Local authorities at the prefecture level reject the results of the Shangri-La County government's preliminary investigation that determined an electrical default caused the fire on Saturday that swept through the Dukezong Ancient Town of Shangri-la in southwest China's Yunnan Province, state-media agency, Xinhua, reports.

Qi Xiaodong, deputy director at the public security bureau of Diqing Prefecture in Yunnan Province said at a press conference that the cause of the fire released by the county government is not acceptable. He added that a further investigation of the fire is now underway.

The Dukezong Ancient Town lost 343 houses -- two thirds of the entire town -- after a fire broke out at the nearby Ruyi Inn on Saturday.

The Beijing Times reported that a local resident identified by the surname He said all five fire hydrants found near the Ruyi Inn were empty because the water supply was shut off.

Jin Yongsheng, general manager at the Water Supply and Discharge Company of Shangri-La, said the town has a modified fire extinguishing system, but all of them were covered by sewer lids to prevent the pipes from being damaged by frozen water in the winter.
