A spectacular exhibition of antique Chinese carpets is underway, showcasing ethnic, Art Deco and other designs in wool and silk.
Some of the carpets are on loan from an American collector and the show will run through January 19.
Carpet weaving emerged in China in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) in what is now the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Carpets were later introduced to the Middle
East and Europe.
The art of carpet weaving flourished during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The high-quality wool and silk, splendid patterns, natural dyes and
delicate techniques made the carpets famous and coveted around the world.
Some are in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and other major museums.
