had only one month to live according to a hospital in Beijing.
Xia Jun's son was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2013. Last year, Xia took him to Beijing for treatment. To cover the high medical costs, he stood outside a subway station advertising himself as a "human punch bag," charging 10 yuan (US$1.6) for per punch.
He successfully raised 800,000 yuan (US$ 128,960) from the public.
Yet the boy's disease suddenly deteriorated earlier this year, and he stopped responding to any treatment after undergoing chemotherapy for a long period.
Xia decided to take his son back to their hometown in southwest China's Sichuan Province. "I should have spent more time with him," Xia said. After going home, he planned to take the boy anywhere he wanted to go and buy him all toys he desired.
"I can't return to society right now, but I won't forget the help people gave us," Xia said.

South Korea detains 11 illegal plastic surgery brokers
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-27/167056.shtml
May 27th 2015, 05:22
Eleven illegal brokers in South Korea's plastic surgery industry have been detained and more than 150 others have been banned from leaving the country on suspicion of engaging in unlawful practices, South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported on Tuesday.
The 11 brokers are mainly Chinese and South Korean-Chinese, said the police. They posted advertisements on the Internet claiming to help find best plastic surgery clinics in South Korea.
According to the police, the brokers are unregistered and they charged exorbitant fees and introduced the patients to unqualified doctors.
One of the suspects introduced 53 Chinese clients to plastic surgery hospitals in Gangnam district and Seodaemun district of Seoul from January 2013 to April 2015, earning 1.47 million yuan ($237,000) as commission. Investigation shows that some clinics paid the accused more than 90 percent of the surgery cost.
The profits made by the rest ranged from 392,000 yuan to 560,000 yuan.
Some charged extremely high commission from the patients. A Chinese woman paid 1.12 million yuan for a breast augmentation surgery whereas the original cost was 36,400 yuan.
The list of the 150 brokers who have been banned from leaving the country was found on account books of some plastic surgery clinics during police's investigations at Gangnam district, a high-profile neighborhood packed with luxury shops and a growing list of plastic surgeons. One of the suspects was captured when he tried to flee to China on May 21.
The involvement of illegal brokers would increase the cost for patients while lowering the medical quality, said the authorities.
In February, the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare announced a crackdown on illegal brokers and unregistered clinics, following a series of cases involving accidents with plastic surgery.
New measures require all medical practices that deal with foreign patients - and any brokers they use to attract the clients - to register with the ministry. Those who fail to do so are liable to a hefty fine and, in the worst case, a prison term of up to three years.
South Korea is famous for its plastic surgery, which has resulted in spectacular rise in the number of Chinese traveling to their neighboring country to seek better looks in recent years.
According to the latest figures from the Chinese Association of Plastics and Aesthetics, some 56,000 Chinese traveled there last year to go under the knife for cosmetic reasons a considerable rise on the 16,000 who traveled the year before, according to South Korean health ministry numbers.

Taiwan opposition DPP asked to clarify 'status quo' on mainland ties
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/05-27/167055.shtml

A Chinese mainland Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson on Wednesday asked the Taiwan opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to clarify its stance on cross-Strait ties while highlighting the "one China" principle.
Commenting on recent calls by the DPP to maintain the "status quo" with the Chinese mainland, State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Fan Liqing told a press conference that the DPP should clarify its definition of the term.
"The Taiwan public wants to know exactly what the DPP means when it uses the term 'status quo'. That's a question it must answer loud and clear," she said.
The spokesperson said that although the Chinese mainland and Taiwan had been separate since 1949, the fact that the two sides belong to one China has not changed. She underscored that the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity must not be compromised.
Cross-Strait ties have witnessed peaceful development since 2008 on the basis of the 1992 consensus, the core of which is the acknowledgment that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China, she continued.
"That is the real status quo of cross-Strait ties," Fan said.

Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao met with former Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.
Li said China and Afghanistan are friendly neighbors that understand, trust and support each other.
As this year marks the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, Li said China stands ready to work together with Afghanistan to further boost cooperation on trade, investment and security to benefit the people of the two countries.
China will continue supporting the process of reconstruction and reconciliation in Afghanistan, and helping to achieve peace, stability and development in the country at an early date, Li added.
Hailing the traditional friendship between the two nations, Karzai thanked the Chinese side for the contribution to Afghanistan's process of peace and development, and looked forward to continued assistance from China.

An instructor and his student died in a Navy aircraft accident on May 13 in northeast China's Liaoning Province, the Navy said Tuesday.
The Navy released the news on its microblog, saying that the two pilots were killed after failing to engage their parachutes after they had successfully avoided crashing in a densely populated area.
After discovering that the aircraft's engine was on fire shortly after taking off, the two pilots turned the aircraft away from villages, residential buildings, hospitals and a business area and dived into woods.
It was only 17 seconds between observing the fire and the crash.
There was not enough time or sufficient height for the two pilots to parachute from the aircraft, according to the Chinese Navy.
The instructor was Jiang Tao, 27, and the student was Lu Pengfei, 22. They were both from the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy Flight School.
