Poll shows children＊s drinking habits

About 63 percent of Shanghai's middle and high school pupils do not consume alcohol on a regular basis, a survey said Friday.
The claim was made in a poll of more than 30,000 young people from 267 schools in six cities across China.
The two-year study was conducted by the National Institute for Nutrition and Health, an agency under the disease control and prevention center.
It found that in Shanghai, just 37 percent of pupils had consumed alcohol in the year prior to being asked the question, while just 18 percent had "had a drink" in the previous 30 days.
The study did not provide a breakdown of the data by age, but most middle and high school students in China are aged between 12 and 18. Assuming an even distribution across that range, the number of 18-year-olds polled would be 14 percent. The legal age for drinking alcohol in China is 18.
In the survey, 51 percent of those polled in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Jinan, Chengdu and Harbin claimed to have consumed alcohol at some point in the previous 12 months, while 15 percent said they had been "intoxicated" in the period.
About 25 percent of the young people questioned nationwide claimed that they had their first taste of alcohol before the age of 10.
According to a report published last year by the World Health Organization, the incidence of drinking alcohol among young people in China is higher than in some Southeast Asia countries.
