Thai authorities are currently stepping up security measures in the capital and elsewhere following last week's caution from Russia on possible terrorist attacks by IS-associated Syrian nationals who have already entered Thailand, police said on Friday.

Russia's Federal Security Service counter-intelligence unit sent a note to Thai authorities to warn of possible IS-related attacks on Russian and Western interests in Thailand following last October's entry into this country of 10 Syrian nationals, said deputy National Police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Sonpol Wattanachai.

The 10 unidentified Syrians, whom the Russian secuity units said to be connected with IS terrorist group, were said to have split to varied spots, including four in Pattaya, two in Phuket and two in the capital while the whereabouts of the other two were not reported, according to the deputy police spokesman.

He did not either confirm or deny possibility that the Syrians, said to have been given tourist visa to visit the Southeast Asian country, might already have departed.

The Immigration and Special Branch police are currently taking steps to track down on the suspected Syrians at the time of year which is usually viewed as high season for tourism and festivities.
